  1. 800needed's approach looks good, except that .68 is not bigger than .75...?
  2. Thanks Kinder ... Okay, but how did you know to pick 4/4? I orignally picked 4/12 which leads to a resulting fraction of 3/15 - 4/12-3/15 = 1/3-1/5 = 2/15 = 13.33% ?? Is there a different approach that might work?
  3. If the numerator of a fraction is decreased 25% and the denominator of that fraction is increased 25%, then the difference between the resulting and the original fractions represents what percentage decrease? a 40% b 45% c 50% d 60% e 75% ??? clueless on this one.
  4. A racetrack bound by two concentric circles, one with a diameter of 160 yards and the other with a diameter of 140 yards, is to be covered with asphalt. If the asphalt layer is to be one foot deep, how many cubic yards of asphalt will be needed? a 75 b 90 c 500 d 1500 e 2000 Okay, so area of big circle - area of small circle would be area of track, right? But now how do I get to cubic yards???
  5. Thank you for setting this up / explaining. Ya'll have clearly explained why answer (b) is the most correct .... I think the answers in this question show improper use of parenthesis.
  6. How far does a rolling wheel w/ a 4 inch radius travel in 8 revolutions? a (8)(pi) feet b (5)(1/3)(pi) feet c (12)(pi) feet d (4)(pi) feet e (10)(1/3)(pi) feet How do you set up this equation?
  7. For a certain concert, 560 tickets were sold for a total of $2,150. If an orchestra seat sold for twice the balcony seat price of $2.50, how many of the tickets sold were balcony seats? (a) 235 (b) 260 © 300 (d) 325 © 358 Would someone please explain how to set up the equations for this one?
  8. Hi All. I drew a picture of a bell curve over a number line to figure this one. I came up with the correct answer: 84%. My question: how do ya'll feel about this technique. I mean, yeah, it worked here but should I be memorizing a bunch of formulas?
  9. Once they had seen the report from the medical examiner, the investigators did not doubt whether the body recovered from the river was the man w ho had attempted to escape from the state prison. (A) ‍did not doubt whether the body recovered from the river was (B) have no doubt whether the body recovered ‍from the river was © had not doubted that the body recovered from ‍the river was (D) have no doubt whether the body recovered ‍from the river was that of (E) had no doubt that the body recovered from the ‍river was that ofLooking at the action verb of the subject in the first part of the sentence, you see that the construction is "had seen." So to keep in the same action, you should pick the verb beginning with "had ...". That gives you C & E. I can't explain why "had not doubted" in C doesn't work, other than it sounds dumb, so the logical answer is E. But in looking at the rest of the completion...you also note that the man in the river is dead. Therefor, his body can't be him, as in ."..the body recovered... was the man" contradicts the action of death. After death, the body was that of a living person. The second part of E continues to work.
  10. This problem is so straight forward that it's easy just to pick a whole number and work for there. I say the hotel has 1000 rooms. 1000 x 3/4 = 750 rooms rented 1000-750=250 rooms not rented 1000 x 3/5 = 600 AC rooms in hotel 600 x 2/3 = 400 AC rooms rented 600 - 400 = 200 AC rooms not rented 200 / 250 = .8 x 100 = 80% of rooms not rented w/ AC answer E.
  11. Hi. I'm not from India. You might have guessed. I'm actually just from the kitchen w/ a baloney sandwich and some cheetos. But I went to India once. It's....busy! I got a sari, a henna tattoo and e. coli. Lost some weight, got a tan. It was cool. ...where were we, oh yes, GMAT. Sounds great. Think I'll do it this time (start #4 - only start unrelated to a new year's resolution--good; 2nd start related to a recent break up--hmm.) I intend to do quite well. 690-700 range. I have a load of studying to do ... is starting w/ multiplication tables a bad sign?? I think my current strengths are (in alphabetical order): ability to suppress the urge to urinate for 80+ minutes, lucky guessing, teeny writing on scratch paper, alphabetizing. Nov. 5 is the big day. There, I said it. I'm in. Now I just have to go find a ratty t-shirt and some jeans so the local univ. library hawks won't guess I'm not a registered student. Something about the pinstripe suit and pumps always gets the weird looks ... Wish me luck!
