  1. Hi All, Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I feel better after listening to you all. After doing some more research I found that 680 is decent score but some schools especially some in the top 10 have preference for a 80-80 balance. At the same time I also got to know some people who had similar score as mine were able to get admission in top 10 as ultimately overall application package matters. So far I got 50-50 views to app and to take exam again. I am more inclined to apply with current score. I just downloaded some forms and should be writing my first essay soon. Meanwhile I am still waiting for AWA score. I took exam almost 2 weeks back, any idea after how many days I can check AWA score online? I thought its 2 weeks. Regards, skarya P.S. I remember each of you very well and I value your words and help a lot.
  2. congratulations!!! "what a day..." - It was a wonderful day! a great score - especially - verbal 44. Good luck for phase 2. Regards, skarya
  3. Hi All, I have logged on after a long time. I am still unable to find answer why I failed but fact is that I did fail in my first attempt at GMAT. I took the exam last week and I scored 680 (Q50 V31). I prepared hard and worked systematically for constantly over 2.5 months. My prep test scores gave me the confidence that I can do well and my test scores ranged from 700-730 (with verbal scores ranging from 35 to 40) with minimum in one of GMATPrep where I tried different strategy of giving extra time to first 20 questions in verbal (similar to Quant) so I had to rush in last 20 and I was not able to reach last 7 questions. I scored 26 in verbal part of that test. So I constantly had this timing fear in back of my head that "what if" something similar happens in real test. I worked hard to get the timings right. The same "what if" thought kept haunting me and I was very anxious during the test for verbal part. I rushed through the whole verbal section with the fear of not finishing in time and I only realized this when I was at last question with 7 minutes to answer. I knew that something has gone wrong ... and it was reflected in 31 as verbal result. I am still coming to terms with the fact - i.e. 680 with V31 and Q50 (a skewed score) Though 3 of my top 5 choices schools have 680 as median score and my top priority schools have 700+ median (ISB and INSEAD), I can not decide on next steps. I only have a month time to either prepare for applications or take test again. I know that full application package depends on rest of the profile, recos etc. Profile: I am an engineer (non-IT) with 5years work experience, 2 years as team leadership experience with 6-sigma green belt certification. I have worked in 3 US based companies and have BTech and Master’s degrees in Engineering. I am settled in Singapore for past 8 years. I am concerned about sending applications to INSEAD and ISB. Any suggestions and inputs are welcome. Acknowledgement - A BIG Thank You - everybody on this forum and the Gurus. I will continue to contribute to this forum as much as I can. Thanks and Regards, skarya I know many would want to know about the whole test experience - well it was all pretty much same as GMATPrep except what I said about verbal part for me.
  4. any such problem try terminating points (TP) |x-2| => TP = 2 |x+2| => TP =-2 regions to test : .....-2.....+2..... 1. x x=-3 => |-3-2|+|-3+2|=|-5|+|-1|=5+1=6 > 4 x=-1 => |-1-2|+|-1+2|=|-3|+|+1|=3+1=4 = 4 x=0 => |0-2|+|0+2|=2+2=4 hence for all values of x=4 i.e. Is |x-2|+|x+2| sufficient 2. -2 x=-2 => |-2-2|+|-2+2|=4+0=4 x=+2 => |2-2|+|2+2|=0+4=4 so for all -2 sufficient D BTW post DS Qs in DS forum. Thanks!
  5. r=W-18=V+6 =>W-V=6+18=24 E reading eats up more time than actual working out :(
  6. P5-p1 = [9.5+0.25(5-1)] - [9.5+0.25(1-1)] = [9.5+0.25(4)] - [9.5+0.0]=0.25(4) = 1.00 B Not all OA given in sets are correct - hence do not get discouraged if immediately after doing sets you find see many of misses - it could be that OA is not correct.
  7. 2a+a.root2=16+16.root2 a.root2(1+root2)=16.(1+root2) a.root2=16 (a.root2 is the hypotenuse) B. profiler - you have solved for the length of side - beware of trap - hypotenuse length is asked.

