My Target Scores

  1. Hi - I am wondering if universities have a preference for GRE v/s GMAT for a PhD application in Management / Organizational Behavior. Most universities say they accept either, while some universities explicitly say they prefer the GRE. However, most of the folks on these forums seem to have answered the GMAT. Any thoughts on this?
  2. Hello! My dream is to get my PhD in Accounting (I am interested in experimental and archival research related to financial disclosures, non-GAAP measures and SOX management) and attend a school like the University of Washington, USC, UT Austin or UC Illinois. I have a good background (I think) except for my GMAT score. - Undergrad dual degree BBA in Marketing and BS in Accounting (3.8 GPA) - CPA - 4 years at Deloitte in external audit serving one of our largest clients - 2 years in Internal Audit Manager at a Fortune 100 company - Genuine passion for research and super driven individual!!! - GMAT: 690 (Q47 V38) I am wondering if anyone knows if GMAT cutoffs at this caliber of schools is a real thing. I've heard rumors that the cutoff is 700 but with the applications due in December I'm not sure that I can realistically restudy in less than a month and get higher than a 700. I will definitely try but want to know my options if it doesn't work out. Please help!!!!!!!
  3. How to Solve: LCM, GCD and Properties of LCM and GCD Hi All, I have recently uploaded a Video on YouTube to discuss LCM and GCD in detail. Following is covered in the video: What is LCM and how to find LCM of 2 or more numbers using three methods. What is GCD and how to find GCD of 2 or more numbers using three methods. • Listing Out Multiples • Common Division Method • Prime Factorization Method How to find LCM and GCD of Exponents and Fractions. Properties of LCM and GCD Prop 1: LCM of 0 and any number does not exist • LCM ( 0 , a ) = Does not exist Prop 2: GCD of 0 and any number is equal to the number itself. (Because all whole numbers are factors of 0. So, a will be also be a factor of 0.) • GCD ( 0 , a ) = a Prop 3: LCM of 1 and any number is equal to the number itself • LCM ( 1 , a ) = a Prop 4: GCD of 1 and any number is equal to 1 • GCD ( 1 , a ) = 1 Prop 5: Product of two numbers = Product of their LCM and GCD • a*b = LCM(a,b) * GCD(a,b) Prop 6: LCM of two numbers is always a multiple of their GCD • LCM(a,b) = GCD(a,b) * k [where k is an integer] Prop 7: LCM of two numbers always lies between the larger of the two numbers and the product of those two numbers • Larger (a,b) Prop 8: GCD of two numbers is always smaller than or equal to the smaller of those two numbers • GCD (a,b) Prop 9: LCM of two numbers is equal to the larger of the two numbers when one number is multiple of other • LCM(a,b) = Larger(a,b) => either a is a multiple of b or b is a multiple of a Prop 10: LCM of two numbers is equal to the product of those two numbers when the numbers are co-prime • LCM(a,b) = a*b => a and b are co-prime numbers Co-prime numbers are numbers which have only one factor in common (i.e. 1) Prop 11: GCD of two numbers is equal to the smaller of the two numbers when one number is multiple of other • GCD(a,b) = Smaller(a,b) => either a is a multiple of b or b is a multiple of a Prop 12: GCD of two numbers is 1 when the numbers are co-prime • GCD(a,b)=1 => a and b are co-prime numbers Prop 13: All numbers can be written as a multiple of their GCD • a and b can be written as a multiple of their GCD • a = GCD(a,b) * k [where k is an integer] • b = GCD(a,b) * t [where t is an integer] Prop 14: All multiples of LCM are divisible by the numbers whose LCM we have calculated • Multiples of LCM(a,b) will be divisible by both a and b Prop 15: a + b and a -b will always be divisible by GCD(a,b) • a+bGCD(a,b)=k[where k is an integer] • a−bGCD(a,b)=t [where t is an integer] Sample Word Problems: Prob 1: Joe has 12 A-grade projects and Chris has 18 B-grade projects. They have to divide up the projects into small teams with equal number of projects in each team; each team can have either A-grade project or B-grade project only. If there is no remainder, find the largest possible number of projects in each team. Prob 2: Joe and Chris were each given a piece of wood of equal length. Joe cuts his wood piece into equal lengths of 12 cm, while Chris cuts his wood piece into equal lengths of 18 cm. If there was no remainder in both cases, find the shortest possible length of wood given to them. Prob 3: Two steel pieces of length 340 cm and 408 cm are to be cut into pieces of all the same length without remainder. Find the greatest possible length of the pieces. Solutions: Prob 1: GCD (12,18) =6 Prob 2: LCM(12,18) = 36 Prob 3: GCD(340,408) = 68 Hope it helps!

