Hi TMians,
Yesterday i got my final TOEFL scores. Its 290 with 6.0 in essay. I must really thank you for subtle hints for preparation. The Listening, Structure and Reading section were tricky but ok. The scores were 30, 28, 29 respectively. The essay topic was "If you are given a choice between watching an event [sports, musical event ...] at home on TV and live, what would you choose and why ?"
Besides I have collected a set of tips per section. I am not sure they will be helpful per individual basis or not, but I do hope it helps.
Listening
--------
* "What does the woman mean ?" remember TOEFL tapes, yeah what I did was to enact the sentences like these when I did real conversations [but in my mind], I helps to remain in the mindset of test. So if your friend says "heys lets go to party" remember asking "What does the friend suggesting me do ?"
* Practice
* Watching english movies and paying special attention to conversations and enacting the sentences as before in your mind, watch the movies not for fun but for learning, so rewind, stop, pause as you wish
* Try repeating steps with fresh mind
Structure
---------
* Check your school grammar book for tricky adverb based sentences, articles etc.
* "Feel the sentence" --> put various options and see what "sounds" better if in doubt.
* Practice
Reading
-------
* Do a directed reading --> direct your reading in huge passages as follows
> top 5 lines
> bottom 5 lines
> read based on question
* Be "masochistic" by enjoying dull and boring essays.
* Practice
Essay
-----
* Newspapers, Magazines [all kinds], Novels [Fiction, Non-Fiction] ...
* Atleast write 10 essays before exam to see the flow of your thoughts
* Be experimentative, with heading and ending
* Practice
--- Thank you again for your subtle hints.
