My Target Scores

  1. Hello everyone, To give you a quick background, I have almost 8 years of corporate tax experience at a Big4. I am considering a move to academia but, due to personal reasons, will start the application process next year. I hope that this forum will shed some light on a few questions that I have. Any recommendations on programs that have strong interest in tax research? Most of the research papers published by schools that I have seen so far (granted I just looked at a few schools) are focused on financial accounting / capital markets. Is it worth pursuing only those programs that have been publishing in tax (which I would prefer), or do I need to "branch out" to other accounting fields, i.e., FA, audit to broaden the pool. Correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I can tell from the discussions on this forum, practical work experience doesn't play that much of a role once you are past the 2-3 year mark. Would 9 years of public accounting actually hinder my chances of acceptance by T40? Thanks much!
  2. BC has strong empirical faculty but its accounting PhD program is relatively new. Minnesota has strong faculty in analytical and its empirical strength has improved a lot. How to choose between these three programs? Any comments will be much appreciated!
  3. I need help planning what I am going to do over the next two years to maximize my chances of getting into a good Accounting PhD program. To start, here is my current profile: GMAT: Have not taken yet but my mock scores average 720 with a high quant score. I plan to take the test when my application draws nearer. Undergrad degree: BS Accounting. I graduated with honors from the top university in my country in Southeast Asia (but not Singapore or HK) and in the top 10% of my batch. Grad degree: MS in Public Policy and Management from a good US School (think Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, Texas A&M). I pursued this masters because of a scholarship. My quality point average was 4.0/4.0 and I graduated with high honors. Relevant subjects taken: During undergrad, I took Intro to Microecon (A), Intro to Macroecon (A), Calculus 1 and 2 (A+), Foundations of abstract math (A-), International Trade and Dev’t Policy (A), and Intro to Stat (A+) I also took heaps of accounting and finance subjects for my bachelor’s degree. During my masters, I took Applied Microecon (A), Applied Macroecon (A+), and Statistical Reasoning (A+). I also took a subject on Data Analytics and Database Management (don't know if these are relevant) I am currently planning to enroll in Calc 3 and Linear Algebra which I will likely finish by the time I apply. Work experience: 5 months with a Big4 office in my country in the Transaction Advisory Group, 1 year of full-time work with a small firm that provides accounting services to SMEs. I also have close to 2 years work experience of part-time work with the small firm. Teaching Experience: After working in industry, I got a job as a full-time instructor in the top university in my country. I have 4 years of teaching experience and have taught heaps of accounting and finance subjects. I've also had several small projects consulting for small businesses. Research experience: I am expecting a sole-authored journal article to be published in my college’s local journal (a low-tier journal) some time next year. I am also expecting a book chapter I’ve co-authored to be published soon. LORs: No popular LORs but all from academics Research interests: Earnings management, disclosures Other: I am a CPA in my country and I have also passed the level 1 exam of the CFA. I also know Python and STATA (used them for my research). Based on my personal evaluation, here are the weaknesses of my current profile: I have little work experience with a large company. I can still improve my quant and econ background. My masters isn’t a MAcc like those of most accounting PhD students (I don't have the resources to pursue one) I can improve my GMAT (working on this) No rockstar LORs Little research experience Currently, I’m still employed as faculty member by the university and I have the benefit of taking Econ Stats and Econometrics if I wanted to. However, I will have to take those subjects on the side and it will take me a year to finish both. I also have the option of looking for a job now to address the first weakness I identified. My main question is this: should I stay in my current workplace and take the econ subjects or should I leave and get another job to improve my work experience? What would maximize my chances of landing a top accounting PhD? Also, given my current profile, how likely am I to get into the top 20 to 40 schools? Thanks in advance to anyone who can give their insights!