  5. Hello everybody! As indicated by our username, we are a non-profit organization dedicated to offering free mentoring services for prospective GMAT test-takers, particularly those that come from a background of financial limitations or disadvantage in some way. To date, our program has matched more than 250 mentees with GMAT mentors that have been highly successful in writing the exam. Our organization has been growing rapidly over the past half-year, and as such, we are looking to take our model and expand it to other exams. Being closely related to the GMAT, we thought the GRE would be a good place to start. Having no expertise on the exam, we're looking to bring somebody in to lead the development of this new project. This person would work closely with the existing GMAT Mentors team to bring our model and apply it to the GRE. Please note that this is a volunteer opportunity that may consume anywhere from 3-10 hours per week. You can find more details about us and the role in the attached file (see the last role description), or on our website (found by googling our name)[ATTACH=CONFIG]7269[/ATTACH] Thanks, and if you have any questions feel free to email us at "support@gmatmentors.com" or ask away below!
  6. Hi all, I'm applying this year for Quant Marketing or Marketing Strategy, and I took the GMAT a long time ago (4.5 years) and got 730 (Q50, V40). My profile is not too good, with mediocre UG GPA (unis in my country have very harsh grading tbh) and better grad GPA (Near 4.0 in the US). My target school is around top 20-30, and I'll only apply to 1 or 2 top 10 (just to tell myself I tried :) ). Do you guys think retaking my GMAT to get it up to 51 Q is worth it?
  7. Hi everyone, I have written GMAT as initially, I was planning to only apply to Finance programs. But recently, I am also interested in some of the Econ programs. Are there good Econ programs (M.A./M.S. and Ph.D.) that accepts GMAT and GRE both? Schools that house Econ in their Business school might accept GMAT, but can't find any details of those. Thanks in advance!
  8. Hey guys and girls, I am applying to do a PhD at the University of South Carolina in International Business. Profile: 7 years of professional experience at two fortune 500 global consultancies. Undergrad GPA: 2.5 from the University of SC (Low.. but a long time ago) I have a Master's in Risk Management from Florida State -- William T Hold Scholar, Dean's List - Final GPA 3.53 (Did this while traveling as a consultant 4 nights a week) Currently, I am studying at The London School of Economics for a MSc in Management, Information Systems and Digital Innovation. I will have two Master's and 7 years professional experience at the time of entry. Problem areas: GMAT -- I took the GMAT in 2015, one time, without studying, to get a feel for the test and got a 540. I never studied for it again, applied to FSU and got in -- When applying to the London School of Economics, I did not need to submit my GMAT so I didn't retake it. 540 is obscenely low. I did not have time to retake this test prior to applying to USC. I was working/consulting full time and upon arriving in London my time is better spent working with world class researchers and studying than reviewing for the GMAT. Also, before anyone trolls -- I did buy GMAT study materials and attempted to prepare -- but here at LSE, if any of you have attended, you read nearly 12 hours a day. It's just simply not possible, there's not enough time in the day. What do you guys think? Is this a killer? I've tried my best to articulate this and point towards my profile strengths in my essays.
