  1. 800score.com has a weird scoring system. I dont think any test other than Kaplan and Powerprep can give an accurate score.
  2. Gre_K & the rest of TM, How you guys?. Long time. Yes some do cheat. But I believe this cheating will help only for about 30-40 extra points. Nothing more. College look at the entire score (Q,V,AWA), so it's very important to get a 4+ in AWA.
  3. Everyone appreciates your effort, but sharing copy-protected content on TM is against the forum rules. So before Erin removes this thread, you better do it yourself.
  4. Analcogon: I wish I was from the IIT's. But, I'm from a second tier engineering college in South India!
  5. GRE is an unfair exam for many of us, but then school's think its important. It tests all-round ability of a person to think, write and reason. I'm an engineer and the verbal standard in the GRE is really difficult for me. But I worked hard and got a respectable score. Similarly, ETS expects journalists and art people to work on Math.
  6. Gre_K: I seriously doubt if GRE is an indicator of IQ or Math ability. I think what got me through was calmness during the test and ability to see through ETS's traps. And about the essay competition, I'm sure you'll kick my ***. I'm just glad to get 5.0 in my AWA, could'nt really expect more. Shad: I think you should do BigBook questions. I learnt a lot of ETS traps present in RC's by doing BigBook. Reading the passage is one part, but looking out for the differences between similar looking right and wrong answer is a totally different thing.
  7. Ancalagon: Yep, I'm from India. Applying for Computer Science and Engineering for Fall 08.
  8. Thanks Wahl. I just checked up how I did on my GRE. 9. Hi Wahl, Can you give me the phone number for getting the reg. no? The ETS site has many numbers and I'm unable to find the right one.
  10. GRE_K, I still don't have my registration number as I have not got my score card yet. But the online Score By Phone service will accept confirmation number (which I have in my Email) using which they tell me my score. Is there any way to get the Registration number?
  11. Hey Cristina, What a co-incidence. Just today I checked up my AWA score via telephone and found out that I got a 5.0. These results co-relate exactly with the ScoreItNow results that I used to get. Looks like ScoreItNow does a pretty good job of predicting your AWA score. Maybe a +/- 0.5 point variation.

    Score.it

Looks like the score.it.now results are pretty accurate. I used to get a 5.0 most times on it and ended up with a 5.0 in my real GRE
  13. Hey no need to feel depressed. If you have time I suggest you practice with scoreitnow and retake your GRE. Otherwise just concentrate on your SOP and make sure its quality compensates for your low GRE score.
  14. Real exam experience (plus tons of bigbook and PP tests) - RC's vary in length. You may get 2 short RC's and 1 long RC, or 2 long RC's and 1 short. The short one's are usually around 30lines in length and the long ones are 85-115 lines. - I'm not too sure about the quality of the RC's in the 3000 RC book as I have never done them. But I can assure you that the best practice for RC's is the bigbook. - The RC answers are very standardized. After doing lots of practice I believe we can eliminate atleast 2-3 out of the 5 answers without even reading the passage. The main problem is selecting the right answer between the 2 remaining answers which look very similar. I used to find the differences between the answers and reason out why such difference exists and then eliminate one of them. I think this strategy paid off as I got a 700+ in Verbal. - If you get a RC in the top 10-12 questions, you need to spend some time on it. As a guideline I used to keep 5 minutes for a short RC with 2 questions and use 7 minutes for a long RC with 4 questions.
  15. Moreover the GRE maybe used to act as a tie-breaker. Assume the college has a single seat left, and they need to chose two candidates with similar profiles. Then they would pick the guy with 1550 rather than the one with 1300.
  16. ^ I doubt your weakness is only in RC's. Because answering all questions other than RC's will fetch a score of about 500 (assume 80% correct). Work on your vocab and verbal skills. Concentration should not be a problem. You need to fool yourself into believing that the RC's are very interesting. Rarely we find RC's on the GRE which suite our tastes.
  17. LOL Rabid, I think the main reason many of us study hard to get a higher score is in part to satisfy our ego/expectations (I remember GRE_K mentioning the same elsewhere). I doubt for a science program a 730 Verbal score will matter much. It may, however, improve chances for a guy with moderate academics (like me). Overall performance on the GRE is very important. A 700 in Verbal and a 3.0 in AWA will reflect poorly.
  18. USC gives out admits pretty easily for MS CS. I would say a score of 1150 (700+ in Q) is enough.
  19. ^ I think it applies generally to everyone who is applying for a science program. Verbal scores about 500+ and AWA scores around 4 are needed to pass the cut-off that colleges set.
  20. Hi, Nice score nonetheless. It depends on the program your applying to. If its a science or an engineering one, then they just look for a 500+ on a verbal. But I don't think your explanation would work for your application. The adcom know that one section will be experimental and they expect equal performance on all. Good luck for your admission process.

    Score.it

I think it's pretty accurate indicator of your essay score. Will confirm this as soon as I get my real AWA score
  22. Great score!. Congrats Mikhail, forget about the rumors. Just concentrate on your test and I'm pretty sure you will end up with scores similar to what you get on your PowerPrep, just like everyone else.
  23. Congrats on a good score. I think for profile evaluation you would like to check out edulix.com forums.
