My Target Scores

  1. Hi everyone, Could someone rate and provide feedback on my issue essay? The topic is from the ETS issue pool. Educational institutions have a responsibility to dissuade students from pursuing fields of study in which they are unlikely to succeed. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position. In the world of globalisation and amalgam of eclectic cultures, there are a lot of courses available in universities for the students to study. Needless to say, with freedom of choice to pursue these courses comes the limitation of whether one will be able to succeed to study and make a living out of it. Educational institutions should deter students from opting for courses in which they’re unlikely to succeed, because of factors pertaining to efforts and opportunity cost. A student’s diligence and efforts more or less determine the grades, and in a way how he’ll be succeeding in that field. Moreover, if the student decides to switch fields, or wishes to delve into a new unorthodox and challenging path, the chance of failure is relatively less as compared to someone who is frivolous and remiss. For instance, Chetan Bhagat, a renowned novelist, comes from an engineering and a management background, graduating from the top schools of India with stellar grades. His persistence in whatever field he wanted to get into led him to his pedestal of success. Though top Indian universities only focus on a major theme: IITs and IIMs emphasising on engineering and management respectively, if he had an opportunity to shift to a major apart from engineering, he would have a good chance at succeeding. Therefore, someone having bad grades would be a clear indication that it wouldn’t be prudent to allow him to change his field of study, since he won’t be able to put in the required efforts to make a difference. Even if the person has a good academic record, this shouldn’t be a reason for him to be allowed to change majors. The future is full of uncertainty, and establishing a good financial background at the earliest would help the person live a life without stress. The opportunity cost in the future associated with changing majors should be considered, since it could happen that the chances of succeeding in it are negligible. A good example would be the art of filming. For someone to major in Computer Science would be a wise call currently because of the abundance of job opportunities. However, if someone makes a decision to shift to filming, just because of the “coolness” factor, or maybe in an attempt to mimic his favourite director, it’s not going to be a good decision. The ratio of people succeeding in computer science and getting a good paying job to the total graduates far exceeds the ratio for filming. Thus, with a foresight of the future, if universities allow students to change into unorthodox majors, then it wouldn’t a solid economic foundation of the nation, since a lot of people living stressful lives would hamper the development of the country. Someone could say that one should always study things according to their call, because happiness and emotional stability is the most important thing. However, the importance of having a good financial stability far exceeds the requirements of satisfying emotions, since even if someone is unhappy, he or she can use the ability to spend money on things so that you can improve your life in different ways possible. Thus, this concludes that educational institutions shouldn’t allow students to take up fields of study in which they’re unlikely to succeed.
  2. Apart from major subjects, minor courses are also important for proper education. Because it helps students to prepare themselves for future obstacle and leadership. Humanity courses will certainly benefit in the future. In upcoming days when these students are going to enter into their career life, they have to lead a team or a group of people. Without humanity courses they are unable to lead the team or group. Also, they have to work with various kind of people, without the help of humanity courses it is not possible to create a good relationship with them. Understanding the ambience of the work life is a key element for building a career. For example, mark jackerberg was a computer science student and jeff bejos was a business studies student. Now they own a company and work with a lot of people. Without the help of humanity courses, it is not possible to deal with their co-workers. But, as humanity courses is not major courses in science and business studies, Students sometime feel annoying to do this type of courses during their study period which can hamper their education. It's the duty of the teachers to persuade them to the importance of the humanities. There is an axiom that 'knowledge is power' and any knowledge is beneficial in real life in many ways. So, depriving a course is unintelligible.
  3. TOPIC: Understanding the past is of little use to those in current positions of leadership. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. ESSAY: A successful leader is the one who can motivate and unitedly lead his/her team to success. A path full of failures and successes leads a person to zenith. Before being called a leader, the person must have faced hardships. Learning from ones own mistakes is crucial to avoid them from happening again. Just like in case of a corporate manager or team leader ; understanding and analysing the past is important to lead the team to their heyday. Maybe during his/her own duration of being under someone else's leadership, the person came across unexpected results, or faced conflicts with the team members. Remembering how the issues were solved during that time and understanding that the same could aid during the struggles of someone relying on your leadership could greatly help managing the things at hand. Moreover, it is said that it is fine to make imstakes but not to commit same mistake repeatedly. This can be made possible only if we learn from our past and decode the scenario well enough not to make the same mistake again. If a person in currect position of leadership will have a reign full of fallacies, then how is a team, that is supposed to be inspired from that person, work righteously? I agree that with times, scenarios and problem statements drastically change. This could lead to rendering the past learnings of no help. For example, with expanding semicondustor industry, the technology nodes at which engineers are working have been changing rapidly. A person in current position of leadership might have faced 180nm technology node and related technical issues during his regime of learning as a junior employee; whereas a person working under his leadership now might face issues on 7nm technology nodes. This might make it difficult for the manager/ team leader to resolve issues swiftly inspite of being cautious in implementing learnings from the past. But, at the same time, the understanding that such issues continue as hurdles and recalling how human resources must be inspired to implement their academics to practical scenarios, a team lead can comfortably cross any obstacle. Since the beginning of his/her regime a person crosses many hurdles. Learning from past experiences can greatly help a person lead a wise and properly managed life - be it at work or at home.