  9. Hello, I thought that I would post this question here, as I feel the question would have the greatest probability of being answered in this forum. I have been preparing to apply to a Finance PhD program for probably 7 years now. After getting my MBA (state school) and working as a portfolio accountant for about a year, I became a high school math teacher and for the past 6-7 years have taken math courses during the summers at various universities. I have taken cal 1-3 (A,A,B) , linear algebra (B) , ordinary dif eq (C - I know this isnt so good), intro to partial dif eq (B), intro to math proofs (A), intro to real analysis (A), intro to (calculus based) probability (A), mathematical statistics (A), PhD level Microecomic Theory I (T100 state school. We covered optimization, Kuhn - Tucker conditions, equilibrium etc. - We used the Varian grad text) (A), and I have worked on a project as a research assistant for a finance professor (T150 State School). At this point, I feel like my profile is mostly pretty decent, and I am just preparing for the GMAT at this point. So far in my prep, I am getting pretty close to the 700 mark. My two most recent practice tests (MGMT CAT and GMAT Prep) gave me 690 (Q47 V 38) I realize that 700 is usually a cutoff score, but I also know that in finance there is often a pretty high quant cut-off. I see myself having a difficult time getting my quant up to Q50-51, but I feel that Q48-49 is attainable/realistic. My question to anyone who feels confident answering is as follows : will a 700 GMAT with Q48-49 get me desk rejected at a T100 program? My research interests are aligned to empirical corporate finance/corporate governance, but I am also open to behavioral finance (although I know it is rare to find professors who specialize in behavioral finance outside T30). I plan on applying to about 26 programs in the Top 100 including Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, LSU, Tennessee etc. Also any additional input aside from GMAT Quant would be greatly welcomed. Thanks so much.
  10. Hello, would be really appreciative if persons having been through the process would be able to offer suggestions for realistic schools I could apply to with my background. GMAT: 750 - verbal heavy, very verbal heavy EDUCATION: Master in Acct. GPA: 3.8 (very large midwest state university) WORK EXP: 4 or so years, CPA, 'Big Four' and other big companies MATH: Just stats and some finance math classes. RESEARCH INTEREST: pretty set on financial accounting and audit. I have questions I want to explore and have read quite a bit of acct research. Given my GMAT score balance I was thinking experimental research, although archival seems interesting and I have no doubt i could do the math when i get in (im ready to work!!!) i just don't know how they (admission committees) view an unbalanced Q - V split - reading the forums here seems like it's possibly an issue. Both methodologies seem interesting to me. I don't plan on retaking the GMAT. But, yeah, opinion on my prospects would be much appreciated.
  11. Hi all, Any input appreciated! Test Scores (GMAT): 700 (44Q, 41V, 6 AWA, 8 IR) Undergrad GPA: 3.7 at Top 10 Business School in United States Work Experience: 3 years in consulting @ Oracle Concentration Applying to: Strategy Number of Programs Applying to: 8-10 programs in Top 25 Dream Schools: HBS, Stanford, Berkeley, UCLA, USC Have experience in quantitative and analytic research. Have strong written and oral communication skills (should help in writing a top-notch personal statement). Have references from tenured professors from my undergrad business program. Thoughts on my prospects of gaining admission to a top 7, top 15, top 25 program? How many programs should I be applying to and which schools should I be targeting? Is focusing on a higher GMAT my only recourse (this may delay applying until next year)? Best, Neda
  12. Hi, I work as an auditor at a mid-sized public accounting firm in the midwest. Below are my stats from undergrad and GMAT land. I scored a 690, but by split is relatively unfavorable given the weak quant score. Does my profile have a competitive chance to gain admissions to a decent but non elite accounting PhD program such as Purdue, Iowa, Tennessee, Kansas, Missouri, Wisconsin, Florida or Minnesota? My undergrad profile is probably a little underwhelming but I was from a small town and went to a large state school with the singular goal of get a degree, get a job, stay out of the rents' basement. I'd like to be an accounting professor because the role allows for so much more creativity in teaching others and learning about interesting accounting/financial reporting topics. Undergrad GPA: 3.5-3.6 GMAT: 690 - 44 Q, 40 V CPA Exams: Passed, licensed Work Experience: Auditor 2 years
