  1. Thnx CalmLogic and Ancalagon !! I should certainly work on my reserach profile. By the way, what r my chances for NYU ?
  2. Hi CalmLogic and everyone, please evaluate my profile. I am double major in Maths and Computer science from a small state university in Oklahoma. I want to apply for PHD in computer science for Fall 2009. My profile is as follows: GRE (1460 790 Q 670 V) (took last month) GPA in Maths and computer science combined is 3.97 at a scale of 4. My math GPA alone is 4.0 . Computer science alone should be close to 3.95. This GPA is till 6th semester, I m still going to college and will graduate in May 2009. I am expecting to graduate with 3.98 GPA . Did internship in a small software firm for 1.5 years. Worked as Maths tutor and grader in the university. Was awarded computer science scholarship for excellence in 2007-2008. I was elected as President of Maths club in my university for this year. I worked as treasurer of Maths club for last year. I participated in National model united nations conference in New York in UN general assembly. My delegation represented Eritrea there. I was awarded a grade of A for my work. I participated in a similar conference in St Louis in 2007. This conference was not related to computer science at all. Most of the participants were political science and international relations major, but I did it just because of my intereset in these areas. Currently working part time as web developer for business department of my university. I dont have any paper published. I am thinking of applying to following universities: University of Washington ,Seattle University of Columbia University of Wisconsin, Madison University of Maryland University of Texas, Austin University of Michigan, Ann Arbor University of California, LA Stanford Harvard Oregon state University What are my chances of getting into these universities with funding? Please suggest me other universities where I have chance of getting funded. My professors are very impressed with me and will hopefully write good recommendation for me. Any suggestion will be appreciated.
  3. For first question, Median is 50% only in normal distribution. Since the above distribution is not normal , we pickup the middle term .
  4. dome.gears, but 17.3 is the middle term in the given distribution.
  5. ecartman is right about question 3. square of 6 is 36 but square of -6 is also 36. You have to count negative even integers too. So the answer should be 8.
  6. First question ,Since its not mentioned that its a normal distribution , the median of the data should be the middle term, 17.3 I don't understand the second question.
  7. Congrats Organized !! Thats a good score. Its hard to tell what kind ot universities you can get into. A lot depends on your GPA and other stuff. But provided your GPA and everything is fine. You should be able to get into a good university. Your verbal score is very good. You don't need more than that. While your quant score is good, improving it by 20-30 points will certainly boost your chances of securing admission in top schools. How much did u score in powerprep in quant ? Do you think quant in actual exam was harder than powerprep ?
  8. aim1600, congrats man. u did good!!
  9. Arifa , your maths score is good. You might have gotten really unluck for the verba part. But i m sure you can improve ur verbal score considering you score 500 in your previous attemp and scored above 460 in all of your practice tests. Sometimes bad things happen to us over which we dont have any control. I suggest u take the GRE again. I m sure u will improve this time.
  10. moodaeng , can u plz explain question 11 and 16 ?
  11. Hey, science420 , Bad score in gre quant doesnt mean that u arent cut out for engineering. questions in the GRE can b tricky. Some of the brightest maths and physics majors I know ended up scoring around 650 in the GRE simply because they didnt understand the test very well and didnt take the time to prepare enough. Despite their bad score in quants all of them r doing masters in engineering courses. This score might not get u in top schools but there r plenty of schools out there who will take u. If u r in the US, u should make a trip to some schools of ur choice and meet the professors whose research work interests u. This might help . But dont bother if u dont have enough time. Take the GRE again if u want but there is no reason to believe that u cant get into any engineering school. Gud luck with everything !

e.cartman , why cant mode for the first question be {1,2,3,4,5,6} ?
  13. It depends on the university u want 2 apply to. I will say you have a good score considering u r not gonna apply to top 10 schools. Two of my friends got to University of Cincinnati for PHD in nuclear physics with funding, with a GRE score of close to 1130, Quan around 670 and verbal 460. Their GPA was around 3.6. One of my friend got into University of Oklahoma for petroleum engineering with GRE score of 1100 Quant 650 and verbal 450. His GPA was 3.8. University of Oklahoma is very gud for petroleum engineering. Dont b discouraged by the high scores of ppl in this forum. In my college, ppl just study for a day or two and take this test and end up getting lower than wht u have got. still they make it to masters in reputable universities. One of my friend scored 760 on quant and 460 on verbal and got into University of Michigan for PHD in nuclear engineering which is ranked above MIT for this program. His gpa was 3.74. He scored just 670 on quant and 450 in verbal when he took the GRE for the first time. But then he studied a little bit and improved his quant score alot. U have 700 in quant. A lot of universities excpect u to get around 700 even for engineering programs. So u r fine.Work on your SOP and LOR. I m sure t u will get into ur desired program. Best of luck with everything.
