  1. Gents, what is the general rule here? Is it that the pronoun refers to the nearest subject, in that case D is best, or that each pronoun must have a clear unambiguous referant, in which case E is best?
  2. Also a CR question. However, it has already been discussed. http://www.www.urch.com/forums/gmat-critical-reasoning/56877-bf-scientist.html?highlight=disproportionately+large
  3. Hi Surya, seems more like a question for the CR section.
  4. http://www.www.urch.com/forums/gmat-sentence-correction/68375-997.html?highlight=languages Already discussed.
  5. http://www.www.urch.com/forums/gmat-sentence-correction/72320-tense-error.html?highlight=measures+evidentAlready discussed. I think you participated in the thread.
  6. A certain number when successfully divided by 8 and 11 leaves remainders of 3 and 7 respectively. What will be the remainder when the number is divided by the product of 8 and 11, viz 88? solution provided was: x = 11k + 7 11k + 7 = 3(mod 8) 3k+7=3(mod 8).......how? 3k=4(mod 8)......how? 3(k-1) = (mod 8) k=4(mod 8) x=11.4 + 7 = 51 (mod 88) OA = 51
  7. Am switching from E to B: "supporters claim" is a position and not a claim.
  8. If the single rate is still lower than the combined rates and many of United Shipping's former customers would prefer a combined rate for their various shipping services, then the official's prediction is supported. Option C should be the OA.
  9. Perhaps B. Option C says the materials used prior to 1990 and thereafter are roughly the same. Seems not to weaken the fact that the change in the physical condition of the boats was attributed to the manufacturers. If the materials are the same, then some other reasons must be responsible for the deteriorating form of the current boats.
  10. Admitted there was a typo. Although OA is not available, i think, by consensus, OA should be E.
  11. I see, that's inequality. The graph passess through 1st (m + n >0) and 3rd quadrants (m + n are both negative. So, m + n Both could you solve using test values? I tried and was just wasting time) It's a GMATPREP question. Thanks.
  12. Is m + z > 0? (1) m - 3z > 0 (2) 4z - m > 0
  13. T= R+L+P; T=total number of boxes Required to calculate R/P (1) L=0.3(R+L+P) => 0.7L=0.3(R+P) INSUF (2) R=P+10 INSUFF Combining, we have an equation with 3 unknowns. INSUFF (E)
  14. Sorry, i got this question without OAs from a friend. I thought it might be beneficial.
  15. B says "such an approach would radically reduce the incidence of felonious crimes", thus provides support for the position of the movement. BF2 refutes that position which BF1 tends to support. E i think should be the OA.
  16. C, D and E seem out of scope. A: equally likely to continue using tobacco B: equally likely to stop using tobacco How does the degree of depression affect the smokers in this case? Moreover, options A and B look alike. Difficulty in stoping a habbit (B) is explicitly tied to one's ability to continue such habbit (A). What do you guys think?
  17. A split between C and D. The conclusion says, " therefore,...it should be possbile to determine..." I thought it should been "therefore,... it is now possible to determine..." if the piece of information in the boldface were a discovery. Well, not very sure whether C or D but maybe C.
  18. There is a typo error; the word "to" should be there. I think no ambiguity over choice of E.
  19. Stem: Incidence of heart disease is greater in Great Britain than in US (probably beacause Britons take more red wine, which fights against heart disease, than the Americans) gap between per capita consumption of the two countries is falling (or shrinking), yet the effect cannot be felt. E says that per capita consumption of red wine has dropped (one expects a corresponding increase in the rate of heart disease), but that the side effect does not manifest until later in life - after 40. My preference is E.
  20. Agreed the sentence is awkwardly constructed, but that's the original version. I also went for D.
  21. The existence of any animal species can be threatened by either food scarcity or over- hunting by humans. In the case of the former, the predominant age of reproductive maturity among members of the species will be relatively older than would be the case in the absence of food scarcity. In the case of the later, the predominant age of reproductive maturity among members of the species will be relatively younger than would otherwise be the case. The age at which a given example of an extinct animal species reached reproductive maturity can be established by analysis of the fossil remains of the animal. Therefore, it should be possible to determine whether a given prehistoric species became extinct as a result of food scarcity or over-hunting. The boldface phrase plays which of the following roles? A. it is the primary position that the argument seeks to establish B. it is a judgment on which the argument relies C. it is evidence which supports the primary position of the argument D. it is a discovery which support the primary position of the argument E. is evidence presented to undermine the primary position of the argument
  22. The use of executive titles is avoided by some corporations due to concerns that the usage of these titles might discourage the flow of communication from top to bottom and vice versa. However, it is generally accepted that an executive with a title that reflects his position is afforded more respect in outside business dealings. One approach to resolve inherent contradictions of usage of the executive title would be for executives to use their titles when dealing with outside contacts and to avoid using their titles when dealing with others within the corporate hierarchy, since studies have shown that knowledge of this practice does not discourage the vertical flow of communication. In the above passage, the bolded phrases play which of the following roles? A. the first is a statement of a particular goal; the second is a statement of another competing goal. B. The first is a reason for the utilization of a particular policy; the second is a restatement of that policy C. The first is a position which the passage seeks to support; the second is reasoning offered in support in support of that position D. The first is a statement of a particular policy; the second is a reason that argues against the utilization of that policy E. The first is a reason that argues for the adoption of a particular policy; the second is evidence put forth in support of that reasoning Again, OA is NOT available.
  23. Unlike the most corporate mergers, which are driven by the desire to cut cost and improve efficiency, the recent merger of the nation’s largest internet provider and a prominent media company was intended to create revolutionary film library, as thousands of movies titles are available for download over the internet. A… B. and prominent media company are intended to create a revolutionary film library with thousands of movies titles are C. with a prominent media company is intended to create a revolutionary film library, with thousands of movies titles are D. with a prominent media company are intended to create a revolutionary film library, for thousands of movies titles to be E. and a prominent media company is intended create a revolutionary film library with thousands of movies titles
  24. A diet high in saturated fat content increases the likelihood of developing heart diseases. Several studies have shown that the regular, moderate intake of red wine decreases that likelihood. In the United States and Great Britain, the per-capita consumption of saturated fats is roughly equivalent. However, heart disease is less prevalent in Greta Britain than in the United States, possibly because the per-capita consumption of red wine is higher in Great Britain than in the United States. Interestingly, the gap between per-capita consumption rates of red wine in the two countries has been falling, yet no relative change in the incidence of heart disease has been noted. Which of the followings, if true, resolves the apparent paradox in the statements above? A. Heart disease generally results from the build-up of fatty plaques in the inner lining of the arterial vessels that supply blood to the heart muscles B. Per capita consumption of saturated fats has decreased notably in both countries over the past decade C. Per capita consumption of red wine has increased notably in the United States over the past decade D. The relative incidence of other factors that contribute to heart disease, such as cigarette smoking and high cholesterol levels, is roughly the same in both countries E. Per capita consumption of red wine among the under-40 age group in the Great Britain has dropped notably, but heart disease does not generally manifest until after the age of 40. Pls OA is NOT available for this question. Let's just discuss.