  13. I recently took my GMAT after some on/off studying for a few months, and I'm wondering if I should re-take it? Is it worth the extra effort? As I mentioned when I posted before, I am planning on applying during the 2019 cycle, so I still have quite a bit of time, so I could definitely fit in a re-take for the GMAT. I scored a 720 (49Q, 40V, 6 IR, 6 AWA) on the test. I'm planning on applying to the top schools for their Accounting PhD programs. Just to summarize some stats about myself for people who didn't see my past posts, I am at UofT, and I'm finishing up my fourth year. If all goes well, I should end with a 3.92 GPA (realistic, considering the courses I'm taking next year). The main reason I would want to re-take it is to increase my Q to either a 50 or 51, as the percentile for a 49 is quite low. I have taken some math courses throughout my Undergrad, which include: Calculus I & II (92%), Statistics (91%), Linear Algebra (96%), Intro to Proofs (91%), Multivariable Calc. (90%), Real Analysis (TBA) So, I just thought I'd get some opinions on whether or not I should re-take my GMAT? I know that if I study for another month or so, I can at least get it up to 730-740 (anything beyond that would probably have to do with how lucky I am in terms of the types of questions they give me). Thanks in advance!
  14. Hi all, I will be applying to business schools this year in strategy. I am deciding which test - between GRE and GMAT - I should choose. As I am not a native English speaker, I am not confident that I would get a good score, say, 4.5 in AWA in GRE. However, I heard that PhD committee in strategy values the score in writing very much. If this is the case, would GMAT be more suitable for my profile? I appreciate everyone for your comments.
  15. Discount Code: KB490 Hey guys! If you use the above discount code, you will get $25 off any Testmasters GMAT, LSAT, or GRE prep course. I just took a Testmasters GRE prep course, and it improved my score immensely. I originally scored a 155 verbal, 153 quantitative, and 4.0 analytical writing. After the course, I took the GRE and scored a 165 verbal, 162 quantitative, and 5.0 analytical writing. The boost in my scores allowed me to apply to more competitive programs. I highly recommend Testmasters! I used them for SAT prep, too, back in the day and scored a 2320. In my opinion, their prep courses are worth the cost. It will pay off in the long run!
  16. Are there any programs out there for people with average gre scores? I don't know why I'm not doing as well as I should. GMAT 2009: 590 GMAT 2017: 440 GRE 2018: 153Q 143V Anyone out there in a similar situation who got into some phd programs in econ/finance?
  17. Hi~ Thanks for reading this:) Hope you will have a nice day today. In short, I got: - strong gpa in undergrad and grad with several scholarships - two conference papers (First-authored and co-authored) - IELTS 7.5 - over 15 months part-time research assistant experience - exchange experience with a research project - HOWEVER, A POOR GMAT (640) I have wasted some chances before in taking GMAT and now I only got 2 chances left this year. I do not know whether I should take it again in Jan. My 640 was obtained in Sep. I didnt work on GMAT since Sep (because of heavy school work) and I do not know whether I can get a higher without practices. As it is almost the deadline for most of the schools, I do not know whether I should still apply with this profile. Anyone can suggest any schools for me with this profile, please? or should I apply it next year? P.S. Marketing- Consumer Behavior
  18. Hello everyone, I am hoping to get some insight on how to proceed with my goal of getting into an Accounting PhD program. I know I don't have the best profile right now, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to improve my stats before applying. About me: 30 year old female Bachelor's in Accounting - right around 3.0 GPA (3.4 Business GPA) at a large state university Bachelor's in Psychology - around 3.5-3.6 major GPA (will have to go back and calculate) 2 semesters of research experience, but it was 7-8 years ago and was in the field of Psychology I have not taken the GMAT but when I do I'm aiming for 700+ 3-4 years of work experience, both in public and in the healthcare industry No CPA license As you can see, nothing about me is great (yet!). So my question is, what would be the best way to proceed? Should I go for my Master's and try to get as high of a graduate GPA and GMAT score as possible? Should I skip the Master's and just try to get a great GMAT? Should I try to get my CPA first? I know this isn't a requirement but maybe it would make up for the low GPA? I should note that I am not necessarily going for a top-tier school, as I know those are likely out of my reach regardless of what I do in the next couple of years. I just know that I enjoyed my experience in research and I like the idea of academia rather than working in Accounting for the rest of my career. Thanks in advance for the help!