  4. Prompt: Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. youth are building blocks for any nation. They are open minded, willing to experiment, try new things. It is important to analyze the trends of its youth to understand contempory culture. But I do not agree completly with the author. We can not ignore old people while understanding any culture as they and their behavior have huge impact on young people. First, Youth learn more from society and surrounding. Every youth receives cultural values from his parents. So in that way they are the blue print of the society. They reflect same thing which they receive in home, school and neighbourhood. For example if you meet an indian guy he will greet you by saying namaste in contract to a chiness guy who will welcome you by saying ni hao. Also, Youth mind is very open to try new things and experiment. They keep themselves up to date with current trends. They notice people around and based on respect and fame others receiving they follow them. Also movies have huge impact on their mind. After globlization, they come to know about new things every day. They know culture of other cuntry poeple because of internet and other communication mediuam and youth eagerness force them to experiment. For example, wearing batman tshirt is common trend amaong youth accross countries. However, we can not ignore old people while understanding contemporary culture. As we all live in era of globlization and whole wolrd has infulence on us. Being youth, we seek for instant name, fame and glory as our mind is not matured enough. So what ever is trending in one country youth same would be trending in other country youth as era of social media and internet has brought everyone together with vile. Where as old people continuous the tradition. For example, if you see youth of india you will not be able to understand indian culture as all youth are driven by western culture and our parents are actually carrying actual indian culture with them. Therefore, it is required to see trends among youth but at the same time we can not ignore older people to understand contemprary culture. 5. Please provide me a review about the shortcoming in my essay. I believe this is an average level of essay, but I fear it may be worse. Please help me improve the essay for my GRE exam. Prompt: Governments should offer a free university education to any student who has been admitted to a university but who cannot afford the tuition “Equality manifests itself in education” – Mr. A P J Abdul Kalam states during the convocation at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University. The government should provide aid to students who cannot afford the tuition at the university. This provides a level playing field amongst the rich and the poor sections of the society. Since such programs allow the weaker sections of the society get an opportunity to pursue higher levels of education, these programs also help in the overall development of the society. Students admitted into reputed university should be provided necessary financial aid by the government. A student with a keen interest in geophysics may be deprived the opportunity to study in a world class university due to the lack of financial resources. This opportunity is later passed on to a student who has scored lower marks but has to financial resources to pay the university tuition. If the poorer student gets financial aid from the government, he/she would be able to compete equally with the richer guy, ensuring that the opportunity is passed only to the deserving student. Also, the universities can make unbiased decisions in selecting the candidates since they do not have to consider the financial capabilities of the candidates. This reduces the financial discrimination in the education sector, and ensures that the right opportunity reaches the right candidate. However, it may be countered that a lot of financing options are provided by banks to students in the form of educational loans. These loans although are a substantial financial assistance to the students admitted into a university, they are provided based on the salaries or the credit scores of the student’s parents. Thus, these loans end up being beneficial only to the richer students and the poorer students remain outside the purview of these loans. Additionally, by providing the poor with the opportunity to better education, the government indirectly aids the development of the poorer section of the society. These students getting world class education would be better able to represent their communities in global forums and ensure that the pain of the poor in discussed at all levels of governance. Thus, government providing financial aid to students admitted into universities would go a long way in developing the society and ensure equal opportunities for the poor.
