  14. TOPIC: ISSUE55 - "Competition for high grades seriously limits the quality of learning at all levels of education." WORDS: 461 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2009-2-25 23:34:04 Does the competition for high grades limit the quality of learning? I think that the speaker's assertion has merits in some occations. Nevertheless, a grading system is necessary for education as it has advantages for evaluating students' achievement in learning. I concede that competition for high grades limit the quality of learning. The objective of education is to inform student s with knowledge and to foster the students' creativity and ability of critical thinking. The grading system only reflects the achievement of students' theory. Those who obtain high grades in exams are not necessarily excellent students; they might lack other important skills such as communication skills and the ability for researching. In other words, a student who has low grade in university will not necessarily performs badly in occupation. A good example is the greatest inventor, Thomas Edison. Edison had received formal school education for only three months because he often had a low score in exams, however, which do not obstacle his way to success. Additionally, an undue competition for high grades would be negative or even harmful for students. An undue competion will give students a wrong concept that high grade is the only symbol of good achievement. The loser who had a low grade may loose her or his confidence, which is harmful to student's mental health. Finally, score of examination cannot evaluate the student's moral level. To establish an appreciate level standard is also essential for students. Due to the fact that the grading system in school cannot evaluate the students' moral level, those who had high scores will not be accepted by society if one's moral level is low. Thus, one should not judge a student by the grades obtained in exams. However, the score system has its merits to objectively evaluate a student's achievement of learning, to certain degree. Score system is of use when evaluates the students' acchievement in gainning knowledge. Another fact we cannot deny is that the grades obtained by students more or less determinates wether one can access a higher education, for example, a postgraduate education. Although the competition for high grades has negative influance on students' studying, we cannot deny the merits of the grading system which has existed in area of education for hundreds of years. To sum up, I fundamentally agree with the speaker as grade cannot be representive of students' s achievment in some occasions. And an undue competion for high grades may ingringe the students' mental health. However, we should also accept the merits of grading system as which can evaluate a student's achievement of learning to certain degree. In other words, grating system perhaps is one of the only a few method to determinate weather a candidate can obtain the "visa" to a higher education. TOPIC: ARGUMENT201 - The citizens of Forsythe have adopted healthier lifestyles. Their responses to a recent survey show that in their eating habits they conform more closely to government nutritional recommendations than they did ten years ago. Furthermore, there has been a fourfold increase in sales of food products containing kiran, a substance that a scientific study has shown reduces cholesterol. This trend is also evident in reduced sales of sulia, a food that few of the healthiest citizens regularly eat. WORDS: 382 TIME: 00:30:00 DATE: 2009-2-25 23:34:04 The author claims that the citizens of Forsythe(FE) have adopted healthier lifestyles. To support his conclusion, the author claims that the citizens of FE conform more closely to government nutritional recommendation based on a survey. The author also claims that the sales of food products containing kiran increase, ans that the sales of sulia decreased. However, the author's argument flaws in some critical aspects. Firstly, the surey that indicates that the citizens of FE conform more closely to government nutritional recommendation is unpersuasive. Unless the author offers the information about the number of people surveyed and the method the surveyor used and proves that the respondents in the surey can be representive to all the citizens in FE, the author's conclusion cannot convince me. Secondly, the author claims that the sales of food products containing kiran increase and that a scientific study has shown reduces cholesterol in kiran. However, cholesterol is not the only substance which may harm human's health. Furthermore, perhaps some other products of food, were frequently eaten by citizens in FE, also contain cholesterol. Without rulling out these possibilities the author's conclusion that citizens in FE have good eating habits cannot convince me. Finally, the author claims that the citizens in FE have good eating habits because the sales of sulia were reduced. However, that is not necessarily the case. The fact that sulia is a food that few of the healthisest citizens regularly east does not necessarily mean that sulia contains harmful sustances for human's health. Unless the author prove that sulia is harmful to human's health, his conclusion cannot convince me. Finally, even if the citizens in FE have a health eating habits, the author unfairly assummes that they also have a healthy lifesyle. However, that is not necessarily the case. Other factors, such as the enviroment in FE, may also influnce the To sum up, the author's argument has several logical flaws which render it unpersuasive. To better support his conclusion, the author should offer detals about the survey and prove that the citizens of FE conform more closely to government nutritional recommendation. The author also should rull out the possibility that some other products of food, were frequently eaten by citizens in FE, also contain cholesterol, and proves that sulia is harmful to human's health.
  15. TOPIC: ISSUE95 - "People work more productively in teams than individually. Teamwork requires cooperation, which motivates people much more than individual competition does." WORDS: 440 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2009-2-26 14:05:55 Competition and cooperation, which is more important? I think that this issue is a mixed one though the speaker agree that cooperation is more important. Consider the area of science. In the realm of science, the sense of competition can imotivates people to reachi a higher objective. If an engineer does his design under the pressure of competition, he would realize that his design will not be accepted by athority if th design is not outstanding compared with other engineers' desgin. In other hand, cooperation is also improtant. For example, a scientific research commomly needs perfect cooperation. The scientists in different subjects would design different parts of the large researching project to achieve the same goal. Consider the space techology. In a large space program, it needs different countries to complete different componets of the whole project--the States designs the space ship, Russia designs the space mother ship and Japan designs the eleectronic elements. Also consider realm of business. A good business man always have a sence of competition. One should no further look at the Empire of Microsoft. The process for Microsoft's becoming outstanding among other software companies is a process of competition. In other words, competition between the companies is also benefit for consummers as an natural "evolution" in the business market help consummers choose the best comodities and services. However, we cannot the deny the importance of sence of cooperation. Microsoft's success is not only the sccusess of Bill Gates; millions of workers and think tanks also contribute to Bill Gates' large project. However, the situation changes when it comes to the area of arts. In my opinion, competition plays a less inportant role in the area of arts. The sea of arts is infinite in which artists design different works to meet different aethetic standads. A bad painting in classical style will not necessarily be rated as bad in other aethetic standards; it is not necessary for a wide artist to compare one's work to others'. In other hand, cooperation may be much important in some occassions. For example, in a large scale of dance it needs different dancers to cooperate to give a good perfomance. Another example is symphony. In a concert of symphony, different instrumentists will play different instruments to give an sence of harmony to the audiances. To sum up, when it comes to the area of science and of business, both competition and cooperation are important for people's outstanding performances. However, in the area of arts, competion plays a less important role because a bad work in in one aethetic will not necessarily be rated as also bad in other aethetic aspectives. I finished this essay in 45 minutes. Thanks. =)