  19. I'm just curious to know what gmat score I should aim for. I'm planning to apply to Phd Finance programs next year.
  20. AWA is one of the crucial areas for your GRE/GMAT exam preparation. Biggest problems students face is, they wanted to know how good their passage is and how good others are writing the answer for the given passage. So to solve this problem, have developed an open place where you can see other people answers and you share your reviews to others , and you can get reviews from other students and experts. Check out this link for AWA peer reviews , GroupsOne - AWA Open Hub Will be posting topics every day. To get daily updates , you can join my facebook group from here. https://www.facebook.com/groups/442774586057556/ Reach out to me if you have any doubts.
  21. I will not make this post long by outlining my journey rather I'll share some tips which I think will benefit my peers here. Before I do that, I must the members here who have inspired and guided me and many others on this forum. God Bless you guys! It's been more than 1.5 years since I came across this forum and though I started my preparation only 4 months ago, I think that this forum was instrumental as now and then I'd keep visiting the forum for my diet of inspiration and wisdom. Anyway, here are my thoughts for what they are worth 1. Always start with a Diagnostic test before you prepare : I think this is very important. When you have a diagnostic score, you have a benchmark from where you can take your preparation forward otherwise you will have no way of knowing how much progress you have made. I started with a 680(V-34, Q-48) so needed to work on Verbal more. 2. Study Material : Verbal: Before I started studying, I rated myself in each of the three verbal areas based on my performance on diagnostic tests. These were the scores I had given to me. SC-4/10, CR-8/10 RC- 6/10 SENTENCE CORRECTION was really a bummer for me. The day-to-day English which we use is a bit different from what is tested on the GMAT. For example, for a long time I couldn’t digest the fact that “considered as” could be an incorrect idiom on the GMAT. Also it isn’t very rare(or rather is very common) for us to say “He’s the person that helped me” which is wrong on the GMAT. So learning the rules is important. For SC, nothing beats Aristotle SC Grail and Manhattan SC. Combine them with OG13 SC and you should be all set. CRITICAL REASONING: For CR, CR Grail was golden. CR though came quite intuitively to me and in fact, I loved doing CR questions as they were fun. Just practiced questions and learnt the strategies to tackle various question types. READING COMPREHENSION: For RC, I was neither very good nor not very bad. Doing well on RC is all about having the patience to read a passage and be interested in it. It’s about developing mental stamina which I developed through practice. In all, I did around 55-60 passages in groups of 3-5 passages in a day from OG13 passages and Aristotle RC Grail. I never used the note taking method suggested my some test prep companies because it just diverted my attention from the passage. QUANT: I rated myself a 8/10 on Quant after the diagnostic test. All I needed was practice. I personally think that as good as it is for Verbal, OG13 disappoints bigtime on Quant. Only the last 50 questions in OG13 were good . The first 3/4th of the questions were too easy and unless you’re not sailing in the 400-600 zone on the GMAT, you will not see them on the actual test. Manhattangmat's Advanced Quant Guide is a great book I think. After finishing this book and OG, I practiced questions from Aristotle PS Booster and DS Boosters which i think gave me the much needed practice. 3. Study Time- 4 months is more than sufficient. Initially, I had planned for 3 months but since I wanted to do well I thought it’s better to wait for a month more and then take the exam 4. Practice Tests- I used only two sources- ManhattanGMAT tests and GMATPREP tests for practicing. I highly recommend taking the GMATPREPs twice. Do not get disheartened by the difficulty level of the MGMAT Quant sections; you will not see that difficult questions on the GMAT. However, I think that I gained a lot from analyzing such questions as you tend to build your concepts well. 5. Integrated Reasoning- Did not bother too much about this after most of the schools announced formally that they will ignore the IR scores this season. Maybe they’ll consider it next year but I’m no way waiting for another year to apply to schools. It want to be entering an MBA program by Fall 2013. So instead of spending a lot of time on IR, I spent more time on Verbal and Quant. 