dikpal
Hi All, Please help me in deciding the university My research interests are in Information Theory and its applications in Wireless Communications and Networks. Also interested in Coding Theory I applied to the following universities Admitted University of Maryland College Park University of Minnesota Twin Cities NO aid from both of these Reject University of Texas at Austin Rice Uinversity Purdue University Awaiting University of Southern California University of California Santa Barbara (Most probably a ding) Which among UMD and UMN is good, according to you, in my field of interest? Also, at which university is there a higher chance of obtaining financial aid? How would you rate both of them in terms of 1.Overall environment and work culture 2.Job opportunities/ Contacts with industry 3.Reputation in the industry 4.Reputation in academia Thanks Dikpal
bigredx24x
UMD wins in all respects. I was just out there a few weekends ago and they really impressed me with their Wireless Comm. and Networking research.
gforce
Yup. I second bigredx. UMCP trumps UMN-TC by a big margin.
EEGradStudent1
I agree....UMD is the better choice.
dikpal
Hi, Thanks a lot bigred, gforce and eegradstudent1 for the suggestion. Since I dont have funding from either institute which place do you think is better at funding after one reaches there. UMN has not set any deadline for my acceptance of offer but UMD has set the April 15 deadline, which is tomorrow. Generally, isn't the April 15 deadline for only those applicants who have been given the financial aid? Thanks Dikpal
Brown
Hi, dikpal Are you sure UMD's deadline is the 15th of April? There wasn't anything written in the official letter they sent me (by email). In the graduate admission website, it says admissions are withdrawn if you don't obtain financial support of present proof of sufficient personal funds by the end of may. But I haven't seen anything about April 15th. What's the hurry, when they're not giving aid ?

dikpal
Hi All, Thanks for the wishes markiv81....I am presently undecided about UMD or UMN. I guess I have to make a decision soon. Congrats and best of luck for your graduate studies.....I might join you at UMD. To Brown.......what you have written is true regarding the admissions being withdrawn in case we dont show proof of financial support. Actually I had emailed UMD regarding the last date since nowhere on the webpages is it written clearly about the last date and they mailed me back saying that it is April 15. I had also mentioned in my mail that I havent received any financial aid. I guess you guys can independently verify about the last date by mailing them and please post here the last date as mentioned by them. Thanks Bye Dikpal
Brown
Thanks Dikpal, If you hadn't posted that I would have probably left it untill the end of may. I have to chose between UMD and NCSU (both without aid). I've got another option; not take any of them and wait untill next year. and congrats to you and markiv81.