  4. Hello everyone! I am currently in my last year of undergrad, and I am interested in getting my PhD in accounting. I am really unsure as to where I should start in this entire situation, and I was hoping I could gain a little clarity as to what I could focus on. Undergrad: 3.86 GPA in Accountancy and Finance. Graduated in 3 years from a top accounting school. Graduate: Will be completing my MAcc in the upcoming year. GMAT: Never taken an actual exam, I have scored in the 740-750 range on practice exams. Courses: Have completed a variety of courses related to accounting and finance. Macro, micro, and intermediate micro economics. A variety of statistics courses. Calc 1 and 2. Teaching experience: I am the head TA for a course related to business management, and teamwork. I am, also, planning on teaching accounting courses for duration of my MAcc. Research: I have little research experience, but I am looking at being a research assistant at my University in the upcoming semester. Work experience: I have held an internship in the past, and I will be interning at a big four accounting firm next Summer. Letters of rec: I have multiple people that I know would be willing to write a letter of rec for me. One of them has a strong background in research, and others are in accounting academia. Weaknesses: Most obviously my work and research experience. Letters of rec I think are also something I could improve on. Also, my math background is also very weak. Questions: Are there any courses that you think I should try taking over the next year? Should I apply to PhD programs in the upcoming Fall, or should I wait until I have more tangible work experience? What are my biggest weaknesses to an observer? I am a little lost in this entire process, and I really appreciate any and all feedback that you guys have for me. Thanks for taking the time to read my post. :)
  5. Hello, everyone! I’m applying for PhD in Accounting programs of 2021 intake. I would appreciate it very much if you could give some advice or comments. Test Scores: GMAT 740 (97% percentile) verbal 39, math 51; TOEFL 111 (Speaking 25) Undergraduate: top 4 universities in China (PKU, THU, SJTU, FDU), BBA in Accounting & BS in Psychology (dual degree), GPA 3.68/4.00 (top 10%) Graduate: top 4 universities in China (PKU, THU, SJTU, FDU), MSc in Finance, GPA 3.77/4.00 Relevant Courses: Economics, Finance & Accounting: Theory of Corporate Finance (PhD level, A); Advanced Microeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomics, two accounting PhD summer school courses, etc. Math: Advanced Econometrics, Advanced Microeconometrics, Business Forecasting Analytics, Quantitative Analysis & Modeling, etc. Psychology: undergraduate level courses. Research Interests: Archival Financial Accounting, Earnings Quality, Debt Contracting, Corporate Governance Research Experience: Three research experience for three accounting professors, including empirical analysis, literature review, data cleaning, financial analysis, etc. Working Papers: two, including my master thesis (debt contracting) and another working paper (earnings quality) Teaching Experience: Organization and Management (undergraduate level), Extended Learning and Student Activities Course (master level) Work Experience: no full-time working experience, have internship experiences in private equity investment, strategic investment, consulting and financial management. Letters of Recommendation: four referees in total, including three accounting professors who have got tenured at US top 10-30 universities and come back to China or Singapore recently; three accounting professors for whom I have acted as a research assistant, one accounting professor of whom I attended two courses and got A. Number of programs planned to apply to: 20-30 Dream Schools: I will mainly apply for top 20-50 programs, and my dreams schools are top 20-30 programs like UCLA, Minnesota, Florida, etc. Question: Do you have any advice on my target school list? Should I also apply for several lower tier programs? I have obvious weaknesses including not having referees who are still in the US, not taking PhD level economics courses. Currently what I can do to make up them to some extent? I have no full time working experience, but quite a few accounting PhD programs prefer applicants with full time working experience in accounting firms. So should I apply for several finance PhD programs, given I am also interested in corporate finance? But all my referees are accounting professors, so is it okay for me to apply for finance programs or should I just focus on accounting programs? Thank you so much!
  6. Hello! My dream is to get my PhD in Accounting (I am interested in experimental and archival research related to financial disclosures, non-GAAP measures and SOX management) and attend a school like the University of Washington, USC, UT Austin or UC Illinois. I have a good background (I think) except for my GMAT score. - Undergrad dual degree BBA in Marketing and BS in Accounting (3.8 GPA) - CPA - 4 years at Deloitte in external audit serving one of our largest clients - 2 years in Internal Audit Manager at a Fortune 100 company - Genuine passion for research and super driven individual!!! - GMAT: 690 (Q47 V38) I am wondering if anyone knows if GMAT cutoffs at this caliber of schools is a real thing. I've heard rumors that the cutoff is 700 but with the applications due in December I'm not sure that I can realistically restudy in less than a month and get higher than a 700. I will definitely try but want to know my options if it doesn't work out. Please help!!!!!!!