6.Test day- Irrespective of what scores you have been getting on your practice exams, you will feel the pressure on the actual test. I tried taking the burden of performing off from my shoulders and I think this made a lot of difference. I thought to myself that my only focus will be to enjoy doing the questions as they appear on screen. GMAT is not anyway the end of life. 7. Luck - More often than not,we humans tend to attribute our success to ourselves-and forget to thank our luck. Though I got a 750, I may well have gotten a 700-710. So I must thank God for blessing with the fruits of my hardwork. I think that it’s time to grab a beer and take a much needed vacation. Finally, it’s also the time when I’ll reveal to my colleagues and boss in my office about my MBA plans. I, firstly, wanted to get a good score and then tell them about my plan instead of doing it the other way round. Will be around for a while to take any questions. All the best to you all

  23. If anyone is looking to sign up for Veritas Prep and wants $100 referral credit, please send me a message and I will send you a referral email. I took the Veritas On-Demand course (which for me was $850) and loved it. Highly recommend Veritas to everyone, but specifically the On-Demand course for people who are independent learners and get frustrated w/ in person training courses being side tracked by one or two people asking 8th grade level questions :-D
  24. Hi guys, I had been preparing for the GMAT over the past few months and recently appeared for it and bombed it. Now I feel the GMAT is not my type of animal and considering giving GRE a shot. I've gone through the MGMAT series of GMAT books and am planning to sign up for Magoosh to help with my GRE prep. This is my first time with the GRE and frankly I don't know much about it. I'd appreciate if you guys could guide on the things that I should know about the GRE coming from a GMAT prep and also what books I'd need to prepare for the GRE. Do I need to buy the Manhattan GRE series of books? Or would the knowledge I have from the GMAT combined with Magoosh be enough for the GRE prep? Furthermore, how much time do you think it'd take me to prepare for the GRE considering I've already prepared and appeared for the GMAT? My target score for GRE is 326+. Thanks!
  25. "In order for any work of art---whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song---to have merit, it must be understandable to most people." Whether the merit of any work of art like film ,literature , sculpture or a song would help people to find good and understandable work, or not. I concede with the statement that the merit of art work is useful for people to find good work easily. However, the main problem exist here , who will give merit to art work?. In Today's world, the merit of art is done by the critics. In many aspects' they do great work, but how can we say evaluation and review is based on their true intention. Many cases great work undergone due to weaker review and evaluation. For instance, all film is reviewed by critics and give rating to movies on the behalf of critics, but lots of movies who gain low rating still do very good business. In addition to the argument, the critics should give feedback instead of criticism, it will help artists to hone their skills. They will evaluate their performance in their latest work on behalf feedbacks. It will not only help in improvement ,but also suggest them what people are excepting from their work. In history many work who firstly disapproved by critics, but after some time they became so popular gained worldwide acclaim. For instance, Shakespeare’s, all time great writer ,firstly his work was disapproved because it was not in accord with neo classical movement style, but later people readied that work and Shakespeare became one of the great artists. In sum, I concur that the merit of art work is necessary, but still their is problem who will do proper evaluation without any partiality. So it is best to give feedback to artist instead of criticism.
