I toggled with some of the concerns discussed here about UCSD being a new Business PhD program but in the end, a lot of the benefits I saw in the program and its fit with my interests definitely outweighed the concerns .. They were very thorough in their evaluation of me which definitely made me more confident that they also believe it is a good fit.
so, I'm headed to Rady this fall .. The faculty assured me of a strong connection with the econ department.. I'm not into asset pricing per se, but Timmerman did come over from the Econ department...
I'm not sure why people put this imaginary ceiling in their minds between Econ and business schools ... While certainly you might not get an advisor from the other school as your primary advisor, over the course of 5 to 6 years, if somebody on the other side does work that really interests you, you'll most likely be able to meet and discuss their work with them and learn from them, even though they may not be your advisor ..
I'll try to make a detailed post of what the process was like in about 2 weeks ..
Also, I'll be part of the first cohort of students in the program -- to many here, that sounds like a disadvantage .. honestly, this could be a great advantage to you if you are willing to work hard while in the program and do good research .. The department has a strong incentive to place you well and get their program off to a good start ... In case any of you have offers from them and still on the fence, I hope you come and join me there .. It'll be cool to try to get the program off to a fast start by doing well and placing at a top university in 5 years !
