  1. This is what I got: Dear Applicant, On behalf of the Graduate Faculty in Computer Science, I regret to inform you that your application for admission to the Ph.D. Program in Computer Science has not been approved. Since the number of students who can be accepted is limited and the overall quality of applicants is very high, it is not possible to accept many excellent students who are interested in coming to Cornell. We appreciate your interest in Cornell and wish you success in continuing your studies at another university. Sincerely, Stephen Vavasis Professor Director of Graduate Admissions
  2. dionysus, Yes, I did get the rejection from Cornell by email. So, you could cling to a hope that you might still be in their waiting list. Good luck buddy!
  3. dionysus, I got rejects from Cornell and university of Washington, Seattle by email. I called MIT and came to know that I got rejected for PhD, I forgot to check if for Masters. I should know by postal mail shortly. But thankfully I am not bothered anymore as I have admit from Berkeley for MS. They said for Masters students they decide financial aid only around the time the semester would start. That is my only concern. I did not apply for Stanford or Yale. Good luck to you and the rest of our friends still waiting. I guess the game is not over yet.
  4. basantikaveeru, Congratulations! Both Caltech and UCLA are great schools. I think you should try to visit both the schools, find out more about the research areas, profs and decide based upon them. Good luck!
  5. hendrik, Congrats! I knew you would get in a top school!! Good luck with the rest of the process.
  6. Thank you friends! I applied to it in early Dec 2003. One more stat that may be useful for future aspirants is one of my recommenders is a Berkeley PhD alumnus. As you can see my AGRE is not high, neither are my verbal, AWA, TOEFL scores - but they are too bad either I guess. I think I got it mainly because of my recommendations, SOP, relevant work experience (one patent pending invention and worked as architect for two products ground up) and Q800. I thought some more people in this forum would get it in a top school. Esp I thought hendrik would get it, looking at his awesome AGRE score. Too bad to hear that hendrik. I am sure you will get it in some other top school. Good luck! Good luck to all who are still waiting. Btw, I called MIT and found out I have been rejected. I got neither rejection nor acceptance from any other schools yet. But I am extremely happy to live with the one I got.
  7. Congrats matek! Can you tell us your stats?
  8. Thank you nhchung and bal_in_verbal! Thank you Erin for your wishes and this wonderful site. I wish I had discovered this site an year ago. I would have aced GRE, AGRE and TOEFL! nhchung, My top choice was Berkeley! That is why I am extremely happy to get an admission from there, that too as the first response. Both because it is number one in CS, esp in Systems which is my interest area and also because I enjoy the weather in the bay area where I have lived for more than five years. I hope the financial package would be good. I will keep my options open until I hear from all the schools.
  9. Congrats GooGooDoll, Cornell is really a great school!
  10. Congratulations sunxcat! sh123sh - I think your credentials are impressive. I think you should get admission in a good school with aid. Good luck!
  11. nhchung, Congratulations and all the best in all of your future endeavors! - Murboy
  12. Hi all, First I would like announce that I got acceptance for MS in CS (with intent to do PhD) at Berkeley - I had opted for specialization in distributed systems, databases, mobile computing. I got the email notification on 10th Feb. It said I should receive the financial aid details shortly by postal mail. I am yet to get it. About the official letter from the university, the email said would come after several weeks(?). It also had an invitation for the visit day on March 14-15. A day later some student coordinator called me by phone as well to tell me that I have been accepted. My credentials - 6.5 yrs of experience in bay area startups, GRE Q800, V680, AWA 5.0, TOEFL 270, TWE 5.0, AGRE CS 790, undergrad Bachelors in CS & Engg 82% (ranked 3rd) from a good college in India. I also had three strong recos, one from an industry veteran scientist with whom I worked closely in a startup that he had founded. I have applied also for CMU, MIT, Cornell, U of Wash, UT Austin, U Wisconsin, GA Tech, UCSD and UCLA. I am yet to hear from anywhere else. - Murboy
  13. Congratulations EDA! All the best in your future endeavors! Just curious, how did you get the notification - by email or postal mail?
  14. Hi, I have been working and living in the US on [H1]B visa for about five years now. I am now expecting to get an admission for Fall 2004 (haven't got one yet) for fulltime MS/PhD. I have personal savings and a property in India to back up my financial status. I am hoping to get aid in addition. I never applied for greencard before and I would be exhausting my six years [H1]B limit by Jan 2005. Now the question is should I apply for a visa status change from [H1] to F1 or should I leave the US and apply for F1 through the consulate in India? Which one is advisable? Some of my friends say if I apply in the consulate in India, the chances of rejection as more in my case on the grounds of intent to immigrate. Because I have already stayed in the US for more than five years. The financial status should not be a problem I guess, esp if I get full aid. What are the issues with applying for [H1] to F1 transfer? How long will it take? What are the grounds for rejection in it? What will happen if I do not get a result until school starts in Fall 2004? Thank you, - Murboy

    Tax exemptions?

It is that time of the year now - filing the tax returns. Does anyone know if we can claim tax exemptions for all the expenditures related to school applications. How about the following types of exemptions? - Application fee paid for each school application - Fee paid for the standardised exams (GRE, etc). - Fee paid for reporting scores of standardised exams. - Mailing costs for sending applications, etc. - Exam study materials like books, CDs, software, etc. - Any courses undertaken for exams. What should be an acceptable form of proof? Any other details? I know this topic is not exactly about tests, but I believe the information we may gather here would be very useful for all who are preparing while working. Thank you, Murboy