  6. Scandals are useful because they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position. A reveal of something that is considered unpleasant or inappropriate by the public is called a scandal. Scandals are most of the time are not useful for the society since they might cause lack of trust in government and do not generally lead to successful reforms. When we talk about scandals, often times we relate it to politics. In terms of politics, scandals are not useful for the society because they might lead to loss of trust in government and political process. For example, a member of the parliament might very well vote on a policy issue based on his/her economic concerns and bargain with corporate institutions. A news report that reveals this scandal, however, might result in voters generalizing all other members and losing trust in politics. The loss of trust in politics is a great danger for democracies because when people think that they do not have the power to direct politics, they might refuse to vote and this would ultimately lead to the collapse of democracy. Just as scandals are a threat for democracy and trust in political systems, they also do not open new ways for reforms rather they make these scandalous acts mundane. A good example of that is the political crisis that is currently going on in Uganda. A unanimous Twitter account has released the documents that prove the corruption in government. The government did not punish those who committed these acts and now the public sees this massive scandal as an intrinsic part of a government. Although these two convincing facts tell us that scandals are not useful tools that can achieve big things for society, scandals sometimes can increase the awareness of society. The Snowden case is a perfect example for this. Edward Snowden who worked for CIA previously has released documents showing the daily intervention of government in our private lives. Although it was criticized by some, it has helped citizens to know their rights and how the government exercises its power. A scandal should not be considered useful because it leads to loss of trust in political process and does not bring new reforms or good outcomes. One might argue that a scandal increases our awareness but what they take from us is bigger than what they give.
  7. Topic: "One can best understand the most important characteristics of a society by studying its major cities." This argument is completly true with respect to past civilization but it will not hold true in the present context. My position is predicated on modern society, most of which has neutral characteristics due to effects of globalization. Hence, its better to study characteristics of rural backdrop to best understand the characteristics of a modern society. In the later stage of essay I will concede that in order to understand the political and administrative characteristics of a society its better to study major cities of the society. In recent years, due to policies supporting globization and with convenient transport facilities, the major metropoliton cities have people with roots from different societies and its difficult to understand a society by studying major cities with people from different origin. For example, by studying the people in Paris its very difficult to understand French society. Modern Paris has become home for people from different parts of the world with differnt cultural and ethnical background; and its difficult to extrapolate and understand French society by going through information about the people in paris. Adding on to the fact that rural areas are limitedly affected by globalization, countries like India has majority of its population -- about 70% -- living in rural areas. Rural areas will have most of the people with their origin mapped to the same area. These areas, majority being agricultural, along with feeding the population in major cities, will mostly conserve society's customs and rituals. Hence in order to understand a society its good to study its rural population. Excavations in Pakistan, majorly in places which was previously Harappa and Mahenjodharo, has given a good insite about Indus Valley civilization. This is true because the population was restricted to a confined outline and was not affected by popuation of any other civilization of the same time. Harappa and Mahenjodharo being the major city gave a good insite about the Indus population. Since the key political and administrative activities take place in major metropoliton cities of a society, I concede that in-order to get a good understanding about the adminstrative and political characteristics of a societies its best to study its major cities. Although its difficult to get full insight about a society by constraining ourselfs to either major cities or its rural backdrop, Its better to study rural population to best understand a society.
  8. People who make decisions based on emotion and justify those decisions with logic afterwards are poor decision makers. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. People who make decisions based on emotion and use logic afterward to justify those decisions are poor decision makers. This statement holds true because justifying an action to yourself is much easier once the action has already been taken. Once you have already acted, you have a bias towards justifying the action instead of thinking through the action logically and considering both sides. Justifying an action to yourself isn't difficult. There are many ethics scenarios where this comes into play. For example, you steal a snack from work because you're hungry and you don't have too much extra money. You initially make the decision based on a feeling - you're hungry. This emotional action, once completed, is easy to justify. You buy things from your workplace all the time, and they get plenty of your money. You're working for them, after all, and they'll never notice on measly snack missing. You don't have much money, and those corporations have tons of it. There are many lines of reasoning that could be used to justify such a thoughtless, hastily made decision. But, the reality is that you could very well lose your job over such a decision. If you had really and sincerely stopped to consider both sides, logically, before you had taken the snack, you may have come up with some very compelling counterpoints. Your job is your main source of income, is one snack worth losing it? You, like most people, have a moral stance firmly against stealing. Is this case really different? Or were you simply using your emotions to make a decision that wasn't all that wise, after all? This defines the heart of the problem with justifying a decision after it is made - you are much more inclined to try to think about what was right with what you did than what was wrong with it. You have forfeited the chance to make a decision based completely on the rational consideration of options and consequences. Another scene where the statement rings true is this: someone at school, or work, is taunting you. They're making you very upset, and they don't seem to care. In your anger, you swing at them and hit them. After the decision has been made, reasons for it are easy enough to find. The person was taunting you and didn't care about your feelings. You were quite upset with them and it seemed a blow was the only way to get them to stop. But, again, when examined too closely, the logic falls apart. The reasons are valid enough, but if logic were used from the beginning, some very strong cons of striking are present. You could be punished at your school or workplace for fighting, and likely you will be. You could have chosen to walk away, or ignore the person, or report them to a supervisor. When thinking logically, there are many choices that could, and should, have been made before striking someone, and yet it is also easy to justify a blow once that act has been committed. You could argue that those who decide based on emotions are still using logic in their justifications, and this would be a correct assumption. The issue with this is not that they are not using logic, rather it is that their logic is inherently flawed. There is an unignorable bias that is present when justifying an action that you have already taken rather than thinking the through a course of action you are yet to take. You are always inclined to find the best, most logical reasoning to explain an action you took out of emotion, rather than finding the logical reasons you should not have done it. When you use logic in decision making before the decision has been made, it gives a chance to consider both sides equally, without the overwhelming presence of bias to justify an action already done. Those who respond to situations with emotion and only later justify these responses using rational thinking are poor decision makers because using logic after a decision has already been reached creates and unmistakable bias towards logic favoring your decision. Scenarios in which this rings true are many, and the best thing for you to do would be to use logic before arriving at a decision - to try to put your emotions aside for a time and logically think through your options and consequences. This is the first GRE essay I've ever written and I want to see where you might think I'm at. Thanks!!
