  1. I would suggest.... Eliminating the option containing being would be the last step in any SC that contains being... GMAT has started making options containing being right but making other options grammatically wrong..
  2. U need to express contrast. So yet should be used. cells beat in unison BUT adopt orientations exclusive of one another. So, contrast is required. and indicates continuity of thoughts. while indicates simultaneity...
  3. Go with singular verb when you have none. Just search None in the pdf of OG12 and you will see that GMAT uses singular verb after noun. None of my friends has been to USA -> Not a single friend of mine has been to USA. If no one has been, then how can you choose plural. Has to be Singular..HTH
  4. Pronoun they/their must refer to plural nouns. N there are no plural nouns present in the sentence. The sentence is testing ||sm... So, you can join the two parts the way you mentioned...
  5. This is not the kind of question one wil get on the GMAT... for sure!!
  6. Hi, Pls suggest me is there any alternate way to solve below problem... Victor's job is to complete series of identical jobs. If victor is supervised at work, he finishes each job three days faster than if he is unsupervised. If Victor works for 144 days and is supervised for half the time, he will finish a total of 36 jobs. How long would it take Victor to complete 10 jobs without any supervision? A. 34 B. 52 C. 60 D. 70 E. 92 What i did was....I split 144 into two parts..72 days supervised and 72 days unsupervised. Then I split 36 into two parts such that after I split 36, 72 should be divisible by the resulting two parts. So, I split 36 as 24 n 12. So, 24 parts he worked when he was supervised and 12 parts he worked when he was unsupervised. So, 3 days (72/24) he took to complete 1 job when he was supervised and 6 days (72/12) when he was unsupervised. So, to complete 10 jobs when not supervised, he would take 60 days to complete (10*6) . The correct answer is 60. But I want to know better approach..
  7. i also wonder wats wrong with E... seemingly inescapable conclusion is i think on the lines adverb + adjective + noun... I went on to select A... I think C has passive construction...
  8. We dont have subjunctive here... so i dont think that is not required. Moreover, i think we have the need as a noun and not as a verb.. experts pls confirm..
  9. A subjunctive verb should be followed by that and an infinitive verb without the word to... as there is some sort of uncertainty as to how the opposite party will react...so should can never be used.... The best possible constructions possible with the verb require are requires that/require X to Y... The first is subjunctive and the second one is the normal idiom... B maintains the subjunctive construction but unenecessarily uses passive voice construction... C/D are awkward... E follows the idiom require x to y and express the thought in the best possible way!!
  10. Just want to add a note for the otion B... B. it does not expect payments when it is The first it refers to bank...Till here we dont have any problem... But when the pronouns are repeated on GMAT, then the repeated pronoun refers to the same noun to which the earlier noun refers to...So, we have second it referring to bank...So the option says something like this: Bank does not expect payments when bank is due...And this is not surely what author intended... C corrects this problem by replacing it by they, which refer to the pronoun payments... aaadith..OA can not be E as payments to be paid is simple redundent!!
  11. I too went for B...The rule is V>A>N....GMAT prefers Verb to adverb/adjective and adverb/adjective to noun... Avoidance is a noun and avoiding is clearly a verb.. So A is gone...The construction if only because is just simple awkward... unnecessary usage of that and should in C and D.... So B...
  12. I disagree with the OA for first q... Its D..I am banking on manhattan guide though.... :)
  13. scoretop sc 11 Unlike most severance packages, which require workers to stay until the last day scheduled to collect, workers at the automobile company are eligible for its severance package even if they find a new job before they are terminated. A. the last day scheduled to collect, workers at the automobile company are eligible for its severance package. -> Comparing workers with the packages...illogical comparison... B. the last day they are scheduled to collect, workers are eligible for the automobile company’s severance package -> Comparing workers with the packages... C. their last scheduled day to collect, the automobile company offers its severance package to workers. -Comapny compared to packages... D. their last scheduled day in order to collect, the automobile company’s severance package is available to workers.-Correct comparison, their correctly referring to workers.. E. the last day that they are scheduled to collect, the automobile company’s severance package is available to workers. -> The first part the last dat that...to collect seems awkward... It seems that OA is wrong...has to be D...
  14. Another example that shows use present participle to state the result of the previous clause....This present particple modifier gives the result of the action "preheating the fuel" Also, while stating the result of the previous clause, the present participle is modifying the subject of the previous clause "A fire" To make two present participles parallel, use causing... E is just awkward...
  15. In B,C, and D the antecedent of they can be officials or drivers...so not clear... usage of as in A is wrong as we do not have any clause. as----as is a comparative conjunction and it is properly used here.... Correct idiom is Likely to X... Hence E..
  16. Just as a Note, over here it refers to Infinitive phrase 'to raise a million dollars through investments' This usage of it referring to the infinitive phrase is called placeholder it or empty it. This usage is fine..In this usage of it, one can not find the noun antecedent for it. In this case, there is no noun antecedent of it. Under any other circumstances, it can not refer to an infinitive...
  17. This q has been discussed in many threads...But i didnot find the same opinion... agreement took place in the past....so we can not use reduces... C and E are out... amount of phosphate is more clear as compared with phasphate amount...So, B is out... Now its down to A and D... A -> we should use past perfect as we want to show the time difference of two events in the past...so had been allowed along with simple past reduced is a correct.. D -> Keeping the sentence simple and assuming that dumping continues in the present requires are allowed... Someone..pls comment..
  18. I am having same doubt as finsisher...why we require those here.... pls comment!!
  19. Oh... So you want to say that they can refer to stores or sales...so A should be eliminated? I am not sure of referrent of they is problematic if thats d case, then it seems that answer is C. But as a learning from this thread, make sure that you use that after reporting verbs...
  20. Well....Its for 300 bucks n all the maths manhattan guides can be bought for 250 bucks... Its a xerox though...But who cares;) Its the oxford of the East...:p Pune, India...
  21. I am certainly not a TM guru...But I would like to post...:) I just got a manhattan sc guide that is the latest one...This guide is way different from what we have on the net(Manhattan sc guide 2005 edition)....There are so many changes and new things added in this book... This book finds very small things from OG and gives the concept in a structured format... In fact, in my city, one can have this book for mere 250 bucks... After done with this book, I would suggest to write the explanations for at leaset 150 problems from OG10.. The explaantns given in OG 10 are better than given on OG11 n verbal guide.. I am currently writing explanatns for the problems n im seeing d difference..:):) For practice...we have TM, 1000sc , kaplan 800... HTH!!
  22. Hi... you must use that before the reporting verbs such as allow, suggest, announce, report etc...So, For the second q, that is must and can not be omitted. This is given in manhattan guide...So acc to that A should be the answer and not C... For the first question.... As you are comparing the actul cost of charter vacations and the predicted cost of charter vacations, you are not creating a new copy while comparing.. For e.g.: The interest of rates of XYZ bank are lower than that of ABC bank... In this example that of ABC means interest rates of ABC. Note that the two things are not same..We have XYZ bank on side, and ABC on the other...So we are creating a new copy....In this case, usage of that is justified...You also need to make sure that while using that or those, you must modify the new copy... When you are comparing actual cost and predicted cost, you are comparing the costs of charter vacations...But you are not creating a new copy..So, over here that is not justifiable and we should use it... HTH!!
