  1. Hello All, My undergraduate university in India had a percentage system, where I got 64%, which is considered very good in my department, as the top position holder had close to 69%, and I was 3rd in the class. I did my M.S studies in the US, with several PhD level courses and have a GPA of 3.5/4.0 And my GMAT is 730, with 51 in quant. I was filling out some applications and most of the schools ask for GPA the the form: "X" out of "Y". Now, what should I write over there. If I do simple conversion of 64/100 to U.S GPA, it comes out lower than 3, which would be wrong, as it depicts a wrong image. Moreover, nowhere on the school appllication, I could find any question asking for Class Rank or Top position holder's percentage etc. My undergraduate school recently mailed my transcripts to the universities, but they just attached a cover letter saying that our university has a percentage system ...and that's it. They didn't mention the class rank and top postion holder's percentage (I guess, because our university did not officially used to rank students). Any suggestions about what should I do and what should I fill in the two X and Y boxed for GPA: "X" out of "Y". Thanks Amit
  2. I know there is very less probability, but still I don't want any part of my application to not have any solid proof behind it. Anyways, I was able to track the activities coordinator for Red Cross during my time, so I am cool now. The reason, I am not working with Red Cross India anymore is because I left India to come to US for my higher studies and job. I am still involved in community services of equal magnitude and similar scope. I did not continue with Red Cross in "India", because I could not. Thanks
  3. Hello, I have a question regarding the community services. During my undergraduate studies, I have participated extensively in social service activities as a volunteer for Indian Red Cross. Now after 5 years when I am applying to business schools, I need to provide some sort of contact name and telephone number for someone at Indian Red Cross who can verify my voluntary work(if the school chooses to do background check). The social services activities coordinator who I used to deal with during my time, has left the office and everyone else over there would have no idea who I am. Can anyone suggest me what should I do. I highly doubt it that Indian Red Cross has some sort of database about past volunteer information. Should I not mention any of my activities(In that case it is bad for my application as I have good activities background), or should I mention it and just give the red cross office phone number and see what happens. I am not sure what is the procedure about mentioning the activities like these which cannot be proved. Thanks Amit
  4. Hey guys, I was wondering if you guys could tell me which are the popular forums, where people discuss the application process, essays, recommendations etc. Thanks
  5. Hey Guys, I am applying to Kellogs, Haas, NYU, Columbia, Tuck, Michigan. I was wondering if there are other people over here shooting for the same schools. Actually, I was wondering if there are people who want to share informations and difficulties faced in the application process. I am just starting to write the essays. Do you guys think I am way behind schedule? I would like to know how much tme people generally spend writing these essays? What's the application status of you guys? Amit
  6. Hello, I took the GMAT last saturday and got 730. This was my second attempt (first attempt, June 4, 2005, when I got 630, AWA-6). I have a Bachelor's(from India(non-IIT) -GPA ~3.5) and Master's(from Univ. of Maryland, CP, GPA-3.5) degree in Aerospace Engineering. I have been in some professional and cultural societies during school. I worked on a small business project(with the help of my father though) when I was in undergrad. Currently, I have 2 years of work experience as a Mechanical Engineer (I use the fundamentals learnt from my studies, in this job). I have recently got into Project Management and have received a couple of bonuses and awards from the company. Along with this, I am about to become a partner in my brother-in-law's company that deals with real estate construction materials (Small company. Planning to join for the import/export reasons, to sell products in the US). I am planning to apply to Kellogs, Tuck, Columbia, Chicago, Stern and Haas. What are my chances of securing an admission at these schools? I have just started the application process and many people have told me that Indian students should apply in the first round(early October deadline) for better chances. Is this is a stretch, preparing application in 2-2.5 months or is this normal? Also, please provide a brief plan of action that I should follow from here on to finish the application process by October beginning. Thanks in advance Amit
  7. Thanks, this book looks good. Is this book supposed to be the best there is for MBA admissions?
  8. Hello Guys, I took the GMAT last weekend and got 730. I want to start the application process now, but am completely clueless as to, where to start and what to do. Can anyone provide me with a brief outline of various steps that need to be taken to finish the application process. I am planning to apply to Kellog, Haas, Stern, Chicago, Dartmouth and Columbia. Thanks
  9. Hello Guys, I just finsihed my GMAT (got 730). I am planning to start my MBA schools application process and was wondering if someoone can tell me the different steps that one needs to go thorugh to complete the whole application process. I mean what all is required and everything. I am planning to apply to 5 of the top 10 business schools (have not finalized the list yet). I guess everyone will benfit from these posts if people start responding. Thanks Amit
  10. Hey kindergardernkid!!! no..I used the Princeton 2005. I think Princeton 2005 is not a good book for a student aiming for a score above 700. I am not sure about 2006 one.
