  1. Don't you think it is quite early to expect a reply from them for fall 2008? I think the deadline for application is 1st of february. I am also applying there and yet to submit my application. Or do you know anyone who heard from them before the application deadline elapsed in previous years?
  2. GRE_KICKBOXER: Hmmm, I must commend you for your insightful analysis of issues on this forum and for your active participation. I am sure a lot of guys out there lurking on this forum have learnt a lot from your posts. Frankly speaking, do you mean people cheat on the GRE? How? It's hard for me to believe this.
  3. Rider of Rohan, Thanks for your reply and the link is very helpful. I just have to keep my fingers crossed and pray for a befitting outcome.
  4. Rezbipul, Thanks. I think I have seen that site before. The schools I applied to were not in the list. I wanted to get opinions about how much attention these top schools, preferably the first ten pay to the AWA section. Testmagicians, there must be people who are well informed on this forum. Could you drop a line or two? It will really have a great effect on someone miles away. Still waiting to hear from you.
  5. Hi everyone, I need your suggestions and ideas on this issue so as to calm my worries. Actually, I wrote the GRE and obtained scores of Quantitative, 780; Verbal, 630 and a mere 3.5 in the AWA. Well, before the AWA score was released, I contacted professors in MIT, Stanford and UT at Austin whose research areas are of interest to me and receive positive replies from them . They all strongly encouraged me to apply and asked me to include their name in my SOP so it be forwarded to them. However, now comes the AWA and it was as low as a 3.5. Please, do you guys think this might hurt my application? Besides, can you suggest where else to apply to as safety nets? I find it difficult getting that info here in Russia where I am studying and online sources are conflicting. These are stats: Undergraduate Institution: Ranked Number one in Telecommunication Engineering in Russia. GPA: 4.94/5.00 to date Research Experience: Presently, an RA in my university in collobartion with a great IT research center in Russia and conducting real time research. A publication will be made very soon. Summer 2007-- Research intern, Nortel Networks, Russia. Summer 2006-- Engineer, TvoeTV ( a Telecomms firm in Russia) Sophomore year ( Oct 2005 - May 2006)-- Research Assistant in Circuit Analysis laboratory of my University. No publication from the work but great recommendation from the professor. Dudes, please, help me out by suggesting where I can apply to with the above credential and your opinions on what effect the low AWA will have on my applications to the top schools( MIT, Stanford and UT), which I have already applied. Do I have a chance at Rensselaer Polytechnic and John Hopkins University? looking forward to seeing your replies.
  6. Hi everyone, Just sent in my applications for the fall 2008 PhD applications to MIT (EECS), MIT( AERO) and Stanford (EE). Do you think I stand a chance in these universities? Or are they too ambitious? This is how my profile looks like. GRE: Q 780 V 630 AWA 3.5 TOEFL iBT: 107 GPA: 4.94/5.00 from the top telecommunications university in Russia. Research: Summer 2007-- Research intern at Nortel Networks, Russia Summer 2006-- Research intern at an industrial firm ( not too good a research so didn't emphasize it in my application) Presently, an RA in the Communications Research lab of my University in collaboration with a famous research centre in Russia[i wonder if it is known outside] Haven't published yet. Shall get a very great reco from one of my research supervisors. The others, I can't really say. I wonder what they will write when their command of the English language is not too good. What do you think? Do I have a chance at these schools? I also applied to UT at Austin and U of Toronto. I need a safety school but all information I get here in Russia is about the top US schools. As such, I can't really make a pick. Besides, I was motivated to apply after the professors I contacted in each of these schools replied positively, encouraging me to apply. But as at then, my AWA result was not yet released. I got demoralized by it when I saw a mere 3.5. Would this low AWA have an adverse effect on me? I am, however, a bit disappointed with my GRE quant score but very satisfied with the Verbal score- I couldn't imagine getting more. Please your candid suggestions are highly solicited so I decide on where to apply. Browsing through this forum has been of immense help.
  7. @ GRE_KICKBOXER, Wow, u had 6 wrong and got a perfet score in quant? CATs can be very unpredictable and annoying. I had 8 wrong and got 760. I was wrong on the 2nd question and from there got all right until the 17th question. Failed 18-21 and got the rest right. And ETS gave me a mere 760 in quant. Well, I'm rewriting it next week on the 21st of November. Hope to pull through this time. Shall keep you guys updated.
