  1. Does any of the two offers have funding?
  2. reminds me of one of Southpark episodes... "they took our jerbs"
  3. "Economics is everywhere" by Hammermesh
  4. You can do it using Google Maps. It won't take much time if you confine the number of countries to 50, for example.
  5. You are 18 yo and you have MPhil?
  6. From what I've observed from investigating current students' CVs, if you are among the top students of your class in SFU, you have a good chance of getting admitted to the top 4 econ PhD programs in Canada, and in particular UBC.
  7. I also recommend applying to Waterloo. Although their program is young, they are investing a lot in professors and students to go high in rankings.
  8. Thanks for implicitly introducing Texify.. It's seems a useful online tool.
  9. They are strong in theoretical metrics. That's all I know.
  10. Something like this: When I was applying at the beginning of this cycle, I would give anything to get in your school. However, I got into a better school and now I look down upon you. So long losers!
  11. Institution: University of British Columbia Program: PhD Economics Decision: Rejected Funding: N/A Notification date: 03/29/2011 Notified through: Email Posted on GradCafe: No Comments: Emailed them several times asking for a result! Finally got an unofficial rejection and she said she will send me something more formal this week. What a pitty. I could have bought a more decent cellphone than what I own now with the $150 application fee.
  12. Missed the days when there were tens of admissions/rejections everyday.
  13. If you love economics and are motivated enough to bear the difficulties of a PhD, then go for it; however, you should consider a few points: 1. If you have been off school for too long, you may not be ready for the pressure of PhD courses. 2. By the time you finish your PhD, you will be around 40, at which it is not easy to start a career, I guess. But I'm sure there are counterexamples to this statement.
  14. In addition, if you are looking for an academic job in Canadian universities, Queen's has traditionally had an excellent placement record inside Canada.
  15. I was rejected from Lund (a second tier Swedish university), a school that I had applied as the safety of safeties. They had so few applicants that they sent an email with cc to each one of them (like 20 people) which included the list of admitted students.
  16. I think folkla is exaggerating. It's the first time I hear they are losing faculty. Even if they did, their rank wouldn't fall "like a rock". A school as prestigious and rich as USC can recover rapidly from any coup. By the way, according to this 2008 ranking (http://www.econ.uconn.edu/Ranking.pdf) they are 26 overall, 13 in IO and 14 in micro, which indicates they are very good at certain fields.
  17. They are changing everything's name to Dana and David Dornsife, the couple who gave them $200 milion. With this money, one thinks they should absorb a dozen of new faculty members, not lose some.
  18. This guy Martin Weidner, USC started econ PhD after Physics PhD. I doubt that he had passed any econ courses in between. He was also pretty successful in the job market (ended up in UCL)
  19. There are many (free) applications that convert PDF to MS WORD. You can to this conversion and then work with the WORD file which is easier to handle.
  20. Among the papers whose aim is ranking economics departments, this is the most recent, I guess: http://www.econ.uconn.edu/Ranking.pdf
