  1. What kind of research are you interested in? Financial archival? If that's the case, I would say USC would be my top pick (but I don't know too much about Utah's program). Now if you're talking about audit research or behavorial research, I think Wisconsin or Indiana might be better fits.
  2. No worries, I was just curious. Did they send you an email indicating you were on the shortlist?
  3. For the accounting folks, I saw an acceptance to Illinois posted on TGC.
  4. I would agree that it's a very good thing. When you say UW, do you mean Wisconsin or Washington?
  5. taxphd- Thanks for the list. I'll definitely be making my way through it over the next few months. phdhope- I've definitely been looking through the more recent volumes of the main journals and picking papers to read that are within my research interests. I've also been on SSRN quite a bit to see papers in progress from profs whose research interests me. Thanks to you both for the input.
  6. Hey everyone. Before starting a program next fall, I was hoping to read through some of the base literature in the field so I'm somewhat familiar. I thought maybe those that are currently in a program (or those with more knowledge than me) could suggest essential papers. I'm primarily concerned with financial archival papers, but please list any and all. Thanks!
  7. deficiency- Thanks for the info. I'm accounting myself (did the username give it away? :)) and was actually admitted to a school a few weeks ago, so I wonder if we're considering the same school. I had prior contact with the department though so I understand this is highly unusual. I'm still waiting on the rest of my apps though. gusadolphus- Completely agree. No need to make the waiting worse than it already is.
  8. I'm glad a thread is started for this. I am personally dying to hear from schools. I'm just curious, what do you mean when you say 'a great deal of recruiting has occurred in this past week'? Do you mean schools have been contacting people?
  9. I think it definitely depends on the program, but you can look at schools that have admissions data for 2010 broken down by area. For example, last year, the percentage of marketing applications out of the total at a few schools was: Kellogg (16%), Emory (16%), Haas (13%). You can get a general idea, but again, it depends on if the school has a better reputation for marketing, etc.
  10. Sorry to bring this thread back again, but I'm planning on self-studying micro this spring/summer and will be using the Nicholson text. I noticed that the current edition is the 10th edition, but are there any drastic changes from the 8th/9th editions? Thanks in advance for the input.
  11. If I'm not mistaken, I believe NYU has a PhD prep track. I think it's structured differently for each person based on his/her background.
  12. I thought about doing an econ phd but the type of research I'm interested in is in the accounting field. Plus, I've had far more accounting classes, more work experience in accounting and a CPA (and enjoy it more- minus the CPA studying part).
  13. I'm planning on applying for Fall 2011 and just took my GMAT today so I'm ready to post my stats and get some school recommendations. I'm looking mainly at Big 10 schools right now, but I'm open to any. B.A. Accounting/Economics: 3.55 (2008) Small liberal arts school (good rep though) GPA within my majors was about 3.7. Graduated with Economics Honors. GMAT: 730 (Q48/V42) Other Qual: Licensed CPA Relevant Courses: A lot of accounting, stats (A), econometrics (A), intermediate micro (A), intermediate macro (B+), real analysis (C- yikes!), Calc 1/2- completed in hs. I'm currently taking multivariable calc (have an A so far and the final grade will be in before I apply) Work Exp: 2 years Big 4 audit. Currently working for a Fortune 500 company. Research Exp: Did an honors research thesis for my econ degree. Published in 2 econ journals with my advisor. Presented at a few conferences. Currently working on a third paper with him that we just presented, will hopefully have under review at a journal soon. LOR: one from my co-author (econ prof), one from another econ prof, one from accounting prof Research Interests: Financial Archival- I'm primarily interested in the economic consequences of disclosure regulation/accounting standard changes Right now I'm planning to apply to Northwestern, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Maryland. Considering NYU/Penn but not sure. My major weakness is my math background. I got a C in real analysis as a freshman because I didn't know how much work was required, etc. Just bad timing. I'm hoping that taking MV calc will help. I'm also planning to take linear algebra and a grad level micro econ theory this spring (addressed in my statement of purpose). Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
  14. I don't know much about finance phd programs, but I would take a look at the school's websites to see where recent graduates have been placed, what faculty interests are (if they are similar to yours or you find them interesting) and how active faculty is in publishing in top journals. Also, see if the schools have any recruiting fairs coming up this fall that you could attend. Hope this helps.
  15. I guess I didn't explain myself well with the whole contacting schools thing. It definitely depends on the program, but I know some coordinators like to meet prospective students. Also, I wouldn't send the program coordinator a list of questions right off the bat but just express interest in the program and see if there's a phd student you can aim questions at. Again, that's just been my experience but I definitely understand if some people don't feel comfortable doing it. As for applying to Texas, I say go for it. You never know unless you try.
  16. Your profile is very strong so I would recommend applying to the programs you want, because you never know what they're looking for. I think taking some more difficult math classes would be a great way to show ad-coms about your commitment to a phd program. I would also suggest maybe getting in touch with the phd program coordinator at some of your top choices and asking questions about the program/showing your interest. It might help when they're sorting through lots of apps to help you stand out.
  17. Thanks for the input. I'm hoping to have most of my apps in during the first week of December. I'm taking a math class that I'd like to sent the grade for and the grades aren't due until Nov 30, so it'll be asap after that.
  18. Hi everyone, I'm planning to apply to some accounting phd programs this fall (will have a detailed post after I take the GMAT in 2 weeks) and was wondering what protocol call is for submitting your applications. For example, if a program's deadline is 1/15/11, when would be a reasonable time to submit? December? Earlier? I'm just trying to get a sense of when I should aim to have everything complete and don't want to be on the back end of submissions. Thanks for the input.
