Response:

Proponents of modern education have touted the necessity to help children build their futures, apart from imparting skill and knowledge. However, a close examination of methods of education in various educational institutes reveal that the latter has been achieved, but the former is yet to be materialized. Thus educational institutions should strive diligently towards helping students to identify their successful fields.

Today’s educational systems have done a commendable job in opening up students to different fields like science, philosophy, literature, arts etc. But mostly, students choose what they perceive as better and a field that can assure them of a good job with a decent remuneration. Very few have sought their passion. In today’s world of computers, students pursuing studies in the IT field have increased exponentially from those a few years ago. These concentrations have arisen due to their promising factors, but are these fields sought by the students with genuine interest? The consequences being job dissatisfaction, unsuccessful careers, frustration and guilt. Finally are we not compromising on the productivity of the nation?

To avoid the consequences mentioned above, educational institutions have a very important role to play. Academic interests of a student of an institution may not be coherent with others. Whilst few have caliber in research, a few might be interested in teaching or engineering. Thus it becomes important to nurture students in those fields in which they could excel. Though it might sound like a colossal venture, these academic shades of differences would be more perspicacious through a small project, a group activity, a simple presentation by students or interacting with the students. Like the classroom session meant to enhance the knowledge of a student, an interactive session could probably dissuade a student from choosing the wrong field.

Educational institutions, especially the ones which were established a few hundred years ago can significantly help students in this regard. These educational institutes have witnessed numerous failures in their past. They could use the lessons learnt from their past to guide students to a brighter future. Institutes like the Harvard University in the US, the Oxford University in UK had been set up way back in the sixteen hundreds and twelve hundreds respectively have enough experience to help students. Moreover, education nowadays are very costly. If a physics major student opts for several courses in biology then not only will it cost him more, but he will also take a longer time to graduate. He could be able to reduce his length of study in college by making the appropriate choices of courses and also graduate within a lower budget.

If educational institutions are to encourage students to pursue studies in suitable fields, then the procedure for counselling the students should be flawless. If the system to understand the potential of a student is faulty, it would do more harm than good and could ruin the career of a student who otherwise might have been very successful. Some educational institutes could attempt to persuade students to take up certain fields which could help the institute financially. Therefore students should always take a second opinion before making the final decision.

While now it may be clear that educational institutions have a significant role in dissuading students from pursuing unsuitable fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed, it should also be apparent that the long term benefits would reward the efforts taken. Further, this simple step would help in the personal growth of the student and would be beneficial for the nation.

Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed.

Some people might say that students should not waste their time pursuing fields of study in which they cannot succeed, instead they should focus in a specific field of study in which they can succeed. However, the close examination of the issue reveals that teachers at schools and universities should not discourage student from learning. No one, even teachers at schools and universities cannot say that who is likely to succeed in which field and who is unlikely to succeed in which field, because success is a result of hardwork and traineeship. If they discourage students from doing the things they are interested in, it will lead students to lose their confidence and motivation.

There is a saying that a success is a combination of 1 per cent talent and 99 per cent hard work. No one, even teachers at schools and universities could tell that one student can succeed in that field. At school, a student might have been performed worse than their classmates. However, who knows if that children can succeed in real life pursuing the same field of study. There are a lot of successful stories that someone who were bad at maths at school became a good accountant. In contrast, someone who had an inherent talent at doing something failed in later life. If a child can sing very well, it does not mean he or she have to be a singer. If a child cannot speak clearly, it does not mean that he or she cannot become a lector.

Furthermore, educational institutions, such as schools and universities are a place where students can learn. They should not discriminate their students depending on their ability and skills. They should grant their students the same treatment and provide an equal opportunities to their students. If student wants to pursue a field of study in which he or she is not good at, there should be a chance for him or her to do that. Life is not just a success, it is a satisfaction. If people satisfy doing what they want without any remarkable achievement, that is a real success. If teachers discourage them to follow their interest, it will lead students to lose their confidence and motivation. At that time, teachers would not know that he or she killed the future president.

In conclusion, students should not be discouraged from learning due to their lack of ability and talent. Educational institutions should provide an equal opportunity to their students to pursue all the fields of study. Life is rich, anything could happen. Just let the students to learn.

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO DISSUADE STUDENTS FROM PRSUING FIELDS OF STUDY IN WHICH THEY ARE UNLIKELY TO SUCCEED

Today there’s a plethora of avenues open to students to take up and shine out. A student could be interested in engineering, medicine, sport, theatre, photography etc. but it is equally important for the student to realize his/her strengths and weaknesses and act accordingly. It is always easier to succeed when energy is channelized in the direction of your strengths and not the other way around. It thus becomes very important for the institutions to be able to tap into the strengths of individual students and motivate them in that direction so as to boost the student’s confidence as well as to carve them a niche of their own.

Sachin ramesh tendulkar is a great example of success exemplified. His cricketing coach noticed his dexterity with the bat at a very early age and encouraged and guided the boy who went on to become the greatest legend in the cricketing world. Sooner the talent is identified, sooner can the individual be guided into the right direction. Though it is difficult to pay such amount of attention to each student in big educational establishments, it is always possible to guide the students in helping them decide their future course of lives by identifying their weakness if not strength.

India is a country known for producing the maximum amount of computer engineers in the world. So what makes Indians such good software engineers? Or does it make them good engineers at all? The truth is that it does not. Our country is driven by the middle class and their aspirations to elevate their lives into a more comfortable one and in the process, so have the Indian educational institutions become. There is a decree to pursue engineering post the completion of one’s schooling as a guaranteed job post engineering would mean a comfortable and prosperous life. Where there is a need for the institutes to find out the student’s strength and promote them in that same field, which may or may not be favorable to academics, students are snubbed and told that it is only important to concentrate on basic education first, after which one can always find time and develop their skills which in reality only end up becoming vocational skills.

Though it is absolutely wrong for any institution to tell a student what to pursue and what not to pursue, it should be their prerogative to guide the student in a way that they do not end up in fields that they would miserably fail at because of their naivety in taking a decision. That’s where an institution should play a crucial role.
