My Target Scores

  1. Hi, i am an undergraduate preparing for the econ PHD application. Below is my problem, wish you can help me. I got bad scores(but i past) in two courses: elementary probability theory, and a liberal arts course. I talked with both professors, who proposed to change my grades to "fail" so that i can retake these courses if I want. I am confident to earn a better score if retaking, and by doing this my cumulative GPA is expected rise from 3.6/4 to approximately 3.7/4 (top10%, and the entry of high graduation honors). However, I don't know how graduate colleges will think of these two fails, and how important some increments in cumulative GPA are (my econ-major and math-major GPA is 3.9/4 and 3.8/4) Thus, is this worthy to retake with two "fail"s? Thanks
  2. TLDR:Got my GRE score 2 days ago. 165V+ 170Q, 4.5 AW. Should I retake to be more competitive in top 10? wordy version: international student but undergrad at US. My advisor who served as our school’s adcom chair last year and another professor said 4.5 is ok. But just asked a third professor, very well-known, she seemed a bit concerned. She wrote “since you will be applying with a US undergrad, you might be unlucky and have your folder compared with others that are also from the US and have much better writing. So, for the very top places, it might make a difference” I can do it a second time, but not sure if I can do better in AW, or even the other 2 for a second time. thanks for your help! I love this forum!
  3. Hi, I didn’t do well in my undergraduate Linear Algebra II class and got a B- - mainly because I bombed my final exam. Anyways, I just graduated and am now working as an RA, and have the opportunity to take post-bacc classes at a local university (different form the university I attended). Should I retake Linear Algebra, or should I just leave it and take other classes like stochastic processes or the statistics version of Linear regressions? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! :)
  4. Linear Algebra original grade: C Multivariable Calc original grade: P IB Math (calc): taken in high school (don't even recall my grade...A or B Just took "Linear Algebra and Real Analysis": A- Should I retake a standalone Linear Algebra course? Should I go back and take undergraduate Calc 2 & Differential Eqs? At this point is it sufficient to just retake Multivariable Calculus? Also- Micro theory: B+ Macro theory: C+ Should I retake Macro or Micro? These were both the 'more advanced' versions of micro and macro available to undergrads but this is not necessarily clear from the course names.
  5. Hi, I currently have two options: I have a W in Operations Research (withdrew for multiple reasons). So I could retake this class, or choose to take Advanced Probability. Which option do you think I should take? (I wish I could take both but their lecture times overlap). It would be great if you could let me know what your thoughts are, and thanks!
  6. Hi guys, I just took my GRE and received Q: 167 and V: 155. As far as I have heard, verbal does not matter much and 155 shouldn't matter much; correct me if I'm wrong please. I know 167 for quant gets me into the door but nothing exceptional. So I was wondering if I should retake the GRE and try to receive a higher score on quant? I have solved several ETS powerprep full practice exams and thought today's quant sections were definitely harder (maybe because I was nervous and etc). So I think I would be able to get a higher score if I retake it. How do you guys think? Should I just get over it and focus on SOPs and my research (I am doing summer research with two professors)? I am going for top 15-40 econ PhD programs. Thanks for any input!
  7. Hey all, I've been really excited about my GRE scores since seeing the 'unofficial' scores when I finished but was disappointed with my AWA that I just received tonight. Verbal: 168 Quant: 167 AWA: 4 To give a bit of context this is overall improvement from when I took it last year: Verbal: 161 Quant: 163 AWA: 4.5 I plan to apply broadly to the top 30 programs since I'm coming out of an LAC with the knowledge that I may have to take an RA position if I have no luck in my first run with applications. Should I think about retaking because of the AWA? Thanks!
  8. Hi everyone, I was wondering if it is possible to only take the quant section when retaking the GRE. I've only written it once, and had (V=160-165/Q=160-165/AWA=4.0). I'm actually okay with the V and AWA scores, but I really need to improve my Q score. Do admission committees for Econ PhD care if you send both scores, but with a second try with only scores for Q? Cheers,
  9. Hey guys! I just took the GRE and I am not exactly pleased with my score, because upon lurking through this forum, it seems as if I would need at least a 166 to be considered for Oxford's Msc in Economics for Development. Scores: 158V/160Q/No Writing Score yet And just to show a bit of my profile: GPA: 3.74 overall, 3.91 Econ and Math only, top 1% of my batch, Magna Cum Laude. Uni: Top 2 in the Philippines (interchanges with the other Uni a lot for 1st and 2nd). Research Experience: Undergraduate thesis work, Feasibility study for a remote island in my country, RA during one summer, RA for 2 big studies in development from an Oxford grad professor, and currently a Research Associate for an esteemed think tank in my country working on numerous development projects. Notable awards: Named one of the top 10 economic students in my country. I'm afraid my GRE score won't even get me considered, should I retake the GRE? is it too low for an Msc in Economics in a tier 1 uni in the UK?
  10. Hello all, i just finished my gmat exam and i managed to get a 680, (42Q 59%, 41V 92%). I know my math score sucks majorly, i did my undergrad at northwestern in engineering and i got a 3.14 gpa, and now i work at an engineering firm doing lots of analytical work. do you guys think i should retake and improve my math or just apply and hot for the best?
  11. Hi everyone, I took the GRE biochem exam in October 2009 and got a 97%, next year i am applying for PhD (so around september-october 2011) and i was wondering whether i should take the exam again or not. I know the results are valid for 5 years, but i wonder do universities have an incline on relying on more recent tests? Please let me know
