  1. aah this is bizarre! The basic answer BSchools search for is 'why' in their essays, and certainly a candidate applying to a school can't cite fee as the only reason to take gre and not gmat. Wouldnt that question his thought process, expecially considering that BSchools are on the whole lot more expensive than their contemporaries?
  2. Have been getting some PMs lately for additional tips to ace GMAT. so I thought, I'll put a public reply free for all. What I would advice is, make an excel sheet and record yr daily scores in the following manner Name of the test - eg Nova book Q 11 - Q 21 Topic: DS Time taken : Try to practice giving yourself lesser time than will be available to u in the test. I used to practice each section in 1 h 05 min. That ways, I made sure that even if I stuck somewhere in my actual test, I would not become too nervous and would still be able to keep my cool Number of Mistakes: of course u know what to write for this one Number of intelligent mistakes: Mistakes which give you a new concept. Also, list the topics where u did the mistakes eg idiom consider or inequality - multiplying by negative number Number of silly mistakes : write even these mistakes in bold. eg did 2+ 2 =5 ALSO, maintain an error log of each of your mistakes and make it a point of going through the error log every single day. Don’t focus on how much material you do for GMAT, but how well you do whatever little practice you do. Perhaps this list seems too overwhelming to you, but rely on me and over time you'll see this very exercise going a long way to help you in yr prep.
  3. what a score!! you surely rock and hats off to your determination as well. Hope you do get into the PhD program of your choice
  4. Time Management - yeah that is pretty difficult at times. But take heart in the fact that most of us GMATters are working full time, and you are definitely not the only one. How you utilise time most efficiently can actually be judged more or less by you yourself, what I can just advice is that try GMATting only when you are in that frame of mind. I tried to give myself more hours on weekends, and would get up early on weekdays to squeeze some time. I kept myself away from phones or other possible disturbaces whenever I would study, yet I tried not to let the test burn me out. Every once in a while, I did chill out with friends so that when I got back to the books and computer again, my mind felt fresh and better prepared to take the new stuff in. What do top scorers do differently? Basically nothing, except that they make some grand plans and then implement them. Here are 5 common habits of most 700+ scorers 1) They book the test dates well in time. That is so say that even if they decide in Aug that they want to take the test in Sept, they will book the appointment to give themselves the extra push. 2) They maintain an error log of their mistakes and visit the list regularly. 3) They emphasize more on quality than quantity. Whatever they do, they do well, trying to understand why a particualr answer is wrong/right rather that only focussing on the number of rights. 4) They do not hesitate from clarifying their doubts, nor from accepting their stupid logics. They are willing to learn. 5) Every once in a while they give themselves a break form GMATting; they know that they'll be able to back rejuvenated. Understand that the GMAT is a fairly easy game. There is nothing unbeatable about it. It is more about smart test taking and strategising. Stay upbeat and stay focussed, if we all could do it, you surely can.:2cents: Cheers!
  5. you may want to read my answer to interpreting scores at http://www.www.urch.com/forums/just-finished-my-gmat/49435-730-97-q-49-v40-2.html
  6. infact these two books should be your bible. The only thing that you'll need to do extra is practice on topics you find hard in quant section etc. ====================================================== I am also attaching a concise sentence correction review document in zipped format which covers the general points and also directs you to sites where you can find more help on the specific topic. All the best people Cheers
  7. I know what it feels just a few days before the test. Asking you to stay cool probably won't help because I am not telling you how. So I'll simply go to safely recommending you to get in touch with people who have taken the test and have scored well. Their experiences will definitely help. If you don't know many people you can read other posts in this very section of the TestMagic Forum. Some of these threads can be really inspiring. Also, you might want to read some different books off and on, or listen to your favorite music, or play golf etc. Do whatever, but don't just burn yourself out. Try to give your brain some rest in between your practice sessions to let it assimilate whatever new knowledge you are putting into it. Coming to your quant question, yes the entire test is relative to how well you are doing in the test. Even if you are answering correctly, my guess is that questions become tougher by around the 7th question. If you have done quants questions from TM though, you should have already eliminated most of the surprises. Further, I suggest that you re-check your answers to about the first 15 questions in each section, but only and only if you are not very slow with attempting the test. The early questions set the pace for the test and if you get the first ones correct, you are more likely to get a higher score. HTH, Chillpill
  8. I got a PM from another TestMagic member asking me about freely downloadable tests available on the net. So, here go the links for all. If you feel I've missed out some links, please feel free to add those as well to the list. http://cyberprep.com/bschool/gmatdx/startgmatdxv.htm http://www.allthetests.com/gmat_intro/index.shtml http://iiswinprd03.petersons.com/testprepchannel/gmat_sample_questions.asp http://www.ivyleagueadmission.com/mission.html http://tester.review.com/
  9. Yups, GMAT does stay on the mind for a long time. Only yesterday, I corrected my brother when he said he would be 'giving' a test. GMAT says 'taking' a test is the correct usage!!