  7. Hi, I am a second-year master's student outside the US. I am planning to apply for PhD accounting programs this winter. From my country, it is rare to pursue PhD in the US, so I would appreciate the advice. (I posted almost same content a few days ago, but I noticed there was a typo in title and it didn't make sense. So, I re-post it with a few modifications. Sorry for messing the forum.) University: #1 top school in my country. Test Scores: I have not taken GMAT (I know it's behind desirable schedule), but my projection is 700-720 with Q50 or Q51. TOEFL score is 107 (R30, L30, S23, W24). I thin I can bump up the speaking & wring score to around 26. Undegrad GPA: B.A. in Economics, 3.8/4.0Graduate GPA: M.A. in Business 4.0/4.0 Research Experience: In my graduation thesis (undergrad), I wrote a research paper in archival accounting and got an award for it. I surveyed 100+ papers published in top journals, built original hypotheses, and found consistent results with my hypothesis. However, it was written not in English. I am writing a master thesis, in which I exploit a unique natural experiment to answer a question related to earnings quality. I am writing this in English, but I am not sure if I can finish it before application (so that I can send it as a writing sample.) Teaching Experience: None. Is this bad? Work Experience: I went master's program directly from undergrad, so I don't have any full-time work experience. However, I passed CPA exam of my country (not registered yet) and did an internship job at Big-four. Relevant classes: - Economics: I have taken first-year PhD level microeconomics (text was MWG) and econometrics (text was Greene). Moreover, I have taken second-year PhD course in econometrics (advance asymptotic theory etc.). I got As in these classes. - Math: I have taken (i) abstract linear algebra, (ii) optimization, (iii) probability and measure theory, (iv) functional analysis, (v) real analysis. I got As in these classes. - Finance: I have taken graduate-level financial economics class and derivatives class (stochastic calculus) Research Interest: Disclosure, Conservatism, Earnings quality, Earnings management. Although I have never done research in theory since there is no faculty who do theory in my univ., I also want to do research in theory (EM and disclosure). Letters of recommendation: (i) Accounting professor. My adviser in undergrad and master. She got PhD in my country and never published in top journals, but has published many papers in the second tier. She will strongly recommend me, but I am not sure if professors in the US take seriously at her words since she got PhD outside the US and have not published in top journals. (ii) (iii) Econ professors. These professors got PhD in US and have sent many students to top Econ PhD programs. I hope they will write that I have a solid econ background with the level that I can pass course-works of top Econ PhD programs. But, they don't know much about my research ability. Dream Schools: Stanford, MIT, Booth, Duke, Michigan, Penn, NYU, Columbia, Northwestern, Toronto, CMU, Ohio, Rice, Iowa, Florida, Illinois, PennState Question: - Am I aiming too high ranked school? I have read through many threads but I get the feeling that I can get into T50 schools. But, I am not sure I am good enough to get into T20 or T10. How do you think about my profile? Again since it is rare to apply for the U.S. PhD program from my country, any comment would be highly appreciated. - Is there any good second-tier school that facilitates both theory and archival? I got the impression that T10 schools offer training in both theory and archival, but some of the second-tier school don't have theory faculty. Thanks in advance.

  9. Does the stress level of students in Accounting PhD programs vary much by school? Are lower ranked programs less stressful? Do some programs have a less/more pressurized culture? Any schools in particular? Thanks for your input.
  10. Hi everyone. It is my first time posting so I am unsure if this is the right sub-forum for my question but here goes.I am a citizen from a developing country (Philippines) strongly considering an Accounting PhD. I am aware that the business schools with the best reputation are in the US; US business schools have placements all over the world. My issue is with the certainty of my work prospects after graduation in the countries where I want to work. Visa rules in the US are much stricter compared to Canada, UK, or Australia; the US only grants a one year visa post-PhD whereas the other countries grant visas from 2 to 4 years. In other words, I only have at most one year to find work after my PhD in the US but up to 4 years in the non-US countries. My goal really is to work in the non-US countries as I like their working culture better. My question is: given my aspirations, which country should I prioritize in my application? If it matters, my ideal workplace would be a university in Australia, followed by Canada, then Europe/UK. Assuming I get admission in a T25 US school and a T4 Aussie school, which program should I pursue? Hoping to hear from someone familiar with the immigration difficulties in each country.
