Linz
PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Unknown LAC school Undergrad GPA: 3.77 Type of Grad: N/a Grad GPA: GRE: Q 167 V n/a AWA 5.5 Math Courses: Calc II/III, Linear Algebra, Intro to proofs, Real Analysis I/II, Abstract I, Probability and Mathematical Stats I/II, Differential Equations (all As and A-s, except a B+ in Real I). Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Intro Micro (Hons), Intro Macro, Intermediate Micro/Macro, Econometrics I/II (both As), Trade, Development, Capstone, Senior Seminar, Math Econ (All As and A-s) Other Courses: 1 programming course Letters of Recommendation: 1 Trade professor from a T10 (not active researcher), 1 Econometrics professor from T30 and still active in research, 1 Math advisor I've known since freshman year. I'm very close with these people who have helped me through the process and I did pretty well in their classes, so I want to believe the letters should be somewhat personal. Research Experience: RA in Math modelling for 1 year but probably irrelevant. I also did a couple of empirical papers for undergraduate classes. Teaching Experience: 2 years of tutoring Research Interests: Mostly trade and development. Possibly health and labor. SOP: Relatively standard. I wrote my SOP 2 weeks before the deadline so I obviously didn't have time to revise it a lot (in fact, nobody else but me read my SOP). I mentioned why Economics, why a PhD, research experience (which is just a bunch of empirical econometrics paper in Trade/Development) and how writing these papers helped me gain exposure to research and choose my intended fields. A paragraph in the end for each school I applied. I didn't mention names, just mention their fields offered and my interests. Concerns: Undergrad is not known, lack of research experience because I didn't write a thesis since it's not an option (a school I interviewed with actually pointed out this weakness to me when talking about my research experience, but they thought my other papers for my econometrics classes made up for that). Other: My school doesn't have much experience in sending kids to PhD programs so I didn't know what my realistic range was. Applying to: Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, GWU, Pitt, UCSC, Rice, BC, UIUC, UVa, Brandeis, Houston, UIC, Emory
