047 Society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect

This is a skeptical age, but although our faith in many of the things in which our forefathers fervently believed has weakened, our confidence in the superiority of intellect evaluation remains the same as theirs. Competence in reasoning and cognition is still regarded as a critical dimension of human being.

 

First and foremost, "What on earth does the concept intellect mean?" is the first question calling for satisfactory interpretation. Actually, intellect is, at least I uphold this view, general skills in cognition, that is the faculty to grasp the intrinsic characters of material without being confused by its external masks and at the same time, the sound usage of creative thinking like inducing and deducing.

 

Modern society has placed enough emphasis in these terms for the simple reason that intellect impulse is the engine and the root of human progress for centuries. As Dr Hopkins once presented,

"Intellect, the ability to think, reason, judge, analyze and synthesis, can never be emphasis more". This statement is nothing but undeniable. Higher education was introduced to bring up human being's intellect and we are now try our best to help everyone in our society share the knowledge accumulated by "few lucky ones" for this long history of development.

 

Meanwhile, when we put our main attention on promoting intellectual level all round, non-intellectual ability should by no means be deprived of our consideration. These competence mainly concerned with people's social responsibility and willingness on cooperation, also helps to push our community forward. Generally speaking, if the balance between intellectual and non-intellectual ability is lost, human will have to face up to an unfavorable future.

 

Taken into account all arguments that have been presented above, we are now probably apt to admit the conclusion, that is, modern society has settled and will still place enough emphasis on human intellect when candidates' working potential is measured. Yet non-intellectual factors deserve proper attention from us as well. All in all, the balance is required to be always kept for the sake of both human being and the development of society.

The speaker's claim is that society does not stress much emphasis on

intellect. eventhough the intellects will be repected by the public

they are less popular than others who excels in other fields like

sports,media,politics etc. I concede with the author that these

intellects does not receive as much attention or support from the

society as they deserve.

 

 

 

To start with , intellects are the ones who invented many things for

the man to lead a comfortable and luxurious life. Yet society does

not recognizes the effort these intellects have put ,the stress they

underwent in inventing or discovering these. But it uses these

inventions for its own uses. Today how many knows that telephone that

now becomes a necessary and compulsory device was invented by Graham

Bell? But they can answer the questions like who was the captain of

Australian cricket team,who was the famous England football player

who have joined the Real Madrid Club.

 

Secondly ,consider the example of Srinivas Ramanujan, India's great

mathematician. He came from a poor family which cannot afford his

educational expenses. Yet he showed extraordinary ability at the age

of 16 itself. He wrote all his observations ,his discoveries,and the

new formulas he derived in a small note book. Due to his proverty and

lack of support from the society except for few individuals he has

not done much research in his field. Today groups of mathematicians

are working to decipher what he has written in his notebook. If he

had received much support from the society he would have contributed

much more to the society.

 

Finally consider the case of scientists , who struggle through out

their lives to contribute new inventions to the society . today we

are living in the world where we can see our loved ones where ever

they present at the moment we want to see them, also we can talk to

them , and can see what ever is happening in the world . are not

these contributions of the intellects who have the reasoning and

other cognitive skills ?

 

But public pays much attention only on the celebrities and public

figures. For example consider the game of Chess. Playing this game

requires intelligence,reasoning and analyzing skills. But this was

not popular except in few countries . on the other hand games like

cricket and football which does not require reasoning and coginitive

skills are popular throughout the world.

 

In sum , the society should place much emphasis on the intellect and

should support ,encourage them for better results from them which

will be beneficial to the society.

The human race has entered a brave new world, 21st century being known as a time of advanced scientific and technological knowledge and the information, in its history. At the mercy of the ever-accelerated updating of science and technology, more problems of deficient emphasizing on cognitive skills in society brought to public attentions.

 

Cognition, the capability of being reduced to empirical factual knowledge, is significant to the progress of the human beings and the society, through which the humans acquire the prevailing era developing at an unprecedented rate. No the science or technology is not based on the cognition of humans to the nature. Thomas Edison, who started where the last man left off, would agrees on this point undoubtedly. He would be probably confused by the reason why the present people have no place enough to show the prominence of cognitions. All that indicates the point that our cognition of nature or social objects is at a stage in which the humans should drew more attention to the high-level intelligent dominators in the blue planet for advanced civilizations continually and promisingly.