  11. Hello, I am searching for some evaluation on my candidacy for top PhD programs, as I am hoping to be ready to apply by this fall/winter for 2021 admission. My background: Undergrad GPA: 3.7 from a large state school with a Top 25 PAR ranking (for small-faculty schools) Masters GPA: 3.7 MAcc from large state school (5-year concurrent program with undergrad degree) Research Experience: Served as an undergrad RA on a research project that was published in Contemporary Accounting Research. Worked as a student researcher for a school-sponsored thinktank for 1 year as well. Teaching experience: Worked as a grad teaching assistant for 1.5 years. Work included teaching labs, proctoring tests, grading, and test prep. Work Experience: 2.5 years (3 busy seasons) in public accounting with PwC; 2 years in management consulting (Fortune 500 clients). CPA Licensed Math: Here is where it gets sticky (hopefully here and not before). I took AP Calc in HS and got a 5, so I technically have Calc I and II college credits. I also took and passed Business Statistics I and II. Currently starting to plan for the GMAT. I took a practice exam on mba.com and projected a score of 700. I have been a good test taker historically, and I think with 45-ish days of study I can get into the 730-740 range. Research preferences: Probably financial or audit (not sure yet, is that bad?). Either way I am interested in archival methodology. Letters of recommendation would come from well respected and published professors, including two that have published in JAR. All three are tenured, if that matters. Here are my questions (any and all input welcome): 1. What is the best method for me to get up-to-snuff on math? If I have the credits, is it a question of whether I understand the math? Or will they want to see recent courses passed for calc/calc-based probability and stats? 2. With my resume, will a 720-740 GMAT suffice? 3. Is my research experience worth mentionting? 4. What else can I do to improve my profile? Thank you in advance. I am excited to get started on this journey.
  12. Hello all, I am posting because I have really wanted to be a professor and am thinking I may actually pursue a phd. I haven't done much work and am just sort of seeing how competitive my profile may be and what I can do to improve it. Undergrad GPA: 3.73 from a large state school with a top accounting program - double major acctg / finance Masters GPA: 3.5 Macc from same school - (integrated program) Research Experience: None Teaching experience: None (was a TA for a couple semesters early on in UG but responsibilities were mostly grading) Work Experience: So far 1 year of investment banking experience CPA Licensed as well as several FINRA licenses needed for IB Math: Only 1 business calc class but if I ended up applying for programs I would take necessary courses at the CC or online. I can probably get good LOR's from some professors and / or people at the bank I work at. I know that since I have not taken the GMAT or GRE yet it will be hard to say exactly where I will be competitive, I am a good test taker so assume I can get at least a 700. Will I be competitive with this background at top schools assuming a good GMAT score? Further, I am not set on an accounting PHD but figured since I am a CPA, I will have a better chance of getting into a better program than a finance PHD program. Is that correct? I want to go to a top program but will settle for a lesser one that is still good if it means that it is not as crazily research focused as I hear the top top ones like Penn / MIT / Stanford / Chicago would be because ultimately I am more interested in the teaching aspect. Have no idea what I want to research yet - have not gotten that far, but just want some feedback if with this background I would be at all competitive at good schools.

  14. Hello everyone, I am hoping to get some insight on how to proceed with my goal of getting into an Accounting PhD program. I know I don't have the best profile right now, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to improve my stats before applying. About me: 30 year old female Bachelor's in Accounting - 3.43 GPA (3.5 Business GPA) at a reputable state university) GMAT: 660 (Q: 49 V: 31 IR:6) 5+ years of work experience (2 years - top 10 national public accounting firm, 3 years - Federal government, Active CPA license Active CFE license No research experience No teaching experience Math classes taken in undergrad: Statistics I, Statistics II, Calculus I As you can see, nothing about me is great (yet!). So my question is, what would be the best way to proceed? Should I go for my Master's and try to get as high of a graduate GPA and GMAT score as possible? I don't have a strong quantitative background, so I am thinking obtaining a Master's degree in Data Analytics might be more beneficial. At the same time, Master's in Accounting will expose me to accounting professors and give me the opportunity to earn some good letters from them. I'm leaning towards going for Master's in Accounting and completing courses in Calculus II and Data Analytics (i.e. SAS, SPSS, SQL, etc.) through Coursera and/or community college to compensate for the lack of research experience/quantitative background. I should note that I am not necessarily going for a top-tier school, as I know those are likely out of my reach regardless of what I do in the next couple of years. I am just really passionate about learning and education, and I want to pursue a PhD and further my growth and learning. FYI, my research interests lie in the areas of auditing, financial reporting, and the linkage between financial and non-financial variables. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance for the help!
