  1. i'm sure adcoms prefer math majors to econ majors i don't think that a double major in math and econ is worth the effort, because i doubt that the gain is substantial. there are probably more efficient uses of your time (ie math, stats, graduate econ courses, personal time, etc) edit: also, i'm not sure that an undergraduate math for economists class would be useful for a math major, and probably does not help much in the admissions process. also, i'm sure there is someone at your university that has a better understanding of the admissions process than we do. my best advice is to ask them for help.
  2. aggregate "human capital" is unpractical because it is impossible to measure, and most macro models want to "go to the data."
  3. a math reu would be very good in my opinion, because it is concrete research experience on a math-based topic. further, this may also turn into a strong lor and/or a paper to submit w/ your application. applications are free, and positions are paid. if you have the opportunity to go to a math reu, i would highly recommend it. however, you will probably have to wait until next summer. i expect that all applications are past due.
  4. an A in grad micro most likely holds more weight than an A in the math course
  5. nobody really knows. ask your professors.
  6. getting a b in a graduate micro course is a bad signal to admissions committee. every other course that you take signals your expected performance indirectly. if you take graduate econ courses at a respectable university, you will be signalling your expected performance directly. top 25 programs do not want b students. with this in mind, i wouldn't sign up for the class unless you sincerely expect to get an a. talk to the professor, etc. if you aren't well-prepared now, and want to be well-prepared by fall, read mwg
  7. i don't see any courses in computational quantum mechanics listed
  8. five is greater than three my friend, and public perception is strictly increasing in nobel laureates, as i'm sure you will learn as an economics phd.
  9. nobel prize winner twenty years down the road? maybe. chicago wants to be the number one ranked school NOW.
  10. i have heard, from a reliable source, that chicago is trading steven leavitt to stanford for ken arrow
  11. i would take the math reu in almost any topic because it will most likely result in you (co)-writing a paper, and improves your reputation as a mathematician. i wouldn't be worried about the second point. also, being an ra doesn't necessarily mean doing research. you will most likely be doing the boring data work that (s)he doesn't want to.
  12. I submitted an engineering-related research paper that I did over the summer at a math reu with 3 others. I thought it was crap, but at least one of the people on the committee was impressed ("you were the guy with the crazy engineering paper?"). I got in.
  13. There is a big difference between becoming a painter and becoming an economist. We won't exactly be begging for change between classes. I don't think that you'll be getting anyone's sympathy by telling them you chose what you love and accepted the measly 100k starting salary.
  14. i prefer blank (printer) paper. i never bring my laptop to class.
  15. there was no option for "exactly as I expected"
  16. i don't see a choice for anarchy anywhere. northwest is close enough :)
  17. Is anyone arriving the morning of the Chicago flyout? I get in at 8am at O'Hare airport. If so, does anyone want to share a shuttle or cab?
  18. i arrive at o'hare at 8am on the 30th. if anyone wants to meet up, share a shuttle, etc, pm me
  19. 34000+36000(2.03)+36000(1.03^2+1.03^3+1.03^4+1.03^5)+100000+20000 ?
  20. I'm assuming that ACalc 2 is differentiation and (Riemann) integration of multivariable functions. In this case, I would choose topology for usefulness. They are probably equally good for signal strength.
