  1. technical events were sort of like making a working model of something given and using the same to perform a certain activity. I don't know how useful this information is though. I think GRE scores are not given that great a weightage. You should still look up the university's admission FAQ and figure what the univ wants (they usually put up the average scores of their new enrollment).. I have admits from CMU and Cornell, but rejections from UIUC and UCLA. UIUC was expected. UCLA I'm still shocked. I thought I stood a fair chance. Also in rankings, UCLA is ranked #10 or #11 and both CMU and Cornell are ranked higher. I guess we just won't be able to solve the mystery of college admissions. If you think you can perform better than last time in your GRE, go ahead. 1390 is great too.. Also, for an engg background, I think Q scores counts a lot. Anyways, laters silverfox12
  2. I cannot say then. I mean there are cases when they kind of consider overlooking the minimum requirements and at times they are stringent and reject the application without even considering it. Have you considered retaking the GRE? I mean the Verbal score is great, but you could look into your Quant scores where to improve.. There is a site where you can actually see which question you got right and which ones wrong on the actual GRE that you have taken. It wont show the question but it will show what you answered, whether it was right and what difficulty level it was (level 3,4, or 5). I forget the site's name. Google it. All the best. :)
  3. Hey gremeteor, You should not be worried. I think if you have a good profile overall, then chances of you getting in are quite reasonable. I am talking from personal experience. My profile was not good enough, or so I thought. I have good academics but no papers to my name. I have participated in a few technical events and that is all. I was not the organizer or anything. Just a participant. I took up GRE twice. First time was okay (1270-480V +790Q) and second was good (1420 - 620V + 800Q). I think your SOP, LOR and general academic background along with a 1400+ GRE score should propel you through to a top 10 uni. All the best. silverfox12
  4. Hey, Let me guess. You are from the Indian sub-continent? If so, high-five. Same here. I think you stand a fair chance. My friend got admitted into Electrical Engg Fall 2011 in Virginia Tech (CGPA - 8/10 and GRE - 1460 ) . He got a call early Feb. Heard back yet from the 4 univ you have applied to? I think LSU is safe coz another friend of mine from Mech has applied there.
  5. Hey, Has anyone from Electrical received any admission offers from Georgia Tech? I have applied there for Fall 2011 MS EE and I haven't heard as yet. So I wanted to know if anyone has received as yet. Also, if you have, how did you get the intimation? By Post, email or buzzport? Please let me know. I am very nervous.:( Thanks silverfox12
  6. Hey I faced a similar problem when I applied to UCLA. Though I had given my date as Oct/2010, it showed something else. Apparently that was an automatic system generated value on the university's database. They said that once the official scores from ETS are received, they would update the date on their database. I reckon that you might be facing a similar situation. Still, to be sure of the error, email the universities and they should get back to you in a week's time. Hope it helps.:) Silverfox12
  7. Hey. I recently got accepted by both CMU and Cornell for MS ECE Fall 2011. Any inputs as to which is better? Any suggestions / help would be great. Thanks silverfox12
  8. CMU is one of the really good schools for MS in CS. You should apply there, seeing your credentials are good. Also, don't hesitate in applying. Just apply and the outcome will either be an acceptance or a rejection. So, don't worry. From a personal experience. I applied to the the top 10 schools (sans MIT, Stanford, UCB, CalTech) for MS EE. I took the GRE twice [1270 - 480V,790Q,4.0AWA and 1420 - 620V,800Q,4.5AWA] in a gap of 3 months (Jul and then Oct 2010). I am still in my final year of undergrad. I have a good CGPA. I have accpetances from CMU and Cornell. I do not have any papers published or any projects that I have done over the course of my undergrad. Still I was accepted by CMU. So don't hesitate. Take that step and apply. You never know! All the best! :)
  9. Thats awesome Mixolydian. I didn't apply to Stanford EE. But I am happy. Also, I heard back from Cornell. They accepted me for their Fall'11 M.Eng ECE program. This is really wicked news. 2 down. 5 more to go. :D :D :D
  10. @Mixolydian: Sorry for the late reply.. was busy I applied for M.Eng.ECE in the following schools: Cornell, Georgia, UIUC, UMich - AnnArbor, UCLA, UT - Austin, CMU. Got accepted in CMU for the M.Eng. Fall 2011 Waiting replies from others.
  11. Congrats. I'm awaiting their call. Applied to M.S. ECE.
  12. thanks stevekho The answer really depends on you. If you feel you are confident enough to face the GRE with the 800 odd words , then go ahead. On the other hand, if you feel that you cannot face the GRE without knowing all the words, then you should study as many as you can. Also, I'd like to suggest something. I was talking to my friend the other day, who is also gonna face the GRE in like 2 months. She has given up on Barron's. According to her, Nova is a better book to study words from. I'd also suggest that you do go through all the words atleast once. Do the words from Kaplan's and see the way they have arranged their words.(its a thesaurus kinda approach, hence easier to recollect words . for eg: lessen --> mitigate, attenuate, pacify. ) . Have a look at Princeton's word lists. They're a good revision once you are done with any other book. Also, please don't be solely focused on doing words. Take practice tests and see where you lag. Like say RC. Then practice RC. If its Analogies, practice more analogies. Sure, knowing words would make the job easier, but timing is important too. Hope this info suffices. All the Best. 13. Hey all. I just got done with my GRE, and am all excited. The reason is that I had taken up GRE earlier in July and was kinda disappointed with my score (790q, 480v) .. I had my prep all wrong. What I had done earlier was just the high frequency words from barron's, kaplan and princeton. I knew I had to.change it. So this is what I did this time.. I picked up barron's and started wordlists .. I gave up after 20.. then I picked up word power made easy and big book. I solved all big book practice tests , only antonyms and came across so many new words. Then I got back to high frequency words. And took powerprep. GOt 1310 and 1410 in both. Finally , I faced the actual GRE. And to my.surprise, I got 800q and 620v. Silverfox12.
  14. hey sorry for the really late reply, i had no access to the internet. I really hope you have done very well, and that you are happy with your score. Tc, Silverfox12 :)