  15. Hi, Planning to apply to PhD in Accounting after 20 years in accounting with major oil & gas companies. Have been postponing PhD for long time, but now decided to leave the comfort zone and get into academia for the love of research and intellectual challenge. Research interests include corporate governance & controls (e.g. budgeting, accounting fraud, information asymmetry) and influenced by work experience Test Scores (GMAT/GRE): GMAT 730 (Q50 / V40) Undegrad GPA: 4.0 (Econ; outside of US, top of the class), graduated 20 years ago Graduate GPA: 2.8 (3.3 second year / 4.0 major in Finance, MBA Top 75 US) graduated 20 years ago Prof.certification: CMA (with gold medal for highest score) obtained 10 years ago Research Experience: N/A Teaching Experience: Currently TA in accounting and finance; taught couple of under- and graduate level courses Work Experience: as mentioned above, managerial positions in accounting and finance with Fortune 100 companies Concentration Applying to: Accounting (Managerial & Financial / Behavioral & Archival) Number of programs planned to apply to: 10-20 Dream Schools: Rotman / INSEAD / MSU Broad Letter Writers: Accounting and finance professors currently TA'ing. Questions or concerns you have about your profile? As I understand age will be a major concern, so would appreciate your help with the list of schools. Should I look only outside of Top 50? Should I shoot for GMAT 750+ to improve profile? Any additional specific questions you may have: Will it make a difference if full funding to be provided by a sponsor?
  16. Test Scores (GMAT/GRE): GMAT 720 (Q50 / V 38) Undegrad GPA: 3.90 (Math/ Econ Double Major) Taken about 8 Grad classes both in Math and Econ discipline. From a solid state university in the Eastern side of the country classes: Math: Cal (I,II,III), linear algebra, Real Analysis (1,2,3), Differential Equations, Chaos theory, linear optimization, etc Econ: Intermediate/Advanced Micro, Macro, econometrics, and etc. Graduate GPA: No Grad Research Experience: Worked with a Finance professor ( Asset Pricing / Merger Effects) and an Econ Professor (Behavioral, econometrics) Teaching Experience: TA a linear algebra and real analysis class Work Experience: X Concentration Applying to: Accounting PhD (Financial Archival) Number of programs planned to apply to: 15 ~ 20 Dream Schools: MIT / Stanford / UChicago Letter Writers: Accomplished Accounting professor, finance and econ professor Other Questions: How would the schools view, if my GMAT score were to be 750 instead? Would that make a big change? What made you want to pursue a PhD? Research and innovative thinking to think outside of the box and push the frontier forward. Questions or concerns you have about your profile? I have taken couple of accounting classes (financial statements) and some accounting courses online. Would I need more than that? How does my GMAT score look? Am I competitive enough? Any additional specific questions you may have: As the opening of application approaches, I am super scared. If you see anything in my profile that I seem to lack, I need some to point it out.
