  1. yesss.... my turn. This would be my ranking of top 10 programs (not departments). 1. MIT 2. Harvard 3. Princeton 4. Yale 5. Berkeley Stanford Northwestern NYU 9. Chicago 10. Penn, Minnesota
  2. Hey I have a friend who is doing a pub quiz about econ, and I wanted to help her out with some good questions. They have to be for laymen, I suppose the typical participant has a bachelor's degree. Anyone have any fun ideas? :p
  3. Now taking bets that this poster is the OP with a new account.
  4. Wow if you google this you will see that this person has been spamming the entire web. haha. Quotes about the troll: I guess what I liked most about her posts was how sincere she was. She honestly believed that there was a massive conspiracy out to ruin her career ... and didn't realize that her career was instead ruined by her own blatent insanity. To me, she really epitomized that radical, semi-psychopathic fringe of the XOXO board. She was really ****ed up though - probably a schizophrenic who had fallen off her meds. I will admit that it was kind of hilarious when people used to bait her by saying that they knew him and he was a great guy, which would inevitably cause her to spin into a frenzy of hateful spamming.
  5. Haha yeah I'll be there. There will be many others I am sure as well.
  6. Haha hey how do you know my fondness for sleep! I agree that I was thoroughly impressed by NYU as well (caveat: this was my first flyout). As was said everyone is incredibly positive, even first years (the ones who were there anyways heh). And especially 2nd years! They really really put off the impression that this is a place where student/faculty interaction is very much common and encouraged, and there seem to be many great avenues to present research informally among faculty and classmates. I was also really excited to hear about some of the field courses (in particular political economy - and how Persico, Lizzeri teach the sequence --> in a manner that seems very much in tune with the aspects of thinking about creative papers and getting into research). I felt that NYU really really takes its training very seriously / rigorously and it seems Ok's math for econ II course is a big hit. I think there was 1 girl who did not pass prelims? But in any case the failure rate is very low. There were alot of positives so much so that I was trying to think of some negatives. All I have is that: First year is hard (fair enough) You don't get offices in first year, and when you do they are shared offices (this I think this reflects the fact that this is NYC we are talking about, and space is hard to come by). It isn't uncommon to take 6 years to complete your PhD (roughly half do?). The econometrics 'presentation' was a bit lacklustre compared to the other ones (I think this may have reflected that due to circumstances a few the faculty were not available for it) As you can see I am grabbing to find negatives. Program appears to have very solid training, and there appear to be many opportunities to get started with research, and discuss/present it among your peers/faculty.
  7. I think it may be tough, depending on if your professors have good connections with people at the top 5, or if you have made a very good impression on them (best student in a few years or something). On the other hand the good news is that think about why you want a PhD, and most likely you will find that there are many top-20 programs which will help you meet your goals.
  8. Institution: LSE Program: Economics PhD Decision: Rejected Funding: Notification date: 3/30 Notified through: Checked Website Comments: Ha, very interesting considering this was supposed to be a 'safety' of sorts.
  9. Tell me about it. I did make it through eventually though:). (and then found my subway line was shut down :hmm:)
  10. http://blog.internetnews.com/apatrizio/orly_owl.jpg (the moderators are going to get back to find that TM has degenerated into every other internet forum in existence)
  11. pseudo-relevant article by Simon Johnson The Quiet Coup - The Atlantic (May 2009)
  12. I believe the troll has posted here to inform us that he is between the ages of 9 and 11. Hang in there buddy, puberty is just around the corner.
  13. Bumping this... don't make me use the email list they provided us with!
  14. Will be 23 in the fall for PhD
  15. Knowing nothing about the situation, (assuming the Prof's were the same that year as surrounding years) it sort of looks like the group of students may have been of lower quality that particular year. (macro failure rate is up as well). Just taking a stab in the dark..:hmm:
  16. This would be true if the OP wasn't considering a PhD, but since (s)he is this should not matter.
  17. Same can be said for Vancouver (also free transit!) Go to UBC.
