  1. No i did not submit my GRE scores to U of T. I took GRE because I am plannign to study in the US... I think you should have submitted a TOEFL score though. Wasn't it required on the application, if you did schooling outside of North America? Also, I think in recent times, U of T is unfortunately making admission more and more difficult for international students. That is my feeling anyways. I have a few Persian friends , who have told me that even some top students from schools like Sharif Inst. of Tech. in Iran are getting rejected by Toronto...but they are getting admission to schools of equal or better quality in the US. Hmmm... but it is really hard to say why you received a rejection, since you have a Canadian passport, and an excellent GPA.. Maybe it was related to your SOP or recommendations?
  2. Azimuth, my profile is: GPA = 3.89/4.00 (undergrad in ECE) GRE = 780Q, 590V, 5.0/6.0A I am currently finishing my Masters in ECE at U. Windsor (Canada). I have 2 IEEE conference publications..and a journal paper submission.. In most universities in Canada, an M.Eng degree doesnt allow you to continue to PhD studies... You will usually have get your MS first. Although I know a couple people going to Toronto straight into PhD (in ECE) from bachelors... As for transferring from MEng to MS, i dont know how that works or how easy it is... you should maybe talk to people at the respective university. Derek: I dont think having an MEng gives you an advantage in getting admission to PhD in the US.. Chances of admission would probably stay the same. Your GPA will be very important. The only advantage i could see would be a possible reduction in the course requirements once you are in a PhD program in the US..
  3. Hey Derek, No I will not be attending UofT, but I asked you because I know MEng is not enough to get into a Canadian PhD program... Since you plan to go into banking industry, i think an MEng would be perfect for you. The program is relatively short and you will gain some technical knowledge from the good courses offered at UofT...and you never know..if you ever want to have a technical job, this degree would certainly be useful..
  4. Hi Derek... Would like to do a PhD eventually (in Canada)? Or are you more interested in working in industry?
  5. FYI, I know a couple people who have received official rejections this week via email ...
  6. Haven't received anything official yet ...
  7. I think that once you finalize a decision to work with a professor, an official admission package is sent to you....That's what happened with my friend. In my case, a couple professors have personally offered me positions, but I didnt accept them, so I haven't received any official letter either. You are probably right that the final letters will be sent out in June (for those not assigned a supervisor yet and also rejections).
  8. I would say that computer engineering usually comes under Electrical engineering (not comp sci) at most universities.. Many universities have changed their EE department name to ECE. CE is much more hardware oriented than CS but includes some software topics too...I think the following would come under CE: Digital VLSI (IC design), computer architecture, CAD (writing software for EDA), Computer vision, etc. I would say CS is more on the system level, rarely touching lower abstraction levels...and definitely more software oriented also. EE would include rest of the typical areas: analog design, communication, signal processing, EM...etc. Generally I would say CE is a field combining CS and EE.. So I guess if a university doesnt have an actual CE or ECE department, the CE ranking is based on teh quality of the specific areas offered by CS and EE... What are other people's opinions?
  9. It seems like a lot of people got into the grad program in EE/CSE/EE:systems, but without any financial aid...
  10. i've received admission decisions (PhD) from McGill and U of Toronto, and I think I read that someone received admission to UBC for Masters in ECE...
  11. i'd say call the ece department or send them an email. After I sent an email, they sent their decision within a day (replying to my email).
  12. Very true.... do you think they'd be considered top 10 ECE in North America though ? (as U of T claims?) I'm just curious... although these rankings do not really mean that much..
  13. This is an older thread...but I had some questions about Canadian Universities... I'm actually a Canadian, and have attended a Canadian university for my BS and MS in ECE. I have been admitted to both McGill and U of T... But how do these universities compare to schools (ECE) in the US like UMich-AA, Carnegie Mellon, UIUC, UT-Austin, Cornell? (ive been admitted to most of these too) Apparently U of T ECE dept ranks in the top 10 for ECE in north america, but as far as reputation, I dont think they match up with these US schools. Funding is also quite difficult to obtain... the only way I would manage at a Canadian institution is by having a national research fellowship.. Any comments would be appreciated..Thanks!
  14. Received acceptance from UT-Austin yesterday...So definitely still worth keeping hopes up.
  15. Sorry to hear... You received it through mail, not email, right?
  16. I didnt get anything. I'm stil waiting for UIUC......not sure if it is possible for admission anymore. Although Cornell and UTA got back to me today with positive responses.....so I dont know?
  17. probably has nothing to do with the rankings...
  18. Hi everyone, I was just wondering what your opinions are on PhD ECE programs at Cornell and CMU... I have been accepted to both with full aid. I would be working in the area of computer architecture and VLSI. My visit to CMU was really great....there was nothing to complain about really. Both schools have professors who'd i'd work with...CMU has a really strong computer engineering group..Cornell is an ivy league institution (should i care about that??) Now I just have to make a decision. Thanks in advance.
  19. I have not heard anything from UTA ECE yet for PhD. It may be because my complete application was a few days late...
  20. You should find out if they (the new school) will allow you to defer your PhD studies for a semester or so. How much extra time do you think you will need to finish your MS?
  21. Has anyone received word from UMich EE regarding financial aid yet?
  22. Yup they are for 2007. I forced my friend to buy the subscription today lol, and it matches.