  17. Hi, This year I will be applying to econ and accounting PhD programs. I already have a nice idea about the economics profile required, but I have no idea if that profile is also useful for accounting. For what I have read on the internet, there are some important differences such as the need of working experience. I have a lot of coursework on math and I'm sincerely interested in accounting topics, however, I am from a little country and there are no people with accounting PhDs so I pretend to explain this in my Statement of Purpose and ask for letters of recomendation to 2 actuarial science professors and 1 economics professor. I would be grateful if some of you could help me evaluate my profile for a PhD application in accounting and advise me if there is something I can improve. Also, I would like to know if it makes sense to applyto top 20 programs with my profile or if I better back off from those. Thanks in advance. Basic info University: the most important university in my country but probably unknown in the US. Degrees: Bachelor in Actuarial Science (grade 9.7/10) and Bachelor in Economics (grade 9.5/10). Working experience: Two years in risk management in a bank and currently one year in an economics research institution. Research experience: Coauthored 1 paper in actuarial science published in a low-tier journal and currently working as research assistant on paper on economics. Teaching Experience: Mathematical Theory of Interest (1 semester), Fundamentals of Risk and Insurance (1 semester) [All at the same university where I studied]. Usual requirements TOEFL: 107/120 (Reading - 27/30, Listening - 30/30, Writing - 25/30, Speaking - 25/30) GRE: Quant 169, Verbal 159 Letters of Recommendation: Thinking about two profs from math and one from econ since my accounting professors only hold a master from my own university, and have no research experience at all. Research Interests: Actuarial Science methods for accounting and risk measurement. Decision models and data analysis applied to accounting matters such as financial statements. Courses Accounting: Accounting Principles (10/10), Intermediate Accounting I (10/10), Intermediate Accounting II (9.5/10), Analysis of Financial Statements (10/10). 18. Hello everyone! I'm prepping to apply to doctoral programs in accounting. My interest is in behavioral accounting. Is there a list somewhere that shows schools that specialize in behavioral accounting?
  19. Hey Guys, This is my first post on this forum, and I need some advice involving the development of my PhD in Accountancy Application Profile and Coursework. Explanation of my situation: I recently left audit - public accounting (Not Big 4, but Large International Firm) after working their for a bit under a year and I am currently working on developing my application for PhD in Accountancy. I have an Undergrad and a Master's degree in Accounting from a respected program in my state. I have passed all 4 sections of the CPA and currently in the process of completing the work experience requirement. In my undergrad I had a 3.8 Accounting GPA and in my Graduate Degree 3.6 GPA. During my master's program I was also a Graduate Teacher's Assistant and taught classes for 3000 and 4000 level courses. I took the GMAT when I entered the Master's program, however my master's program only required a 550 score, so I just walked into after light review for 3 hours the day prior. I know I will have to retake the GMAT and score somewhere near or above a 700. I talked with my friend that is in the top PhD program in our state and he gave me some insight on how to make my profile competitive. He told me in the very least that I need to have Calculus II completed. That I should looked into some Econometric Courses, that I should try to get a certification in SAS and introduce myself to Probability Theory, and statistic course. I additionally spoke to a person that recently finished is PhD Candidacy at the University that I was completing my Master's, and he gave me advice for the construction of the essay applications and the Letters of Recommendations, so I believe that shouldn't be too difficult for me. Also, since I was a Graduate TA and an engaged student, I had alot of facetime with alot of the different professors involve with research, so the letters of recommendation shouldn't be a problem. What I'm concerned about is the timing. For Accounting, they didn't require Calculus, they only require Applied Calculus, so I never took any of the Precalcs on the University level (did calculus and precalc in highschool... but never got credit because it was dual enrollment and I missed too many classes). When I left public accounting a few months ago, I quickly signed up for a Precalc/Trig Class and got an easy A. In August I begin Calculus I, and I plan to take courses through Calc III/Linear Algebra, and maybe some Statistic Courses. I have already taken Statistics I & II due to my accounting program requirements. . I spoke to the Department Chair at the community college as I was entering for Math, and was offered a job as an Adjunct Professor, so I will be teaching as an Adjunct Professor for Intro to Financial Accounting on the same days(TTH) I will be taking my math courses, so that works out to be beneficial. However, the Econometric courses that was recommended to me is being taught at the University which is a 1 hour commute away and is on MW at noon. I know being an Adjunct Professor doesn't add to the strength of my profile since PhD is focused on research, but it allows me the free time to really focus on developing a strong GMAT score. It will also take away the learning curve when i have to enter the class during my PhD program. Questions: I am not in a