  10. yups buddy am confirming my statement, or is this a claim!! the latter right? :p you see Q 49 means 90 percantile, but V 40 gets you a 90%, hence incresing the total score. You might want to check out a score scale at http://www.testmasters.net/gmat/GMATInformation/scale.aspx Cheers!!
  11. Hi dhiru I suggest u try and focus on areas where you make most of your mistakes. Send me a break up of any of your last tests alongwith the areas where you made mistakes, and I guess collectively we can figure out a better strategy for you Cheers:tup:
  12. One of the fellow members just questioned me about approximate GMAT scores. I feel that the following table might be of help. Verbal|Math|Percentile|Score GMAT 50 51 99 790 GMAT 50 46 96 780 GMAT 51 44 95 770 GMAT 50 47 97 770 GMAT 51 48 99 770 GMAT 49 47 96 760 GMAT 49 45 94 760 GMAT 50 42 92 750 GMAT 49 44 93 750 GMAT 49 42 91 750 GMAT 50 40 90 740 GMAT 49 41 90 740 GMAT 50 40 90 730 GMAT 50 38 88 730 GMAT 48 41 89 730 GMAT 45 44 89 720 GMAT 47 42 89 720 GMAT 49 38 87 710 GMAT 48 40 88 710 GMAT 48 38 86 710 GMAT 47 40 87 710 GMAT 39 47 86 710 GMAT 43 44 87 710 GMAT 50 36 86 710 GMAT 48 38 86 700 GMAT 49 34 83 690 GMAT 48 37 85 690 GMAT 48 35 83 680 GMAT 49 33 82 680 GMAT 49 31 80 680 GMAT 40 42 82 680 GMAT 49 33 82 670 GMAT 50 29 79 660 GMAT 47 34 81 660 GMAT 49 29 78 650 GMAT 48 30 78 650 GMAT 42 39 81 650 GMAT 50 27 77 640 GMAT 49 27 76 640 GMAT 38 39 77 640 GMAT 51 27 78 630 GMAT 49 25 74 620 GMAT 48 25 73 610 GMAT 45 29 74 610 GMAT 46 26 72 600 GMAT 48 18 66 540 GMAT 48 17 65 540 GMAT 40 23 63 520 GMAT 50 21 71 610 Additionally, I have attached a guide by GMAC on interpreting GMAT scores that might prove useful. However, just keep in mind that these scores are only an approximation and should only be used to predict an approximate score. Your actual score shall depend on numerous factors, some of which are: 1) The number of mistakes you make in the first 10-12 questions The more the number the number of mistakes at the beginning of the test, the lesser the score. Also, getting question one wrong hurts more than getting the second or tenth question wrong. 2) The number of cumulative mistakes Again, that decreases your score drastically. Since the GMAT is an adaptive test, if you answer one question incorrectly, the next one is easier and hence less scoring. Therefore, if you happen to make a mistake on this question as well, you score drops further. 3) The number of questions you leave unanswered It is much more harmful to leave an unfinished section than to answer incorrectly. 4) Unmarked questions Some questions will be experimental and shall not be marked. Your score will not be affected regardless of whether you attempt them correctly or incorrectly. 5) Number of mistakes in the Quant section vs. number of mistakes in the Verbal Section It is common knowledge that improving your Verbal score raises the final score more sharply. Guess that provides a fair idea….
  13. Hey all, I have the following material available for sale. Kaplan 2004 with CD OG10 with Power prep software OG 11 with GMAT Prep Manhatten SC guide In addition the following computerized softwares are available for practice: Peterson, Crack GMAT, Nova, Arco, Kaplan workshop, Barron, Princeton, Cambridge and 800score set Please feel free to get back with any further questions that you might have. Best wishes for the exam.
  14. I guess I saw the same score with a total of 740!. Now is that just my halluciantion or a truth, you decide. Probably, the GMAC gives us some further the gradings in the individual sections that is not known to us. Eg it scores a 49 further into 49.0, 49.1 etc and then on the basis of both the sectional scores, decides the sum total. That's my :2cents: but since it just a speculation, feel free to disagree. BTW, schools look at the individual percantiles as well and for them a 730 does not imply only a score of 730, but an ability to score somewhere between 700 - 760. Plus, GMAT is only a health factor for them. So, chillax. :p
