Contacting the Professors, is it invalid in econ PhD applying?
Lokayot replied to ryanmagic's topic in PhD in Economics
One of my professors at UBC randomly told me that she doesn't even open the email if she realizes it is a request like this/feigning interest to get in. All universities have their admission system and faculty from good schools don't approve of this method (from what I have seen). -
I screwed up my GRE first time since I didn't study for it 4 days until before the exam. I got 710 in quant and 560 in verbal. I retook it later on and again ended up doing the same mistake i.e. didn't study until 3 days before (sigh..I know - it was a last minute decision to register). Anyway, I focused on quant more this time and got 770, but my verbal dropped to 510. I was an international student at UBC and I still got into their masters (I got the partial tuition waiver and recently was awarded a TA'ship too) . It was not required of me to send the score anyway, so maybe they didn't care about my GRE. But at any rate, I think for the masters program at UBC at least, you shouldn't be too worried. From what I have seen, UBC cares a lot more about the math background than anything else (and my math was worse than yours - I even had a B- in Calc 3 in my first semester).

Face to face is better I think, you would want to give them a chance to back out. A lukewarm LOR will hurt you quite a bit. Just ask them what range of schools they think you should apply to, that will give you an idea about what they think of you. Then ask them whether they might be interested in writing a LOR.

Should I retake GRE? (another form of "Evaluate me")

Seeking advice/suggestions on the universities to apply for...
Lokayot replied to diesel's topic in PhD in Economics
Tinbergen is a good university nonetheless, you should apply there. However, Oxford and Cambridge don't have good funding either (living cost is high too), at least at the masters level from what I know. -

Course selection Measure-based Probability vs Econometrics
Lokayot replied to ljh96251's topic in PhD in Economics
Since your math grades are poorer than what you think you are capable of, I would go with grad probability. You are taking grad econ anyway, I think grad math would give a very good signal. It is up to you though, take whichever one you are comfortable with. As I said before, both are really good and you can't make a bad choice. What do you think of grad real analysis? That will also be an excellent choice. -
Course selection Measure-based Probability vs Econometrics

I don't think you can go wrong with either of those. Are you taking any other grad level economics courses? If not, I would lean towards PhD-Econometrics. -
He is an international student, he can't take a loan. If he can pay out of his pocket, that would be good. A Queens degree will go further than that from a second tier uni.

UofT guarantees funding if you can get into the doctoral stream M.A

If you intend to pursue grad studies in economics, I have the impression than Canadian masters programs are better suited for this purpose. US masters helps professionals more than aspiring econ phD students. With that result, you should apply to UBC, UofT, Queens etc. It is also cheaper to study in Canada and there is funding available.

You have a decent profile, I wouldn't be surprised if you got into a few top 10 schools (Harvard seems unlikely but you never know). Here is the econphd ranking for development economics: Rankings: Trade & Development I don't know what you mean by flexible, but if you are interested in going to the private sector, you can apply to the econ phd programs at business schools.

Economics related topic for History of Mathematics course... HELP!
Lokayot replied to Harry Lime's topic in PhD in Economics
Maybe how development of a particular field in mathematics affected theories of a related field in economics? I apologize for not being specific, I am entering my third year and haven't done much of econ or math. -
*URGENT*: ETS always sends average scores !!!!
Lokayot replied to qwarentine's topic in Graduate Admissions
They send the scores of all the tests you have taken in the past 5 years, not the average. -
For advice on what math course to take, search this forum.

errmm..I would just suggest that you take lots and lots of math and get into the honours stream. Reading journal articles is not at all important at this level (you will read a few in your final years). Besides, if you still want to read those papers, your school library should have subscription to those.

How do we organize the materials for application? Things to prepare?
Lokayot replied to Danini's topic in PhD in Economics
You should check the website of the departments concerned. Different schools have different requirements. About organization, I don't have much of a clue, but I hardly believe that it matters. -

Did you check the econphd rankings? (just google it) -

Advanced Calc II will be the best in my opinion, but take it only if you think you can do well in it. If not, I would go with the research.

Ditto

You disgust me. P.S. Sorry TM folks, had to say it. It was appalling.

I don't think OP's school works on a semester based system, that probably explains it. I am not sure though, maybe there are other reasons (e.g. strict degree requirement).