  9. imoD other choices do not make sense A,B,C - not relevant E - strengthens
  10. imoA I worked it out as below: Contrary to the scholarly wisdom of the 1950’s and early 1960’s that predicted the processes of modernization and rationalization would gradually undermine it, ethnicity is a worldwide phenomenon of increasing importance. 1. that predicted the processes ... would/to/gradually? As something is "predicted" in past => "would" is require to refer to future from past 2. undermine vs. undermining As something is "predicated" so it will "undermine" - "undermining" implies that "undermining" already stated and is in progress (A) would gradually undermine it (B) to be a gradual undermining of it © would be a gradual undermining of ethnicity - gradually undermine it (D) to gradually undermine ethnicity (E) (missing verb) gradually undermining it discussed before: http://www.www.urch.com/forums/gmat-sentence-correction/53058-another-strange-1-sc-1000-a.html?highlight=Contrary+scholarly Although I picked D earlier - I don't remember the reason for doing so. Anyway read the post - someone mentioned that D got split infinitive issue as well.
  11. Everyone here is trying to help and learn from each other - lets not forget the primary objective (a good gmat score) and work towards it contructively and in process of doing so - make friends and avoid criticism. I got to learn a lot in process - "Everyone is expert unless proven wrong - everyone gets proven wrong in some aspects of life (after all its full of surprises) - so no one is expert." -CR argument
  12. imoE The lawyers for the patent holder pressed the federal judge to impose an injunction against the hardware manufacturer, arguing that they should take immediate action in order to prevent further economic damages against their client. they should take immediate action in order to prevent further economic damages against their client the judge act immediately in order to prevent the client from suffering further damages of an economic nature they should act immediately to prevent further economic damages being suffered by the client the judge act immediately in order to prevent them from suffering economic damages further immediate action should be taken to prevent their client from suffering further economic damages
  13. imoC even most adept forger cannot duplicate all the of the characteristics analyzed by program - hence forging signature alone is not enough
  14. imoA increasing the number of police officers is of no use - in other words law enforcement programs will not be effective
  15. none of the choice supports both premises i.e. allergy and math skills C looks best among worst.
  16. imoE ID; ID. Hi GPZ500, Only for independent markers such as "therefore", "however", "moreover" etc. a semicolon is required. For other type of conjunctions such as "but", "for", "so" etc. a comma is required. e.g. I went to the store; however, I didn't buy any bread. I went to the store, but I did not buy any bread. Also note a comma after "however" - is required. Hi Seth, A request, please only post the question and hold on to answer so that other choices can be discussed as well. I agree knowing why an answer is correct is important; however, knowing why an answer is wrong is equally important too. Thanks! regards, skarya
  17. imoA I don't really see a problem with original sentence! All choices but A either have redundancy or have original meaning changed. A. war brewing in Europe, the industrial revolution well-established, and a nascent communication age. - correct B. war brewing in Europe, the industrial revolution surging, and a nascent communication age. - original sentence meant "well-established" C. war (brewing) in Europe, the industrial revolution well-established, and a nascent communication age. - change in meaning - when century began war already strated D. war brewing in Europe, the industrial revolution well-established, and the communication age beginning. - though "nascent" mean "beginning to exists or develop" - usage of "beginning" along with "began" sounds awkward - "This century began with ... the communication age beginning" E. war brewing in Europe, the industrial revolution well-established, and saw the birth of the communication age. - "wordy" - awkward
  18. Thanks for pointing that out! I didn't remember answering this question earlier; however, as I look at it again - I realize that earlier I answered incorrectly. Erin's comment on this question: http://www.wikigrammar.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1293&hl=Soaring+television+costs regards, skarya Seems like I can eliminate better now than before! It is a confidence boost when I need it most.
  19. congratulations! wish u good luck for the application! "...well, i think this is a test that verifies how good are you at problem solving. rather it is a test that sees whether you can identify certain patterns, especially in the verbal section..." I guess you meant its more of pattern identification then problem solving? regards, skarya

  23. vijay, a run-on sentence => in a compund sentence in which multiple clauses are not combined properly (i.e. without using proper conjunctions or punctuations) e.g. I went to the store, I did not buy any bread. (INCORRECT) Sentence above contains two independent (ID) clauses: ID1: I went to the store ID2: I did not buy any bread For a sentence with two independent clause, either a semicolon is used or a period. I went to the store; I did not buy any bread. (CORRECT) I went to the store. I did not buy any bread. (CORRECT) Another way to correct is to use convert one of the independent clause into subordinate aka dependent clause by using logical conjunction. I went to the store, but I did not buy any bread. (CORRECT) When I went to the store, I did not buy any bread. (CORRECT) HTH! regards, skarya
  24. imoB suffering from ... resulting from ... looks attractive until one reads for meaning.