  11. Hey Guys, First of all, thanks a lot to everyone at TestMagic for the wonderful and helpful posts. The first time I took the GMAT, was on June 4th, and I got a low 630(47Q, 30V, 6 AWA). This was probably because I did not really study properly and moreover, during the last week before the test, I had to spend 12-15 hours at work everyday(including the weekend) because of an important work project and therefore did not get much time to study. I took the test again yesterday and got a decent 730(51Q, 37V). I know the verbal acore is still not good enough for the top ten schools but I am not going to retake this test. I think that the best way to study for GMAT is to take 1-2 weeks off from work and focus completely on GMAT. I believe plenty of people over here have done that and have got high scores. But for people like me, who can't afford to take days off from work, I believe it's important to take the test on saturday afternoon, so that atleast the night before the test, you get a good night's sleep. Because I took the test in the afternoon, I was also able to devote 4-5 hours on Friday evening for revision of important concepts, that I think is important, just to get everything together. Now, my practice test scores: GMAT take 1: PowerPrep-1 = 710 (before studying anything) Princeton-1 = 710 Princeton-2 = 730 Kaplan-1 = 630 Kaplan-2 = 620 Kaplan-3 = 640 Kaplan-4 = 620 Princeton-3 = 690 Princeton-4 = 670 PowerPrep-2 = 770(I knew all the questions, as I had finished OG). Actual GMAT : 630 GMAT take 2: GMAT Paper tests: 790-800 GMATPrep 1: 740 GMATPrep 2: 760 Actual GMAT: 730(51Q, 37V) I am a little dissapointed with my verbal score as in all the practice tests, I was getting much better verbal scores than this and I believe that I can do better than this on verbal. The thing that killed me on Actual GMAT test is the RC. I got 4 RC's. The RC's were much tougher than the one's in OG and the way the questions were formulated out of them made me scratch my head. Moreover, I got 3 RC's before I even reached question 20. All this made me panic and I could not understand even the easy verbal questions. Quant was comparable to the difficult part of OG. One thing, I want to stress here is that people in this forum need to stop paying that much attention to probability, permutation and combination. The probability, permutation and combination questions that I got (2 of them), were very easy as compared to the questions discussed on this forum. The most difficult questions were the Data Sufficiency questions on absolute values and inequalities and there were a lot of them. So, I would suggest people to focus on them rather than waste soo much time on topics that won't be tested, unless you got nothing better to do than waste time on useless things. Well, that's all from my side. Thanks again to all of you guys. Amit

Hey Guys, I took a GMATPrep exam yesterday. The questions in quant were pretty tough. Verbal was not tough but good because all the RC passages were not from OG 10. I have two quant questions that I am unclear about. Please post your answers and explanations. 1) If $10,000 is invested at x percent simple annual interest for n years, which of the following represents the total amount of interest, in dollars, that will be earned by this investment in the n years? 1) 10,000(x^n) 2) 10,000(x/100)^n 3) 10,000n(x/100) 4) 10,000(1+x/100)^n 5) 10,000(1+x/100) 2) On the number line, the distance between x and y is greater than the distance between x and z. Does z lie between x and y on the number line? 1) xyz 2) xy Thanks

  18. R the questions in GMAT Prep, from OG?
  19. Arjmen is correct. if we look at this problem in your way 4% of 150 is 6 so we have 144-water and 6-salt if we take 50L water out then 144-50 = 94 and 6/[94 + 6] = 6/100 = 6% (It's a percent of salt from a mixture of salt and water) I am confused... a 4% solution of salt would be 6 L SALT/150 L of Salt and Water Combined.. The actual amount of water in the solution is 144 liters...the rest of the solution (6 L) iis salt If one took 50 liters of water away, one would actually have a salt concentration of higher than 6%. It would be 6/96 % Maybe I am just really tired tonight.
  20. Can anyone list the useful verbal tests or study aids available on this site or any other site. I heard that there are some sentence correction tests etc..available on this site. I am supposed to retake my GMAT in a month or so. I prepared from Kaplan, Princeton and OG last time. This time, along with OG, I will do the Kaplan 800 book + any resources available on net that might be helpful. Thanks
  21. In my verbal section, it seemed like I was not completely sure about any question. It definately seemed tough to me as compared to practice tests. I am not sure if the section was tough or I just overdid myself in the last 3-4 weeks of preparation. In the quant section, I generally used to get 50-51, but on GMAT i got 47, even though I thought I answered all the questions correctly. I am taking a 2-3 weeks off and will get back into studies and most probably take the test again in july end. I don't have a study plan right now, but I need to work on elimination methodology. I seem to have problems on getting to the right answer by eliminating the wrong answers. I hope poeple will keep posting suggestions. I definately need a verbal guide to understand grammer in a much better way. Right now, I need a break to get over this bad score and I need to know if the top 10 schools can disqualify me because of this poor score, even if I get a good score next time.
  22. I hope the schools take the most recent score, otherwise this low score would be the end of business school dream for me. What is your study plan for the GMAT retake?. I am sure you have already finished all the books also. What is the best resource (online and book) to strengthen the Verbal.
