  6. hi vuhl, i got your point, but I am unable to understand the explanation. in fact I want to know the solution of this ques. if u can explain it to me , I will be grateful. I m writin GRE in few days.. so please help. thanx. Hi Ritum. You are not the only one that clicked on the link at a bad time:) I will send the files to you through email then. OG stands for Official Guide, released by ETS, containing 7 real past GRE paper tests. I highly recommend this book even if you are to take computer-based tests. For my case, my scores of the paper tests included in [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] are truly compatible with my final score in the real computer test with Q usually 800 and V anything between 740-780. However, I tried [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] tests only after I had done the first round with all relevant word lists.

  8. The following appeared in a letter to the editor of a local newspaper from a citizen of the state of Impecunia. "Two years ago our neighboring state, Lucria, began a state lottery to supplement tax revenues for education and public health. Today, Lucria spends more per pupil than we do, and Lucria's public health program treats far more people than our state's program does. If we were to establish a state lottery like the one in Lucria, the profits could be used to improve our educational system and public health program. The new lottery would doubtless be successful, because a survey conducted in our capital city concludes that citizens of Impecunia already spend an average of $50 per person per year on gambling." -------------------------------------------------------------------- The argument seems to be plausible in first look. Afterall, education and public health are the most important concern of any governmemt. But depending on the evidnces provided,it cannot be asserted that establishing a state lottery in Impecunia(Im) like the one in Lucria(Lu) will bring the same benificial effects. In the first place, it is said that Lu began a state lottery, so that tax revenues can be used for education and public health. Then it is said that, Lu spends more money on public health and education as compared to Im. But no evidence is given that whether the lottery is providing sufficient revenue or not. It is not clearly stated that the money Lu spending on people health and education comes from the lottery. It is entirely possible that Lu government is willing to improve education and public health in state and many other reformation processes to attain this are taking place simultanuously. In this case, it is possible that the other ventures are making profit and the revenue generated is being used for education and public health, even if the lottery business is not makng any profit. In this situation, the assumption that establishing lottery will bring the same success to the state is fallacious. Even if we agree with the fact that Lu is making profit from the lottery business, it can not be inferred that the lottery business will be profitable in Im as well. As it is stated in the argument that a survey conducted in the capital city informs that people are spending $50 per person per year. Now, many dubious assumption has been made based on this survey. First of all, it is said that survey was conducted in the capital city. It is very clear that what people in one city do, can not reflect the wishes of an entire state. If the people in other parts of the state are not willing to pay for lottery then this idea of establishing a lottery will not be fruitful.Hence before making any decision like this, the accurate survey of entire state is needed. On the other hand the result of survey of the capital city says that people spend $50 per person per year. Here two points are worth considering. It is not stated that how many people have been surveyed. What percent of the entire population of the city has been surveyed. To be agree with the result of the survey it is entirely necessary. Even if we consider the result of the survey to be true, it is not clear that whether the people will spend money in the state owned lottery. Common sense says that generally people spend money in lottery when they visit to some places like LAS VEGAS. If this is the case then stae established lottery will not make profit in the capital city as well. Hence the survey hsould explain the fact that how people are spending money on lottery. Whether they will be spending on the state owned lottery or not. There is one more point worth considering here, government use people money for the welfare of people. Now spending too much on lottery is not a very good habit. It can easily be converted into a detrimental addiction and in this case, although government is trying to help people, this can be severely harmful for them. In conclusion, the facts on which the argument is based, doesnot provide sufficient and convincing evidences to support the argument. IT should be explained clearly that the lottery in Lu is making sufficient and desired profit. Further, more accurate survey is required to prove that people will be spending money on state owned lottery throughout the state and that government will take approprite measures to avoid the detrimental effects of lottery on people.
  9. Someone has very correctly said that competition brings the best out of us, but if competition is not healthy then it can bring the beast out of us. We need to learn how to make competition healthy, that is, how to bahave properly with the people we are competing with, how to accept failure with courage and smile and how to keep trying even after coninuous failure. But on the whole , even if there are many harmful effects of competition on our society, it has many more benificial effects, when compared. The most important benifit of competition is that it brings the BEST out of us. It is competition which compels and drives us to do things that seem to be impossible otherwise. This very thing ca be explained by examining closely to different sports and atheletic events. The amazing records and performances which we see on the playground is certainly an outcome of competition . Assume the situation in schools and colleges where there is no competition. Its very obvious to conclude that average performance of students will decline .We all know that we need certain restrictions to accomplish the work in desired manner, especially when we are not grown up completely. So if there are no tests, no assignments in schools then certainly students will pay less attention to study. It is the desire and passion to prove oneself and excel our peers which drive a person to put his best efforts in his endeavors and certainly it improves the quality of work accomplished. Market and economy is one of the fields where benefit of competition is clearly visible. It is the immense competition between rival companies which provides the consumer the best possible products at most reasonable prices. This fact can be further explained by a simple example. Let us consider that there is only one company which is making breakfast cereals. Now, the customer is bound to buy the product at whatever price it is available. But if some other company starts making the same product, to attract customers, certainly it will try to improve the quality or to reduce the price or provide costomers some other attractive offers. Ultimately, competition in the market is beneficial for customers. Similarly, these companies are getting benefit of competition between the companies which are providing raw materials to them.Hence we can say it is mutually benificial. Although competition has many good effects on entire society, it is detrimental for all of us if we do not handle it cautiously and wisely. Competition encourages us to do our best but, what if we are not able to do better than the person or group we are competiting with? Here comes the most detimental effect of competition. Many psychological disorders are result of unhealthy competition. In today's world anxiety, hypertension, high blood pressure are very cmmon among people. These are the result of high competition that every individual faces in every aspect of life. At the same time many people cannot handle the failure properly. They want to win, at any cost and by any means no matter it is fair or not. But as every coin has two sides, so is the case with competitin. As long as we are able to maintain a healthy competition in our society we ca suppress it's detrimental effects. We need to understand the value of competition and we need to instill the art of making it healthy in people right from childhood to diminish the bad effect of it. In sum, even with all the benificial aspects of competition, it can be proved detrimental for our society if we dont learn to make a competition healthy. But when analyzed, even in the present state, competition has more benificial effectthan detrimental.

"The variable x is normally distributed. The values of x at the 45th, the 15th, and the kth percentiles of the distribution are 550, 350, and 450, respectively." I got the wrong answer because I didn't understand the question correctly." pls help me out... thanx
