  1. way back in the early 00s when I gave the SAT Barrons used to be the best. Princeton offered tips and tricks but it was really not that helpful to me. Kaplan I did not ever try myself. Would recommend you go with Barrons. They have a good vocabulary list and their math sections offer good practice
  2. of course you can depend on many other forums but I am not sure this forum will like its members to promote other forums :)
  3. I quite agree with you and that has been the feedback from a lot of my friends that in many many cases not the best candidates get admitted to the PhD program.
  4. Thanks for the good advice mbanightrider but the thing is that I got the almost all questions right in the first 10 questions. I think i only made 1 mistake in the first 10. But i think I took quite a bit of time in the first ten questions and overall I found the questions to be of much lower difficulty than GMAT Prep 1. Anybody else has something to add?
  5. I am actually following a different strategy than the one that you mention above. I realize about myself that if I frequently try to keep track of time I get distracted. What I am doing is to see if by the 15th question in quant the time left is about 45 minutes then I am fine. Around the halfway mark that is when about 37 minutes are left I should be on the 18th question. In the last ten minutes there should be no more than 5-6 questions. Similarly for me in verbal the halfway mark is very important. But since verbal has a lot of RC questions the timing is not very uniformly distributed. It can vary quite a bit depending on where the RCs appear. I hope that helps. Regards
  6. I have been working on the GMAT Prep and so far my progress has been GMAT Prep Test 1 700 (48Q,38V). Raw scores 25/37Q,23/41V GMAT Prep Test 1 Repeat 690 (46Q,40V) Raw Scores 24/37Q, 27/41V GMAT Prep Test 2 700 (49Q, 35V) Raw Scores 29/37Q, 31/41V What can I even make out of these scores? I am not sure why the scores are not improving even though my hit rate has been going up??? ramzrambo can you shed any light? I have my GMAT coming up next week. Thanks
  7. Yes it would be very beneficial if you guys could give an opinion on the above? I personally find the CRs in GMAT Prep to be much tougher than those in OG11. Have to write the GMAT next week.
  8. Hi All, I have GMAT coming up early next week. I have written the GMAT Prep thrice now. I have gotten the following scores so far. I am wuite confused as to how the scoring works. I took the GMAT Prep test 2 today. I managed to score a 700 again. I only managed to get a total of 10 questions wrong on the verbal today but still only managed a 35. My scores so far have been GMAT Prep Test 1 700 (48Q,38V). Raw scores 25/37Q,23/41V GMAT Prep Test 1 Repeat 690 (46Q,40V) Raw Scores 24/37Q, 27/41V GMAT Prep Test 2 700 (49Q, 35V) Raw Scores 29/37Q, 31/41V Ther performance has been a bit erratic but the scoring has been even worse. What can I even make out of these scores? The only thing that I think I should take out of it is that previously a vast majority of my SCs were wrong and very few of CR and SCs were wrong. In this latest test only 2 SCs were wrong and the remaining were all CRs and RCs. Does anybody else have an idea as to why the verbal score can be so low even when getting only 10 mistakes out of 41? The first time I wrote the GMAT Prep test 1 it had gotten 18 mistakes. I will be grateful for your replies. Thanks
  9. Congratulations on a great score. Can you please tell whether the difficulty level of the SCs on the real GMAT was comparable to the GMAT Prep questions? I personally find the GMAT Prep SCs quite difficult compared to the ones in the OG. Thanks
  10. I plan to write the GMAT on the 15th of December. Last one week of prep left. Does anybody over here know whether the answer to the SETS problems for quant have the correct answer choices listed or not? I get the feeling that some of the problems have been given wrong answer choices. Thanks
  11. Hi Velman, What would u suggest i do after finishing both OGs for quant? Although quant is my strong point but I find a lot of the questions in the GMAT quite challenging. I am the Q48 type. How do you suggest I might improve over that considering that only 1 week is left for me between now and G-DAy. Also can you please suggest how to take the prep through the last week on the whole??? I had given the GMAT Prep software test I way back in Mid-October (had a 700 back then). That was when I had just started prep. Now I am about to conclude my prep so I will give the GMAT Prep II some time soon. I also have a problem with handling pressure in tests I think. How do you suggest I might improve on taking pressure?? I will be looking forward to your reply P.S I will have 3 days off in the coming week and 2 days of work in it. What do you suggest for me. Thanks

  13. I have studied from both the materials actually and frankly OG10 has a lot more questions to practice than the OG11. However for SCs the OG11 has much clearer and concise explanations compared to OG10. Also a lot of the quant questions on the OG11 are repeats from the OG10. I suggest you do buy the OG10 if you want to have good quant practice. I have not studied RCs from OG10 or 11 but the CR section also seems better in the OG10. I would recommend OG10 to you I hope this helps
  14. It is very interesting to read your profile. I know for a fact that business schools do look for diversity in their classes but they don't look for diversity just for the sake of diversity. You need to be exceptional at what you do and then be able to prove to the admissions committee at Harvard that you will be a good choice as well as contribute significantly to the knowledge in class. Also in a class with average GMAT scores crossing the 700 mark it might be worthwhile to put in some extra effort on that part of your app. However it is your choice. Also I am wondering whether you are applying to the regular MBA program or the executive MBA program? Your work experience suggests that you are better suited to the executive MBA program. 12 years of work experience is a lot of experience. Thirdly, you will be competing with hundreds of other very very talented Indians so you really will have to stand out against them. This is not to discourage you but to get you to focus even more in making your application even stronger. I wish you all the Best.
  15. congratulations on a very nice score. I am writing my GMAT in about a week and a half's time. Can you please suggest what I should be doing in the last week for quant? Thanks
  16. very nice de-brief......and congratulations on a wonderful score.
  17. The solution is B IMO. ....x/lxl ....cross multiplying x/x .... 1 -1 From the choices given above B fits the bill. I hope that helps. Regards
  18. wow man......genius_in_the_gene....you look GMAT questions look so easy and the makers of GMAT quant questions kindergarten instructors :)........ U R COOL
  19. is the answer D ???? If yes then it is a simple ratio is it?
  20. Hey I think I have the solution to it. This question is a bit tricky. Setting up the equation is pretty simple but getting the final answer is a bit tricky. For plan A a consumer is charged $0.6 + 0.06x for x minutes above the first seven minutes. For plan B it is 0.08x for x minutes of talking. It must be noted that the consumer in plan B must incure the cost of the first 7 minutes in any case so the call should be at least 7 minutes to have a correct comparision of both the plans. So to find total time for call B we should have 7 + the number of minutes over 7 which is x. To get a call where both the costs are equal we equate the two. 0.6 + 0.06x = 0.08(7+x) Solving for x gives us x = 2. BUT it is important to note that call should be at least 9 (7+2) minutes for us to have the cost of both equal. I hope I have been able to explain you guys.
  21. The area of the metal frame can be found by first calculating the area of the medallion + the metal frame and then subtracting the medallion area from it. Therefore we have Area of Medallion + Metal frame = pi(r+s)^2 Area of Medallion= piĀ®^2 Subtracting them = pi( r^2 + 2rs +s^2 - r^2) = pi(2rs + s^2) = pi*s*(2r+s) I hope I am able to explain it to you.
  22. congratulations on a wonderful score and a very nice and brief de-brief.
  23. Not bad at all.....690 is good enough for the places that you are aiming for. NUS has an average score of about 660 or 670 I think.
  24. Hmmm.....if you are applying to these places then I think definitely you should write the GMAT once again. It is absolutely essential that you get about 700 at least if you are applying to places like Harvard. Keep working on your application too since your essays WILL count for a lot.
