Let side of cube be a

 

therefore total surface area = 6a^2

 

3 sides have 1/2 red face => area covered in red = 3/2*a^2

 

fractional area covered = 3/2*a^2 /6a^2 = 1/4

How do you know if the cube has only 2 colors?

The first statement says Red and the second says white.

The problem statement doesn't say that the cube is only red or only white or both.

Combine them together : U get 3 surfaces with 1/2 red each and other 3 surfaces with non-red color; it doesn't matter what color they are as long as theyr non-red.

 

So, now we can get the ans.

Ankur, could you please check the problem again if there is any typo error. With the present conditions ans should be C. If the stm2 says partially or 1/2 instead of entirey white then answer can vary.
