  1. That is interesting to know, I am surprised that they didn't give you an acceptance (those *******)!!! You would think the marginal cost of taking on an NSF scholar would be low and the fact you won it must evidence your ability to do extremely well, i would even say that it is evidence you would do better than their other non-nsf admits. I think it is the bias against state schools, the people at princeton and berkeley probably can't imagine a life outside of harvard and yale where people don't drive BMW's and go boating on the weekend, they can't see past UFlorida and comprehend your achievements.
  2. I had no idea the CIA was competing with research universities, central banks, other private sector firms, etc. How do their spies tell each other apart, 'Don't shoot, I am from MIT'. I am glad though that CIA economists are so well compensated.:D
  3. Wow, an unfunded PhD in a very expensive city with an enormous amount of students competing against each other for funds, faculty attention, and the ever-present fear that they very well could kick you out. Sounds like fun! See you all there!
  4. Married to a the daughter of rich oil tycoon who buys universities and top journals for me so I can get endowed chairs and many publications.
  5. douggator, congrats on your NSF!!!!!!! are you going to try to get yourself 'unrejected' from MIT? Also are you going to contact your 'still waitings' and tell them about your award? I am interested to see if MIT unrejects you and see if Harvard and Stanford quickly accept you and bend over backwards to get you to flyouts and basically put you into VIP status if they haven't been waiting for NSF results already. Keep us updated and best of luck.
  6. The website said something like, ' we rate your application in the 70th percentile or below of applicants'. Is this an arbitrary number they give to all rejected applicants or did anyone actually score higher or lower than this?
  7. This video is not unlike the terrorist videos where they force hostages to testify on video. Do you think there was someone in the back holding a gun to them? It is so funny that they are obviously reading big cue cards in the back. In the future they need to hire famous actors to do their recruiting.
  8. Two questions I would like to ask current grad. students. How does your program feel about using solutions manuals and past students' solved problem sets? In my experience solution manuals have been extremely helpful to check my answers or get me started on difficult problems. It seems I remember there was fiasco a while back where students were kicked out of econ programs for using solution manuals and there was a link to a website with solution manuals on econphd.net that got removed because of this and other legality issues.
  9. Wait a second is FI starting a religion? He talks like everyone who PM's him has become his convert and continues to brag about how many PM's he has gotten for advice and keeps emphasizing how he is 'helping' people and his two fake friends who know him both talk about his great advice and how he is trying to 'help'. Also, is Harvard really so unstimulating that second years come to TM to answer hundreds of PM's? I have to say I look forward to being a student of FI, I would love to sit in class and hear a professor talk about how great he is and how much better he is than everyone else. I think that it will be kind of sad at FI's funeral, he will be a great nobel prize winner, yet the inscription on his tombstone will not be unlike the following: Here lies a miser who lived for himself He spent his whole life gathering pelf Where he is now and how he fares nobody knows and nobody cares
  10. yeah, its pretty crazy, I got the following email: Dear Applicant, A quick glance at your application made us laugh out loud that you thought you had the slightest chance of getting accepted. The admissions committee had a great time trying to throw your application into a garbage can at the other end of the room. Though you will amout to being a failure in life we are flattered by your interest in our school and we will enjoy spending your application fee tonight at a fancy restaurant. Your application was the weakest we have seen in many years here at UCB and we would appreciate it if you did not step foot on our campus. May the welfare system treat you well, UCB Graduate School.
  11. I think the adcom reread your SOP and realized that they misunderstood your truly sincere desire to study economics and took your link off so they could reconsider. Either that or they just found out that you were indeed an international grandmaster in chess.
  12. Stanford was your backup? what did you go to a community college? my safety, in case I didn't get into MIT, was Harvard:mad:. I got in but let's hope I don't have to rely on such an unselective school.
  13. Hey I got that call too! but I was offered 150k a year with the benz because they found out about how well I am at grading principles of econ tests and my amazing verbal GRE score. I had to decline as well, I have my heart set on Portuguese Catholic U.
