  1. Hi all, Me and my fellow first years are struggling with a prelim question, and I'm wondering if anyone can help. Perhaps it'll be good practice for you! Assume a firm has two inputs, L and k., to produce an output q using q=f(k,l). Also assume the firm maximizes profit per unit of L Give first order conditions. Assume second order conditions are satisfied. Does firm minimize cost of producing q? Does it use more or less of efficient quantity of L? Suppose the firm operates in a competitive industry where all other firms maximize profit. Does the firm that maximizes profit per L choose inputs or output levels differently than other firms?
  2. [chagrin] I finally gave up. They'll have to accept it the way it is. It's hard to care about this final undergraduate tedium, knowing that in a few months I'm moving on.
  3. Hi all, I'm going crazy trying to set up the proper margins for my honors thesis, and I'd really appreciate any help. My needs are simple: I need 1 inch margins on top, bottom and right, and 1.5in margins on left. I tried geometry package, but when I print it out the dimensions are way off what I set. I tried manually setting everything, but still the margin are way off. argh it's driving me crazy! below is what I've tried... Thanks in advance for any help
  4. Look into stochastic calculus; levy processes. I know those are both highly applicable to financial analysis.
  5. I wanna prime my brain for the coming year with some good reading. Mine reading list is, in overly ambitious fashion: The Logic of Scientific Discover, Karl Popper Mathematics and Plausible Reasoning Volumes I and II, G. Polya An Intro to Probability Theory and its Applications Volumes I and II, Feller Probability and Measure, Patrick Billingsly
  6. my thought exactly. If you're interested in econometrics, MSU is a good place to be. I'll be there
  7. I finally decided it was easier to compile to dvi then convert the dvi to pdf using print to file. Though dvi doesn't always like jpeg. If you have jpegs it may be easier to convert the eps to pdf then compile using pdflatex.
  8. I'm 32 and just starting my phd pursuit this fall. We'll see how it goes! I wish I'd started down this path much sooner.
  9. even if that's not exactly the problem, that website looks like it'll straighten me out. Thanks
  10. Yeah, I set the terminal in gnuplot to epslatex, then output to a tex file. It creates an eps file with the lines and axes, and a tex file with the text. I then input the tex file into my main document. If I compile it to dvi, it looks great, but the dvi won't print for some reason. I get an error message if i try to print or "save as", or export to pdf. if i compile using pdflatex, the numbers show up but the axes and lines do not. Ideally I'd like to compile straight to pdf. If i compile to dvi, then convert to ps, my other graphics files (e.g., jpegs) don't convert. thanks again for the help!
  11. Hi all, So I had to make a big presentation on linear programming, and I spent hours getting nice pretty graphs in gnuplot, then transferring them to latex via epslatex terminal, only to find out in the end that they didn't survive to pdf. They worked fine in dvi, but I couldn't print the dvi file anywhere. Any suggestions on how to get nice graphs into latex? Any advice on getting gnuplots into latex files? I found a webpage that offers a 10 step process, but i'm wondering if there's something easier... Thanks, in advance, for any replies...
  12. for both Ubuntu and Kubuntu you can download disc images from which you can boot to try them out. I think the best thing to do is fiddle with both and see what you think. For me, KDE was too windows-esque. I was trying to get away from that look. I'm pretty happy now with Ubuntu. It's worth getting compiz if, like me, you really like the eye candy.
  13. Hey all, I thought some of you might be interested in this report http://snyfarvc.cc.farmingdale.edu/~gordonsp/CurrentProjects/CurriculumFoundationsDraftReport.doc The Mathematical Association of America brought together several Economists and Mathematicians to talk about how to structure a mathematics curriculum for econ students.
  14. Yeah I just saw that the other day - it's hilarious!
  15. I'm gonna bring the average up a bit - I'm 32. And I'm one of those who has a family. As far as how we can afford it - Good question! Any suggestions? I've got a daughter and a son on the way. We're gonna cram into university housing. The wife will earn some money. We'll be on the dole for a bit, with gov't supported child care, etc.
  16. I was leery of your claim that the written had more questions per minute, but you're right! Jeez, I wouldn't want to have to rush it like that. I guess they figure it's easier if you don't have to fiddle with a computer.
  17. that's not a strong LOR. It's vague, and it lacks credibility because it only talks about general strengths. A reference should know what it takes to succeed at the graduate level, and convey that the student has what it takes.
  18. If they're not familiar with graduate admissions standards, how can they write an LOR up to those standards?
  19. The book I used for GRE prep is Amazon.com: Bob Miller's Math for the GRE General Test (REA) (Test Preps): Robert Miller: Books I found it to be very helpful. It didn't emphasize test-taking strategies as much as concepts, and I preferred that. I'd say you definitely need real analysis (aka advanced calc) and calc III. The title "Matrices and Linear Equations" suggests that the course didn't go as far as typical linear algebra courses. Did you cover basis and spanning in that class? Did the Statistical Methods class use calculus? I'm assuming not, since you don't have calc III and prob stat uses multivariable calculus. A more rigorous prob stat class might be good.
  20. welcome to the club; there are a few of us here on the UT waitlist. I can tell you I'm 99% sure I'll choose MSU, so you'll have one less person on the waitlist to contend with. I think I'll wait to make up my mind until after the first round of UT fly outs.
  21. My iphone helps me compulsively check admissions websites. And since it's a pain to type on it, it prevents me from writing too many imploring emails to adcoms.
  22. the 8-10 weeks estimate is a joke. I applied a month before you, and heard back about two weeks ago. Do you mean the Msc in EME? That's what I applied to.
  23. you're interviewing them at this point, so be comfortable. That's what I figured. I don't think they'll say "you're too informal, we hereby revoke your admission offer."
