  1. the acemoglu book is pretty good, it used to be free on the internet but now that it is in print i cant find it anywhere. does anyone have a copy?
  2. take the amount that they tell you to study a week for economics (usually around 40) and divide it by about 10
  3. i've been using the economics forum a little bit for discussing economics rather than the job market, its quite useful and can be found here. anyone else on there yet? Economics Forum - Economics Forum, Blogs, Resources and Videos
  4. no "do not let them eat cake" might more be appropriate for a modern development economist
  5. are you sure its wise to provide such high grade intelligence to the jealous european universities?
  6. i would like to see an empirical analysis of the contributions that the advancements of economics has made. with science this is much easier, light bulb, telephone, energy, etc ;
  7. you can't go wrong with wooldridge, snap it up. someone should write an econometrics textbook thats more like a recipe cookbook that a dense textbook. keep it practical!
  8. your behavior is not rational, consider your opportunity cost: http://www.beawesomeinstead.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/unemployment.jpg
  9. don't hate the player, hate the game
  10. working on evaluations in JPAL sounds like an excellent job for economists - both interesting and would look good on the CV, especially if you go on to apply for a development related job.
  11. yeah its quite uncommon that you will get to work alongside an economics professor at the master's or undergraduate level in the UK. the exception to this is if one of your modules is a research project, for example Warwick University have a research module at the undergraduate level. This gives the chance to be guided by an economics professor, and if your work is exceptional they will work with you to make it into a journal submission hope this helps
  12. anyone else banging their head against the wall on this?
  13. it would be nice to see a paper that demonstrates that increased complexity of mathematics has turned out more useful results. the most recent models of the economy were very useful, until we realised that we left out the banking sector!
  14. hopefully the demand for economists will display some sort of counter-cyclicality
  15. yeah i mean the brand value of your degree will matter probably for your first 5 years on the job market, after that its pretty much what you've done with your professional career. if the job market is slumping for the next 2 years, its going to knock off quite a bit off your lifetime brand value of the LSE degree. that said you will still be better positioned than most of the competition, and so well prepared for this. the LSE degree costs £16,000 ; whilst Nottingham is about £4,000. Nottingham is about equal in the UK rankings for economics, but the LSE degree buys you brand value and international reputation
  16. Having done the LSE MSc Economics, I would not recommend it. They treat you like battery farm chickens. Debateable whether you graduate with a better knowledge of economics as well given the syllabus
  17. I've seen a lot of hiring of economists going on in the public sector. Hopefully they are realising how important economists are to scrutinise policy.
