  1. Probably not the best motivation :p How much time did you put into studying?
  2. Background Info: Hey, my name's Joe. Psychology Major. Queen's University. I wrote this test in August and received the score seen in the title. Except Verbal was 560. I was shocked and devastated. I was hitting +600 in all my simulations. ETS sent me a letter 2 weeks later telling me that the algorithm f'cked up that day. I had the rare opportunity to retest my verbal section. Overall I feel pretty satisfied and happy with my results. Here are my comments: Essay 5.5 (94th percentile): - I spent the least amount of time on this; maybe 4 hours over 2 days. Didn't go outside ETS PowerPrep's essay prompts. - High school prepared me well considering I had no essay writing experience in university, save for lab reports. Math 780 (89th percentile): - I spent the most amount of time on this, practising maybe 120 hours over 60 days. I was terrified because I hadn't touched math in a long time. - Nova is the best resource out there bar none. Verbal 700 (97th,98th? percentile): - Went pretty casually with this. - Write down every unknown word you encounter and define them on cue cards. I took keywords from Kaplan and Princeton Review. General Advice - ETS PowerPrep is the best in terms of predictive validity. - Vocab is best built over time. I liked using cue cards. Best of luck fellow GRE takers!
  3. Well I guess that means you win the contest since no one else bothered to guess lol. Incidentally I did score a 780 so that was pretty spot on! :)
  4. Hi Alissa; just wanted to say thanks for all the information you put into this thread. It is truly appreciated :)
  5. ................A.................................................B.... 100,210 x 90,021............vs......... 100,021 x 90,210 I got it right but I don't like how long it took me. I ended up looking at the last 4 digits of the ultimate answer. while ignoring the first 5. Which is okay. But still. I don't like it. how would you go about it?
  6. Hey, I'm going to write my GRE tomorrow and I thought I'd post what I've gotten on simulations so far. Reason? I'm terrified. My quant score fluctuates on such a regular basis. Whoever makes the most accurate prediction wins a fantastic prize! (The prize is actually a sense of pride in one's prescient abilities. Oh, and my thanks :)) Quantitative Scores: July 21st - PowerPrep 1 ...................................................................................................................................760 July 23rd - Nova Software ............................................................................................................................................. 790 July 23rd - Barron's 200X software ................................................................................................... 730 July 24th - Kaplan CAT 1 ...................................................................................................... 700 July 26th - PowerPrep 1 (repeated on a diff computer) ...................................................................................................... 800 July 27th - Princeton Rev (stomach ache; spent 5 minutes in the bathroom) ... 610 July 28th - Power Prep 2 - (filled in 2 circles wrong, 2 careless, 2 legit mistakes) ............ 680 July 28th - Kaplan CAT 2 ......................................................................................................... 720 July 28th - Cambridge -....................................................................................................................730 July 29th - Nova Soft Cat 2 ............................................................................................................................................ 800 July 29th - Princeton rev Cat 2 (redo after 2 weeks) ..........................................................................................750 July 31st - Princeton rev Cat 3 (redo after 2 weeks) ...................................................................................................... 790 July 31st - Kaplan Cat 3 .............................................................................................................................................. 790 ???????? - Nova 3 ......................................................................................................................................... 750 Aug 1st - Princeton Rev 4 .................................................................................................................................... 770 Aug 3rd - Barron's 2007 CAT on CD ................................................................................... 710 Aug 5th - Barron's 2007 paper diagnostic .............................................................................................................. 770 Aug 5th - ETS PP 2 - (a retake; HOWEVER I didnt recognize any of the questions after so many Cats in between tests) .........800 Aug 5th - Barron paper test 2 .................................................................................. 700 Aug 6th - Princeton Rev 1 redo ........................................................................... 690 Verbal: (not too worried since almost always +600)
  7. Ahh I see. This is reassuring. Thanks gentlemen! And art_vandelay; I'd hire you as my latex salesman anyday
  8. Very simple question though I disagree with the supposed answer: 5x = 6y Col A: The Ratio of X:Y Col B: The Ratio of Y:X I know it's tempting to say A, but what if x = y = o in which case the ratios are equally undefined? Wouldn't this make the answer D? In fact the answer is A and it has left me fuming. Please advise.
  9. Thanks Moon. It does pain me to read that though. Jebus. Gallons and yards. I feel like I'm talking about pirate ships haha.
  10. haha, I'm actually in the opposite position you're in; my math is fluctuating between 700-790 on a day to day basis but I could do the verbal section half dead and come up with +550 Word Power by Norman Lewis is a great read that easily adds a few hundred words to your vocabulary. It's also a good idea to be on the lookout for new words everyday. Wiktionary is a great resource! I also wrote a long winded note on facebook and I tried to incorporate as many obscure words as possible. The challenge of packing in that kind of word density into a sensical quasi-entertaining story helped to cement some word meanings for me.
  11. I think you just blew my mind away! Congrats dude! I'm both happy for you and quite envious at the same time. My latest Kaplan is Q790 and V630. I'll be happy if I can score that on the real deal :S
  12. I agree with what friendofafriend said. Also - "nadakota"? You actually liked digital fortress?
  13. No, my question isn't whether or not I need to know conversion from one unit to another; my question is whether or not I'll need to be aware of imperial conversions in addition to metric ones (ie. I work with cm and metres usually)
  14. Hey mate, I'm writing my GRE in I think Permutations and Combinatorics is definitely lower on the priority scale, which is why I only did a perfunctory run-through of it and never looked back. However, I was doing a mock CAT from Princeton Review and the first question was one on combinatorics. I totally forgot how to do it the right way (ie. the fast way) and did it the blunt force way which probably took a minute longer than needed. In short; probably a good idea to get yourself acquainted with combinatorics "just in case." It doesn't take too long. You really just need to know: 1. The difference between a combination and a permutation 2. How to calculate the number of combinations you can make (N Choose R) 3. How to calculate the number of permutations you can make (N Pick R) 4. Special cases like when you have repeated items and cyclical permutations
  15. Hello friends, I'm having trouble consistently kicking my low-mid 700 into high 700-800 territory. Could someone please enlighten me with the following: Thank you in advance! EDIT: Solved/figured out nevermind!
