  1. I'm calling myself a slacker bcos I gave gmat in Nov 2007 and never posted the debrief. But it's better to be late than never. Thanks to Erin for this wonderful forum and thanks to 800Bob, arjmen, gmat-help, aashu_79, tictaktoe, twinsplitter, CTG1983, Clintonn, manish8109, gschmilinsky and many others. 800Bob impressed me most as his words are like facts. And don't just think him a SC guru, he is a gmat guru as he has a perfect score. I used to think myself a math stud till I came across people like arjmen, gmat-help, aashu_79, lsr, thankont etc. and realised there are many better people around. I don't know if my debief will still have any value since lot of time has passed but anyway posting it. How to improve and hence contribute towards TM. a. Post the Question subjects in the following format or sth similar: Source - Concept - Keyword (Some description) e.g., GMATPrep - Percentages - Jim earns 120 % Kaplan800 - Parallelism - As per the survey in 1980,.. This will help users who are in the beginning of their preparation and unknowingly do GMATPrep/OG problems and thereby the tests get spoiled if the questions are repeated. Also users who are done with their GP and OG, may want to look only for official questions. And will help in searching. b. In a person's debrief, please avoid posting some problems, start a new thread. We don't want any good problems to be lost within debriefs. Also it will keep the debriefs smaller and hence more easier to read. We want the gem debriefs of ticktacktoe, CTG, twin, ursula , mine (kidding) to be preserved and reused. c. Please make the best use of the subforums, e.g., a SC question must land in the SC forum and no where else. We need to help Erin in his job so that he can reply to more posts rather than clean the things. d. Please just don't say only ans is A or B...Or IMO. Its better to keep quiet than just say A, B w/o explanation. e. Please make use of the search functionality before posting a question. You can revive an existing thread if you don't agree with the explanation but please don't start a new thread for the same question. Material used: Forums Kaplan Kaplan 800 Kaplan Verbal workbook Kaplan workshops Princeton Princeton Verbal Baaron's GMAT - SC section is good Manhattan - all guides Powerscore CR bible OG10 OG11 OG Verbal Tests Kaplan Princeton 800GMAT PowerPrep GMATPrep Sets Manhattan Forums/Internet testmagic scoretop Manhattan Challenge Problems - For quant athletes Notes: Sahil's Spidey's Sumit Thakur's GIN's strategy Mistakes I did: 1. Biggest - I didn't take a date. I could have given gmat in 2006 or early 2007 itself had I taken date and probably would have scored same or more. 2. Covered a lot of average material, and so had to skip some good material like sets, etc. Advice: 1. I feel that 4 months could be considered a maximum time frame in which most people can prepare for the gmat assuming that one is able to spend around 20 hours a week. 2. What to study. I feel this is very important. From my experience I can tell you that even a sub-standard material will have something to offer. But the problem is time. If one has a lot of time then go through most of the things but for most of the folks, it's always a time crunch. So I will recommend OG11, Gmat Prep, Manhattan SC (rest of the Manhattan guides are not that important), Powerscore CR Bible, OG Verbal (Not very good explanations), OG10 (Not as good as OG11), Powerprep, Kaplan workshops, one or two books among all Kaplan, Princeton books. For tests - do as many as you can, I won't say don't do Kaplan, Princeton, etc because I believe in practice. Had you had 20 different Gmat prep exams, I will advise you to do those rather than do Kaplan, 800GMAT etc but since there aren't a lot of tests, do as many as you can. If you want to test drive yourself in quant, must try Manhataan CATs. Again it is not that you have to do a Kaplan test at the cost of Gmat Prep test, not like that. It all depends on how much time you have. Close to the D-day, practice more and more from Gmat Prep. Do sets. 3. One should use a GMAT Prep test early in the preparation (may be after going through a Kapan or Princeton book) just to baseline oneself. You would probably get at least that much score if it is not a really bad day and if you stay cool. Unfortunatly in my case I got exactly the same score that I got in PowerPrep in Nov 2005 when I baselined myself, I didn't imporve :-( My initial good score could be bcos I have given entrance exam for Indian mba schools in the past, so wasn't exactly a novice. 4. Some folks have written wonderful debriefs, just to name a few, twinsplitter, ursula, larzke, tictaktoe, Clintonn, CTG1983, etc. Many of these have tons of information also. Glance through as many debriefs as you can. 5. There are tons of materials available on internet, don't be greedy like me and keep on grabbing everything. Background - Indian, IT, IIT, Married, Have a kid. GMAT score - 750 (50 Q, 40 V) AWA 6 Some data: PowerPrep 1 Nov 2005 Q 50 V 40 33/41 RC 13/14 SC 13/16 CR 7/11 Overall 750 GMATPrep 1 12-17-2006 Q 50 32/37 DS 15/18 PS 17/19 V 45 35/41 RC 14/14 SC 12/16 CR 9/11 Overall 770 GMATPrep 2 12-25-2006 Q 50 32/37 DS 15/18 PS 17/19 V 38 30/41 RC 12/14 SC 11/16 CR 7/11 Overall 740 PowerPrep 2 01/06/2007 Q 50 27/28 (evaluated) 36/37 V 42 25/30 (evaluated) 34/41 RC 12/14 SC 14/16 CR 8/11 Overall 760 GMATPrep 2 11-06-2007 Q 50 32/37 DS 15/19 PS 17/18 V 46 36/41 RC 14/14 SC 13/16 CR 9/11 Overall 770 GMATPrep 1 11-08-2007 Q 51 32/37 DS 14/18 PS 18/19 V 42 34/41 RC 11/14 SC 13/16 CR 10/11 Overall 760 GMATPrep 2 11-15-2007 Q 51 33/37 DS 16/18 PS 17/19 V 42 34/41 RC 10/14 SC 14/16 CR 10/11 Overall 760 I would re-emphasise the fact that one must take a date, pick the right material and go for it. I wasted a lot of time by delaying the test and studying variety of materials.