The reason lies in that the society seems to demonstrate excessively solicitude for none-intellect entertainments and affairs: pop music, games, even the emotional affairs between lovers, and simultaneously, seems to express more opportunities for the not-intellects to display theirselves than what for the intellects. Consider the powerful public media: TV or broadcastings, it is obvious that the music channels are far more than the science channels.

 

Simply put, without cognitions, our society would find itself retrogressed in the Stone Age. People might reflect on how we figure in a book entitled ¡°The Modern Human Steps¡± , which is being written every day we delays without the progressing for the human emulating to cognize objective matters and to understand human itself. Fortunately, the intellect, the power of knowing as distinguished from the power to feel and to will, makes the modern people enjoy the every dimension of conformable lifetime.

 

However, no matter the society or the people do not take pulse of the cognitions and be ignorant of importance of it. Just as clothes can make the man, some modern people, who close eyes on the intellect, dress what they considered nice ones, in fact, which are only the unilateral willingness-the new cloth of the emperor, one of children¡¯s stories of Hans Christian Andersen¡®s ¨Cdressing nothing because of the modern people leaves cognitions in the fitting room. Perceptibly, those, with almost nothing no body, would experience embarrassments.

 

In fact, the modern society does not have no place enough to emphasize on the cognitive skills. In the every angle of the human lives, people in society unavoidably contact with sorts of the matters every day, in which people needs the skills of cognition to facilitate the perception. To some degree, similarly, handing one new matter though the learning that is the process is the development of cognizing. Justified each feature as necessary, all the aspects of the whole society offer the enough places to weight the intellect.

 

Not only, of course, the intellect and other cognition skills are significant to the society, but also the no-intellectual capability including will, interest, motivation, aspiration, intuition and faith should also be the essential part to the individual and the society. Suppose to lose these competence, the people would absent oneself from the social intercourses and the society would be got bogged down into the endless disorder deeply.

 

Without emphasizing the cognitions, society becomes moving sluggishly and eventually inefficient. Meanwhile, no-intellectual abilities are irreplaceable to individual and society. As a result, while our form of society necessitates the cognitions, non-intellects are equally important with drawing more attentions of the society.

Is the society the one that does not emphasis enough the intellect? I am inclined to believe that people are fully aware of the benefits which cognitive skills can bring them, but they are disturbed by mass media. Moreover, the legislators try to convince people to study more.

Fist of all, human beings are generally concerned with technological progress, which make their life easier and more comfortable, and with the reconstruction of the past events, which help them to see the progresses. Everybody knows that you need strong cognitive skills to contrive different devices or concepts. Through history we can notice the importance of these skills. People like Eistein, Pitagora or G. Bell had emphasized their intellect and they let us valuable things such as telephone or formulas.

Secondly, the governments enact more and more laws about the educational system. In many countries people are required to finish a high-school or at least 10 grades. The children are stimulated to learn from kinder garden where they are recompensed for their actions. The fact that the school is compulsory shows us that the legislator emphasizes the intellect. Also, in the society the employers choose their employees on the cognitive`s criterion, so people are in some way force to learn more. I think that our society pay more attention on intellect than ever before.

However, personally I believe that mass media is the one which does not promote the intellect. They highlight the sports, politics or VIPs life. For example, if we turn on the TV on a sport channel we can watch football, soccer, basketball and there we will not find sports which involve cognitive skills such as chess game. It is the same thing with the VIPs life. Mass media inform us about unimportant details of VIPs life, instead of promoting intelligent people who have a contribution for the society progress. The governments do not any influence in restricting these subjects, because we live in a democratic society. Anyway, people have the possibility to choose what kind the information they want to acquire.

All things considerate, people became aware of the importance of the cognitive skills, but these are acquired differently. The governments try to do the best in promoting the necessity of going at school, because they know that a nation can develop only if its people are intelligent.
