  1. It's been ages since I last logged in out here. I was actually googling around for some info on HBS and happened to stumble upon this forum. My my, have things changed or what! Anyhow, it feels great to be back. I'll probably stick around for the next couple of months, thanks to my upcoming b-school apps this fall.
  2. Hi dpadalkar, Welcome to TestMagic! Since it is very difficult to give out a list of universities, it would be better if you could post a list of universities that you're considering and we'll predict your chances of getting in. Plus, the GRE and TOEFL scores do not play a significant role in determining whether one gets the admit or a bump. Your academic scores and research work (or potential) is what counts the most.
  3. Oh! I'm sorry for the confusion. I meant that you probably can't apply for a visa at this stage.
  4. Thanks a lot guys! I really appreciate that!
  5. Oh! It seems that the percentile ranking for the same score has gone down this year as compared to 2004. If I remember correctly, 830 equated to the 87th percentile in 2004. @bilash: Don't worry mate! Keep your chin up and hope for the best!
  6. Hi fmku, Yeah..I guess that excerpt is from Sid's article on higher education. Sid was a graduate student at UMich. Anyways, I wouldn't advise you to look too deeply into such things. It might be possible that UFL was going through a purple patch during that academic year but if I'm not mistaken, most students from the 2005 batch did manage to get some sort of financial support.
  7. Heartiest Congratulations!! NCSU is certainly a very good school though you might wanna wait for your top bets to take a decision on your application. I'm not too sure if you can actually apply for an I-20 at such an early stage.
  8. Hey bilash, Getting 850 is no big deal. Aim for the stars and you shall get what you had set out for. Oh and btw, this is a small piece of advice for all the prospective Fall '06 CS appers. There's absolutely no need to go ga-ga over your AGRE results. The AGRE is small part of your overall application and in most cases, doesn't have any significant impact on the probability of getting admitted to a particular school. Therefore, there's no need to be dissapointed if you ended up in the 600s and the 700s (which by the way, is a pretty good score). With that out of the way, good luck to everyone!
  9. Hi Aum, Admissions to grad. school does not solely depend on the GRE and TOEFL scores. Your academic/research and co-curricular records are a major factor in determining whether you get an admit or a bump. Please post your complete profile so that fellow members can evaluate your chances.
  10. @all Kindly post your questions and doubts related to the application procedure in the University Admissions Forum:Graduate. This would help everyone locate articles and threads quickly and keep the forum clean. Thank you for your co-operation. :) Good luck!
  11. I'm eagerly waiting for TMians to post their AGRE scores. Good luck to all the prospective appers! :)
  12. I guess Senor and whisky have said enough about this. I'd strongly recommend appearing for the AGRE (I'm assuming that you aren't applying for the Fall 2006 semester). Good luck! @whisky: Are you the same person from Edulix?
  13. Hey guys, Thanks for remembering me. I'm special. ;) Anyways, I've spent the past couple of days perusing through the posts and it seems that there are a lot more knowledgeable forum members as compared to last year. I'll keep chipping in with my advice as and when it is required. @knd7: Ranji is doing great. Infact, we've registered for the same class. Oh and btw, a warm welcome to adonis! ;)
  14. "Guess who's back Back Again..." No, it's not Eminem (ahem!) but gforce. Old timers would (hopefully) recognize my ID. To those who've joined in the last 6 months, I was an active member out here and am a grad. student at Georgia Tech. I'm pleasantly surprised at the level of activity these days and the massive changes that have taken place over the past couple of months (the PHP tracker tells me that I had last logged in on the 10th of July). Give me a couple of days to come back to speed and I'll resume my duty of disseminating information to the new batch of applicants. Just as a side thought, are Econ (and his gang of comrades) still around? What about the diva of philosophy (read scheng)? @Erin: I'm extremely sorry for completely deserting the forum. I should have devoted some time but grad. school has been one heck of a journey! :) - G
  15. What's your major? CS/EE or something else?
  16. What do you mean by "complicated"?? Care to explain? Please post your credentials.
  17. Check out CMU's Masters program in Computational Finance. It's pretty easy to get admitted to that program and is probably the best CF program out there.
  18. Awesome! A PhD-EE degree from Columbia is as good as it gets! Good luck!
  19. You could try Drexel which awards the University fellowship to most admitted students. However, it's annual tuition fee is on the higher side. Check it out before applying. I'm not too sure about the aid situation at Clemson University. UT-Dallas' funding situation is quite poor (check out the UTD ISA website for more information). On the other hand, UT-Arlington awards the university fellowship to many students but is a poor substitute for UTD. I wouldn't classify Syracuse as an ambitious bet...you gotta be more ambitious than that!! :) Your list isn't balanced...check out some other universities as well.
  20. @prasanna: Canadian universities are right up there with the best universities in the United States. The University of Toronto is considered as the M.I.T. of Canada. Other famous universities are Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia and the University of Alberta. @adityakowtha: Welcome to TestMagic! Your profile is certainly very good but I'm sure you realize that UT-Austin is a top notch university and attracts hundreds of top quality applicants. I'd suggest appearing for the CS AGRE to boost your chances since UTCS admission decisions are very unpredictable. Sometimes it won't admit anyone without a top notch AGRE score while this year it did admit quite a few students with negligible AGRE scores.
  21. If I'm not mistaken, the AGRE scores are valid for 5 years. It depends on the policy of the university you are applying to. Most would consider the most recent score. Good luck!
  22. AWESOME!! Columbia rocks big time! Btw, did you apply to the MS or PhD-EE program? Your post in the 2005 Profiles thread mentions that you've been admitted to the EE PhD program while according to this post, you will be attending the Masters program.
  23. MIT is a darned tough nut to crack for even the best of the best. UPenn as well as the other Ivy league schools like Columbia accept very few PhD-CS students since the majority of the class is composed of Masters students. But I'm really surprised about UCI and UCSB which aren't too selective. I know people with worse credentials getting admitted to these schools. But UCSB has been stingy in giving out admits this fall...it's probably due to a shortage in research funds. I think the very low Quant section score could have been a major reason for getting rejected. I'd suggest re-appearing for the GRE. Also try and appear for the CS AGRE. A top notch score would certainly boost your profile.