  8. Sanjay, Thats a really tremendous score. Congrats and see me doff my hat for you. Can you send me the link to BigCD? I've scheduled my exams on the 21st of November.
  9. @ Softbaby, I think 2 months is enough to get to know all the barron's by heart. I went through all Barron's in a month, precisely 28 days. I was doing 2 WL on daily basis and I review the lists as I advance forward. I wrote down words i found difficult to remember and referred to them about three times a day and as much as i needed to. In fact, the more you review, the higher your retention rate. And make sure after studying the list, you retain over 95% of the words after goin through thme. That is, you can easily recall the meaning before moving on to the next list. Otherwise, don't think you have studied the list. You'll need a very concentrative mind when studying the list. Great application to the material is really necessary. But the keynote is: the more you review already studied list, the better you'll recollect easily. Though I claim to know Barron's by heart, you shouldn't assume I know the words in utter consummation. At least, I can say of over 95% of each WL. I hope this helps.
  10. That stuff above is Baloney: Drivel
  11. I just gave my GRE too. I agree with Sonav but I'll say the GRE quant aint that difficult as he had just said. As an Engineering undergraduate I thought I'll scale through the quant section easily. Wow, it rocked me off my feet. The questions were solvable but damn too challenging. I mean from the thrid question, I used over 3 mins just to understand what the questions meant. The word problem part is very tricky and verbiose. In the two powerprep section which I did 1-2 days before the exams, I got 800 in both. In the barron CAT, I got an 800 in the quant. And the least I had in Kaplan quant was a 790. With these scores, I just concluded the quant section was going to be breeze. So I didn't really study for it but on the real test, the question were just time-consuming.They were a lil bit difficult than PP and quite difficult to understand for me. A chinese student who sad behind me got an 800- so it's still possible to crack it. He couldn't finish both quant sections- I understand cos his command of English is not that strong and the questions were rather prolix; he guessed from 19th question in one of the sections.I guessed from the 22nd question because then I was left with a little over a min.He was averaging 770 in his practice test so you never can tell what could happen on the test. For the Verbal, the Barron's won my confidence.90% of the words were barron's.Words like rude( sec meaning), transitoriness, martinet, campanile, dote ( sec meaning= mental decline), Baloney:Drivel , Draper:Bolt, etc....I knew all the antonym and analogy questions which were quite simple to me though really unusual words. But the reading comprehension was awful. The 5th question was an RC with 110 lines.Very unfamiliar diction and grammar.Since I couldn't understand the passage not to talk of the questions, I had to guess through the 4 RC questions. I've never been good with guesses. Most likely I got all wrong.Somewhere around the 15th or 16th question, I had another RC but this time with 95 lines. Time wasn't on my side, I guessed through all 4 questions. These RC's I'm sure really lowered my verbal score. But I'm satsfied with it. I live in Russia and studied English as a second language.Though I expected more because I've got a fairly good command of the language, I feel I'm ok with the verbal score I had. Now my question is: should I rewrite the test? These are my scores: 760 Quant, 620 verbal. What are the average scores for top 10 unis in EECS? I'm preparing now for the quant as I've gotten a taste of how the test looks like. But If I can be convinced that this score is ok, maybe I'll just use it for application. I need your suggestion. I'm in my senior year and grappling with my undergraduate thesis in wireless communications and shall be applying to top 10 unis.Do I have a chance? Hope to read your views.
  12. Well, I still disagree with your approach. The question stipulated: "Q6) If it is true that x>-2 and x Just as you said, x can be any value from -1.9(9) to 6.9(9). In option B, x>-7 implies x can take on values in the stipulated range -2
  13. Why is B the answer to the last question? Why not option E? If x> -7, => x could be -6, -5 ,... but this does not fall in the given inequality range. Implying it could be true like others in some case but MUST not be always. I think that the word MUST emphasizes that the solution should hold its veracity in all circumstance. Hence, E is probably the most correct option here.
  14. Yeah...I misunderstood the question. The symbols used were confusing.KBTA is right.
