  1. I'd say a PhD from a low-ranked university makes the future successful academic career impossible almost surely. Thus, you're only left with the private sector. As for it, most companies do not require the doctoral degree - a masters would suffice, IMHO. There are exceptions, of course, but they do not constitute a high proportion, so if I were you, I would have probably chosen not to attend a PhD program.
  2. Actually, it's harder to get for an econ program at Stanford GSB than at Stanford econ. My classmate applied to both, and was accepted at both places, too (along with Harvard and MIT econ), and he finally picked up Stanford GSB Econ Analysis and Policy PhD program. Therefore, I would not assume that these programs are "ridiculous", let alone softer and easier to get in...
  3. AFAIK Eviews comes with a help file, which is rather big. However, this file includes not only details about Eviews commands, but also brief theoretical summaries of the related econometric routines. That thing is really great...
  4. That's right, after getting used to Scientific Word TeX documents are not comparable to the ones produced by MS Word + MathType. It took me about a week to get around, so it is not too hard...
  5. You must have a J-1 visa for your spouse to get a work permit (after getting J-2). Period. No exceptions are made.
  6. Probably the answer is 50%, if I'm not mistaken in calculations. See, 7% = 0.07 and 14.5%=0.145, then 3*0.07+2*0.145 = 0.21 + 0.29 = 0.5 = 50%, that's my way to solve it.
  7. Q1 - A , cuz if A, then one of the numbers is even (other odd) and is not a prime Q2 - A, cuz 3 -7 Q3 - B, cuz m = abs(n) and m n m = -n, then m+n = 0, and mn = - n^2 Q4 - D, let x=6, y=2, then 6>4; now let x = -6, y = -2, then -6 sorry, a bit lazy to continue...
  8. Oh, man, i have interpreted "kms" as "kilometers per second", and not like "kilometers". obviously I was wrong.
  9. The average was 12.5 kms, I suppose. It is rather simple - the average is calculated as the following ratio: ( 10s * 10kms + 10s * 15 kms ) -------------------------------- = (10kms+15kms)/2 = 12.5 kms ( 10s + 10s )
  10. Bond, in finance, usually a formal certificate of indebtedness issued in writing by governments or business corporations in return for loans. It bears interest and promises to pay a certain sum of money to the holder after a definite period. I guess that the answer must be D. Simply because it is not said that the same price was paid in each of the two cases. If the price were the same, then the answer would be B, but it is not said so here.
  11. Yeah, Kara's great, you should contact her if there are any questions...
  12. Today I wrote emails to all institutions that have offered me admission. I decide to go to UMN. For everyone on waitlist at Brown or PSU - one place is vacant now. Hope it helps...
  13. I've been accepted but it is VERY much likely that I'll go to UMN, so ...
  14. As for me a good grasp of UG macro intuition can be got via reading either Mankiw "Macroeconomics" or Blanchard "Macroeconomics" (do not confuse it with Blanchard and Fischer "Lectures on Macroeconomics"). But that's IMO
  15. As far as I understand, being frank in your SoP is a good thing to do. I've spend my two undergrad years doing everything but not studying, and wrote that sincerely. Since the junioк year, I began to study and my grades improved dramatically, and I also mentioned that. What you have to say, I guess, is that you've been working damn hard, and you've realized that it is academics where you belong, and you've had enough industry experience... You must make'em think you've tried everything, and have chosen research, and this is where you can make use of your research experience...