  2. Give the second GPrep and see the result, if you are happy continue with the original date else change. Also in case you decide to continue, focus on Official Guide 11th edition as much as possible.
  3. I think 620 is too low compared to the statistics you have mentioned, you must give it a second shot. Try the 1000 docs. Please provide some info on vip membership and questions.
  4. Olutayo, In your manner, Let's say A = event of getting 3 B = even of getting odd (1,3,5) A interection B = event of getting 3 P (A U B) = p(A) + P(B) - P(A intersection B) = 1/6 + 3/6 - 1/6 = 1/2 Hope this helps.
  5. I feel A, but this question won't be difficult then. I don't know if there is sth missing in the question.
  6. ackerman80, Congratulations, you indeed made a big jump. Could you focus on the second best study material after OG and Gmatprep.
  7. Ans D. We need ing form for active voice and ed form for passive.
  8. D for me. 2 prepositions together 'of between' looks fishy.
  9. You are trying to prove it in this way. Since 3 ^ 10 = -3 ^ 10 -> 3 ^ 5 = -3 ^ 5 This is faulty. In reality, 3 ^ 10 = -3 ^ 10 -> |3| ^ 5 = |-3| ^ 5 I may not be very clear but the way you proved looks faulty. May be some expert can explain.
  10. Well I second v-rap in that there could be many solns depending on the angle. So some additional info is reqd.
  11. Please make a search before starting a new thread. In case don't agree with the previous discussion, just bump up the same post. http://www.www.urch.com/forums/gmat-sentence-correction/18003-concepts.html
  12. There is a html file set1-20A&E.htm in the zip file at the lickn below. It gives explnations that are helpful and also points some wrong answers. Set1-20 - eSnips, share anything
  13. Only thing that looks bad in C is "Some people".
  14. Putting it simply, since airport was unable to pay operating expenses from the revenues it obtained from other sources plus user tax, this implies D. Since, op exp > other revenues + user tax => op exp > other. However, I'm assuming here that airport was not able to pay op exp even after using all rev from other resources as well as all user tax it could get. This assumption makes sense from business perspective but is not explicitly mentioned.
  15. Let me be the first to congratulate you. Congrats Arjun, It would be really a great feeling to achieve significantly more that what you expected.
  16. Y^X In Y ^ (1/2), let's say Y=-5 (-5) ^ (1/2) = sqrt(5) i where i=sqrt(-1) and sqrt(5) i is a complex number. However, GMAT deals only with real numbers. So one is better off by just considering integer values of X in this case and still getting the answer.
  17. My answer is B. Candidates - A, B, C, Irrelevant - D, E Lets negate all three. A. highway traffic has increased over the past year - Still, speed reduction could reduce fatalities. Arg remains intact. B. the majority of drivers didn't obey the new speed limit - Arg falls apart, this means speed limit has no effect. This arg could have been better had it said 'All' instead of 'majority of'. C. there is no relation between driving speed and the number of automobile accidents - This option is very enticing. But here the author introduced accidents instead of fatalities. Speed may not have a relationship with no of accidents, but still it could be conected with fatalities. Had this option used fatalities instead of accidents, this could have been the correct answer. Please post the source and the OA.
  18. You cracked verbal man. Could you share some tips.
  19. Hi Prawler, I think you are overdoing it. Give some time for the brain to digest things. Would be better if you do not work on a book at a stretch. Don't take it otherwise, just my 2 cents. In case u r comfortable with the approach, no problem.
  20. Hi LegoLife, The link about Appositive mentions that -- An appositive is a noun or noun phrase that renames another noun right beside it. Then in the sentence below, how does this definition hold good. The company posted 100% rise in revenues this quarter, an incident that pushed its share prices higher. What is the nearest noun which the appositve refers to. Or is the appostive treating the complete previous sentence -"The company posted 100% rise in revenues this quarter" as a noun phrase and refering to it. Please clarify.
  21. First option. I think this is correct. One of the cars that run on hydrogen is also going to run on electricity.
  22. My pick E. I feel 'that' in C refers to the action of drawing in exposed parts. Seems wrong.