huge rush to get into a PhD program, but I would prefer to apply in next Application window that is from September - December, versus the following year. However I won't have completed the Math Requirements of Calculus II until May. Does this mean that my schedule for PhD applications is more so a year out? Involving the Econometric Courses, that commute and timing of the course would take alot of the work week options away. I had been thinking of working at a small local accounting firm MWF to keep the cash flow st sincedecent Adjunct Pay is horrible. I see that there are alot of Econometric Courses available online, but they aren't as verifiable at the University..Do you think Econometric Courses at the University would be worth the effort? Could I just take an online course to get introduce to the material? The Econometric course questions is the more immediate question of wonder due to the fact that I have to think what I will do starting mid August. However, the timing of the PhD application is also big concern, because it will orient on how I situate myself. I appreciate any feedback. Thanks
  20. Test Scores: GMAT: 720; Quant: 44, Verbal: 44, IR: 7 Undergrad GPA: 3.7; accounting major at a Big 10 school Graduate GPA: 3.7; MSA with concentration in tax from Notre Dame Research Experience: None Teaching Experience: None Work Experience: 2 years as a tax associate at a Big Four firm Additional Info: CPA licensed Computer science minor Plan on receiving letters of recommendation from professors at ND Plan on retaking GMAT and improving quant score No calculus taken in college Interested in research-focused program Research Areas of Interest: the intersection of technology and accounting Questions: 1. With my masters in tax and tax experience will I be limited to tax research? Or have better chances of getting into a program with a focus on tax? 2. Should I take a calculus course or other math course before applying? Online or community college? If online, what are good options? 3. Would I need to find schools that have professors publishing about my research area of interest or is that too specific a criteria? 4. What tier of schools should I be looking at, given my profile? Thank you!
  21. Hi there, Please see my profile below: Undergraduate in Accounting (not in North America) GPA: 3.3 Master in Accounting (top 3 in Canada) GPA: 3.3 Work Experience: 3 years +, Non-big 4 in Canada and got my CPA designation GMAT 720 I made up my mind about PhD Accounting after I started working and I couldn't go back change the history. I saw my research related skills as a major weakness so I did a few online courses in econometrics, math for programming(not proof-based math), programming(python) and finance. My skill set is getting better but I don't think that will be good enough. So my questions are: 1. What do you think that I can improve with my profile? 2. I've been told how important math is for PhD in Accounting. But I'm not sure what are the other sources from which I can learn and, more importantly, prove that I got the math skill required. Can you please share some sources for math learning? Thank you in advance for all your help!
  22. Hi everyone, I am planning to apply to accounting PhD program this fall and looking for advice about the best way to improve my profile at this point given that I still have a few months before starting applications. Brief background: Went to a top 20 undergrad accounting program, also got my masters in accounting at that school, have my CPA, will have 6 years of experience at time of application (including time in Big Four audit). Undergrad: GPA between a 3.5-3.6. Only took a few math classes in college: Calc 1 (grade: A), business Calc (grade: B), and statistics (grade: A). Have not touched math since these classes (nearly 10 years ago!) but have always enjoyed math and pick up on it pretty quickly. GMAT: took recently and scored a 730 (46Q/44V, 8 IR). Could make plenty of excuses for underperforming on Quant that day but I won’t. I’m very interested in research (still not decided on method or specific areas of interest). I’ve been reading different publications and starting to refine my specific interests but I am ultimately hoping to end up at a school where I will have some flexibility as I don’t know what will ultimately interest me the most/ what I will be good at. Any advice for best ways to improve my profile at this stage? I think my math background could appear weak given the time away, so I’ve start a Calculus class on Coursera and plan to complete that class as well as another Calc and Linear Algebra course (or at least have them in progress at the time of application). Would focusing on taking these classes be the most beneficial or should I focus on re-taking the GMAT in hopes of scoring closer to my practice tests (~760) with a higher Quant score? thanks for any advice! Stalking this forum has been very helpful haha
  23. Hey guys, I'm interested in studying incentives and its effects and how they affect strategy using experimental/empirical methods. There are a few professors in strategy and managerial accounting that work in this. How do I choose which one to apply a PhD for? What are the factors that I must take into account?
  24. Hi everyone, I am considering entering an experimental based PhD program but I have received mixed messages on such a decision. Is it really that difficult to be placed from an experimental focused program? Is it considerably more difficult to get an experimental paper published in the top 3 compared to an archival or analytical? Is it just the case that there are fewer researchers doing experimental work and that is why there are less experimental publications? Thanks in advance!
