limeade
What are the best practices when asking a professor at another institution to potentially become one of your dissertation advisors? What are the norms when it comes to working with a professor at another institution? Are there limits on what they can or should have to do? Thanks! startz
Your university probably has some rules; for example, an outside person may not be allowed to be chair. It would probably be a good idea to (1) Establish a relationship with the person before asking them to join your committee; (2) Ask your committee chair as a courtesy before the outside person.
