"Recently we signed a contract with the Fly-Away Pset-Control Company to provide pest-control services at our fast-food warehouse in Palm City, but last month we discovered that over $20,000 worth food there had been destroyed by pest damage. Meanwhile, the Buzzoff Pest-Control Company, which we have used for many years, continued to service our warehouse in Wintervale, and last month only $10,000 worth of the food stored there had been destroyed by pest damage. Even though the price charged by Fly-Away is considerably lower, our best means of saving money is to return to Buzzoff company for all our pest-control services."
This argument describes a hackneyed problem in the food related industry. The evidences described here of the food that is damaged because of pests and the amount that is going into preventing it and in the losses, seems pretty supportive. But, on looking closely, we can see that these struts donot support as much as we expect them to.
This problem is generally described on the relentless pests. But it is not described, what type of pests are really causing problems. Pest are of two or more types. A) One which damage good food B) One which attack after the food is damaged. It is, in a general case, the latter. For example, pests like Cockroaches which damage good food and pests like Flies which attack degraded food. Describing such an entity would give us more insight into what exactly is to be done to prevent the happenings.
One of the most stumped premise is that both the Palm City warehouse and Wintervale warehouse house the content related to food. Because, its been said that one is a fast-food warehouse (Palm City), but nothing is being said about what is being stored in the Wintervale warehouse. It can be stationary, cutlery, kitchen equipment or any food that is processed and sealed. Its is very neccessary to examine two entities which are correlative. In this case, they are abstract.
When it comes to numbers, the losses incured in the Palm City warehouse is clearly more than those incured at Wintervale warehouse. But its not been said as to what percentage of food is being affected by the pests. It could also be true that the Palm City warehouse stores more food material than that of its counterpart in Wintervale. It can also be true that the number of pests surrounding Wintervale are less than those surrounding Palm City. The ambience and environment are to be taken into account. It can also be true that Palm City could be warmer and hence more accomodating to pests.
The management plays as important role as that of the pest-control company. The pest-control solutions are not a one time investments, the management has to take good care to sustain the work done by the pest-control company. The management should ensure good ventillation of air, light and temperature inorder to sustain the freshness of the food items stored. We know that when one of these elements is not ventillated, the probability of pests grows exponentially. It has not been considered as to what precautions or what arrangements the management has done to support the work that the pest-control people did.
It all comes down to one important thing, the Hygiene. Hygiene doesnt only correspond to human body or the homes we live in, it plays a vital role in every field. By keeping a place hygenic, the pest problem will be derogated. The hygiene of both the warehouses should be taken into account before taking any decision. Here, its not mentioned of any 'hygiene' taken by the management. Thus, even in this case, the management is as responsible as the pest-control company.
Hence, by examining the aforementioned examples, we can conclude that any decision taken taken on the basis of the statements expressed in the argument will not yield the benefits that are expected of it. The other factors are to be taken into account that may prove vital. This might also cost the management much less and help them to arrive at a simpler solution.
The argument could be made cogent by giving the statistic details of what percentage of food is being damanged and what kind of pest problems they are faced with, in the warehouses.
