  1. I had called. I still have not received anything, however.
  2. Are you expected to have brand new essays and new recommendations? Or can you reuse most of your old material?
  3. They told me official letters are being mailed sometime this week.
  4. If you are interested in IO, you should go to Northwestern, no question. They are arguably better than Chicago in this area anyway.
  5. With those views, you're a libertarian in my book.
  6. To back this up: I took only two math courses in college (multivariable calculus and linear algebra). Two more if you include econ stat (a joke course) and undergrad econometrics. But I was still able to get into Chicago (2/3 offer), Stanford with funding, and Northwestern with funding.
  7. My waitlist email was different. They told me "there was a great deal of enthusiasm for my application" (ironically followed, of course, by telling me I was on the waitlist). They said they would like to hear from me about my interest in NYU and communicate with them in case they were one of my top choices.
  8. It's hard to pin a probability on it (and, not being a PhD myself, I am not usually present for the PhD hiring discussion). I can say that less than 10% of our economics PhD's come from schools outside the top 30. But, to be fair, my firm is probably more selective than the average economic consulting firm (this is certainly true for the undergrads we hire).
  9. I currently work for an economic consulting firm and can attest that MBA's do indeed get hired here; however, it is uncommon. I can also say that, for PhD's, the quality of your school matters a lot. We typically only hire from top 30 programs. There was a long thread on economic consulting that in this forum a month or two ago that has a lot of useful information you might like to read.
  10. So does anybody know if candidates with the 2/3 offer (tuition waiver, no living stipend) for Chicago get reimbursed for traveling expenses for visiting day? My letter made no mention of it, and I can't seem to get in touch with the department's administrator.
  11. I just got the unpersonalized email as well. It mentions I will have a "financial aid" offer, but it doesn't get any more specific than that.
  12. My letter (2/3 offer) makes no mention of funding, so I imagine not.
  13. Same here. And yes, I was an NSF applicant.
  14. I've heard that Harvard and MIT (and perhaps Chicago too) often waitlist American applicants until the NSF results are released.
  15. DC is very expensive. Expect to pay at least $800/month for a small studio apartment. I would expect Columbus, OH to be less than half of that.
  16. Got my official Northwestern email today. $20K fellowship for first year; funding for 2-5 years will be at least that amount, with RA/TA duties perhaps required depending on performance.
  17. My link has also appeared. Funding details "to be sent" it says.
  18. I got the same email.
  19. I took a real analysis class while I was working in the consulting world (which is definitely fewer hours than IBanking) and I found it unbearable. The proof-based class was definitely much more work than any of my previous calc and statistics class. And if I had a bad week at work (say, 60 hours), the last thing I wanted to do is go home to do a few hours of hard math.
