  2. one of my economics profs had a different suggestion a couple of weeks back...with the recession and the emergence of the financial sector as an highly interlinked market on its own (which becomes clearer day by day with present economic conditions!!!)...the whole macro and policy field has been thrown open with probable changes to existing theories to incorporate the important influence of this sector or market (loosely using both terms!!!)...any views???

  13. I am in touch with a few senior students at the University to get the precise research interests of Professors. I have not been in touch with any professor apart from one from whom I myself got a mail. But yes it is better to start discussing with the Profs if you have multiple university options for better decision.:hmm:
  14. Institution: UCLA Program: Economics PhD Decision: Rejected Notification date: 3/5 Notified through: E-mail Comments: Here goes out the only West Coast program I had applied to :)
  15. there is quite a difference between what you suggest in theory and what gets implemented..afterall its the government which has to implement it...even in one of my case studies published I found how a Project Officer (not Indian but from EU) working for a famous multinational development organization was using the Indian Government's money (millions) for his pet projects while those were not at all viable...and internally all Development workers talk in hushed tones how this is not an isolated incident...Development Theories on a macro level and implementation on micro level produces different results!!!...dude u need to get some development experience to understand the realities of working style of Development Organizations in Developing Countries and the complexity of governments which work with these organizations :)
  16. i totally agree with rationalexpectations...it gives a kind of high :) while working in the field...i worked with UNICEF for 3 months as an intern in india and i discussed and collected data ranging from villagers and others from marginalized communities to senior government officials...sitting in huts to sitting in huge mansions!!!!...i dont know how practical our field work for research could be in Development Economics :hmm:...but working for development organizations is definitely cool...and papers get published also ...i got one with so much of just travelling around ;)

  20. One of my friends would be applying for PhD in Information Systems for fall '10. She is an engineer with 4 years of IT experience in a reputed MNC. It would be really helpful if someone can answer a couple of questions: 1. Is GRE or GMAT appropriate for PhD in Management of Information Systems. I used my GRE for Econ at even B schools, but am not sure about information systems. Which is more acceptable? 2. Is there any site for the rankings of program apart from US News and FT rankings for general MBA and PhD?
  21. hmmm...a general question...who has applied for Wharton : Applied Econ just because they received a promo mail from the department somewhere in november???... i did :hmm: Somehow now after the above discussions I feel if a department is sending promo mails then something is wrong? prospects are not good or what???...any views... :( mail copied below: We obtained your contact information through the Educational Testing Service (ETS) who helped us identified promising candidates interested in pursuing a PhD in economics or a related applied economics field. Toward that end, we would like to invite you to apply for our highly competitive Doctoral Program in Applied Economics at The Wharton School, located at The University of Pennsylvania. Wharton's PhD program in Applied Economics gives students the tools and training to get jobs in applied-economics positions in economics departments, business schools, and public policy programs. Our program is designed to prepare students to conduct rigorous research. Students take core courses in microeconomic theory and quantitative methods. Students also take two major field concentrations designed to give them the tools necessary to conduct quality research in a core economic discipline. Drawing on a large faculty of applied economists across multiple Wharton departments and the Law School, the Applied Economics program allows specialization in a number of areas, including: * Behavioral Economics * Economics of Risk Management * Industrial Economics and Business Regulation * Public Economics and Political Economy * Urban Economics and Real Estate Students can also form a second major using courses offered by the Penn Economics Department, including macroeconomics and international economics. Additional finance courses can be taken from the Finance Department. Our Fellowship offers full tuition and fees along with a stipend of $23,000 per year to highly qualified candidates whose goal is to become a leading applied economics researcher. An undergraduate education in economics and mathematics provides an excellent foundation for doctoral studies in interested in Applied Economics. Applications are due by December 15, 2008. Additional information on our program is available online at: Wharton Doctoral Programs: Applied Economics Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. Sincerely,
  22. For the Cornell - Applied Economics, "Most decisions should be made within the next 3-4 weeks." is what I got the answer from the Graduate Office...for the others who have applied in that field...

  24. hey...has anyone heard from their Economic and Public Policy program (Tepper + Heinz school joint)???
  25. hmmm...nice idea...will do that!!! :) in the meantime I checked a couple of sites UPenn mentioned "Although no reporting or withholding is required for U.S. students, the students must report and pay federal income tax on any payments in excess of tuition, fees, books, and certain other expenses. Further, there are special rules for international students. All Educational Fellowship grants to international students must be reported on IRS Form 1042S. If the student is not from a tax treaty country, then federal income tax must be withheld from the stipend allowance at 14%. (In my case, US India Tax Treaty gives one Personal Exemption of $3100 from taxable Income and some standard Exemption. This is important otherwise University would start deducting 14% straightway!!! :D)Those students from tax treaty countries that have a provision for scholarships and fellowships, may claim exemption from withholding by completing Form W-8BEN. For information on international students, please consult the Foreign Student Tax Guide." Penn: Office of the Comptroller and also some Tax Standards are mentioned here for International Students Financial Information for Graduate Students at MTU
