  1. It seems that the placement for LBS is good and stable, but the faculty at Booth is generally much stronger. How to choose between these two programs? Any comments will be much appreciated!
  2. I am a current undergrad at a top 5 (think HYPMS) university. I did not do so well in multivariate calculus and linear algebra (think B/B+), so I am thinking of taking a course at a UC this summer for remediation. Unfortunately, due to COVID, it seems everyone got the same idea, leaving it impossible to register for a course at UCLA/UCB. This leaves me with options at these schools: UCSC: Linear Algebra UCI: Multivariable UCR: Multivariable Linear Algebra I Was wondering if taking any of these courses would help remediate my ****** grade and at least show I am competent in these subjects. I do plan on taking harder courses next year at my school, and hopefully I'll do well. However, I was wondering if the quality of these schools should impact my decision in which school(s) I choose (I can choose multiple thanks to remote instruction), and which school I should choose.
  3. Hey guys, I'm interested in studying incentives and its effects and how they affect strategy using experimental/empirical methods. There are a few professors in strategy and managerial accounting that work in this. How do I choose which one to apply a PhD for? What are the factors that I must take into account?
  4. Please help me solve. I have to answer I just need to know how to get it. Consider that you and a friend are planning to watch 2 movies. There are 20 movies in their collection and you have chosen your 2 favorites (but have chosen not to say what they are) Your friend decides to choose the movie at random. What is the probability that your 2 movies will be the 2 movies your friend's random process selected? Step 2Suppose the movies you have chosen has a preferred order as well. (For example, if you choose a movie and its sequel) What is the probability that your movies will be chosen in the correct order?
  5. Hi, I currently have two options: I have a W in Operations Research (withdrew for multiple reasons). So I could retake this class, or choose to take Advanced Probability. Which option do you think I should take? (I wish I could take both but their lecture times overlap). It would be great if you could let me know what your thoughts are, and thanks!
  6. Dear all, thanks for the great advice about baruch cuny. Just got a great update from Tippie. And now I have to choose between these two. I love all the schools that I applied, so at least there is no research interest bias here. Which one would you recommend? Thanks a lot !!
  7. Hi everyone! I hope i am not posting this in the wrong section. I have been accepted into the Economics Program in Barcelona GSE and the MSc in Economics at Stockholm SSE. Plus, I am waiting for answers from other schools, especially LSE PSE and Bocconi. I am confident I will be accepted in Bocconi, a little less for the other too, I don't know what to expect, but anyway I want to start picturing my options. I am paying the reservation fee in BGSE so that I can take some time to choose Given that I am passionate about Macro, I would lean to choose Barcelona, but the fees are high (no funding, unfortunately) and I am doubtful. I think that it is better compared to Stockholm, given that the latter is free (i am a EU citizen) but I would have to spend two years in the much more costly (and less entertaining, also) Stockholm. Hence, I am thinking about making a bit of a financial stretch and paying for GSE. But what would you advise if i get into the other schools? Of course, as my ridiculous nickname suggests, I would like to continue to a PhD (hopefully the US) later. I am interested in Macro but I am also not sure about that, since I like lots of areas. Also: I got a pretty bad GRE (161 Q, with an interesting, but kind of useless, 169 V): given that I was able to get into a couple of good schools with this, should I think of retaking it anyway? I mean, if I take the Masters in BGSE and place myself good in the course, will the GRE still matter much for a PhD/MRes? (of course I think i can score higher than that, but I really have trouble in when to take the exam). Sorry if I have been long and asked wrong questions, new here. Thank you in advance!
  8. The problem: A set of cards is numbered 1 through 5. Which of the two quantities is larger? Quantity A The number of ways to pick 3 of the 5 cards such that card number 1 is included Quantity B The number of ways to pick 3 of the 5 cards such that card number 1 is excluded Official Answer: The total number of ways to choose 3 out of 10 cards is (5!) / (3!)(2!) = 10 Since you have to choose a 1 for Quantity A, the number of ways to choose the remaining 2 out of 4 cards is: (4!) / (2!)(2!) = 6 = Quantity A So the number of combinations EXCLUDING the number 1 must be 10-6 = 4 = Quantity B HOWEVER, I encountered the attached problem and worked through it assuming ordered mattered, as in for Quantity A, if you picked a 1 first, then a 2, and then a 3, it was different from picking a 2 first, and then a 1, and finally a 3. So my calculation for Quantity A was 4*3 (four ways to choose the first card, and three ways to choose the second) = 12 ways to choose two cards, and then multiplied that by 3, because the number 1 could be picked first, second, or third in any of those combinations. For Quantity B, the calculation was merely 4*3*2 because excluding the 1 there are 4 options for the first card, 3 for the second, and 2 for the third. It appears as though the explanation assumes that every group with the same cards are the same no matter what order they were picked in. Is this just a poorly worded question that wouldn't be on the actual GRE? Or what am I missing that indicates that those groups are different? Thanks!