  9. Kindly give feedback on below essay Issue task: In any field those in power should step down after five years Reason : The easiest path to success for any enterprises is revitalization through new leadership. More the experience more the banality. The success of any enterprise is contingent upon the leader and his views. In any field the leaders should step down after five years giving way for the new leadership for enterprise success. The leaders in the same enterprise for more than 5 years lead to want of new ideas, new innovations as they continue to base their ideas on those ideas they put into reality years back. Enterprises which are not growing will vanish one day. Barack Obama in his first term of presidency, implemented many ideas like health care. It continued in his second term too. Although there was no problem with the health care there are better ideas out there which can make health care cheaper and forthcoming to all citizens of America. The new idea may cut the tax rates completely for medicines. Some part of the tax collected may be specially reserved to pay the medical cost of those who are in need, instead of having insurance. Implementing this idea will certainly costs less than the existing health care. As the leaders get more experienced, the surrounding and the leader become languid. With only quotidian work the enterprises become stagnant. The company Mozart Inc 's revenue has been declining year by year. Hence the board members of the company changed their leadership recently owing to no growth in the industry. Now the new leader, Joy is much more enthusiastic in his work as the company is new for him. Also the employees have started working hard under the direction of Joy. Subsequently the revenue of the company has increased by two fold in the same quarter.A change is needed once in a while whether it is a small startup or a big corporation so that the company grows in new direction. With the same leader in place for years the venality of the leader grows. The force under him becomes unhappy causing them to abandon the enterprise. No workforce and no money for the enterprise will make the enterprise doomed. In India, the chief of political party Congress, Sonia Gandhi became so corrupt that ultimately the citizens of India chose NDA over Congress in their 2014 election. The congress was in power for 10 years and now it is counting its last day. If the leadership was changed in India then, the citizens would not have had days without no hope. There is always an exception in everything whether it is the existing leadership or new leadership. The new leader of an enterprise might be naive and could make the enterprise utter flop. Hence sometimes experienced leaders know what is best for the enterprise and can take it a way forward. In any field there are leaders with more than 5 years experience and there are leaders who are young to the organization. The success of the organization depends on how the leader takes the organization forward. Revitalization might be required if the enterprise is stagnant, giving way for the new bud to grow up and take care of the organization and the cycle continues.
  10. A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position. Essay : Education plays an important role in students life. The earliest education system to which one is introduced is school system. In schools the most prominent way of teaching students is to follow curriculum. These curriculums will guide the learning process of student. There might be different curriculums in a country but the studentswill be benifitted from same national curriculum until they enter college. Firstly, having same curriculum throughout the nation will give fair and equal chance for all the students in the nation. In countries like India, each state has its own curriculum. These curriculums are different in different aspects ranging from subjects to level of difficulty. If a student from a state wants to take national level entrance exam for prestigious institutions like IIT, then that student has to take extra coaching to cover the material which are not included in his curriculum. This gives a handicap to students who are not studying the same curriculum as others. So if there is a single curriculum at national level then every student will have equal opportunity and chance at these type of exams. In Second, having same curriculum throughout the nation will make easy for students to move from one state to other state of the country. If different states have different curriculums then the student who has moved to different state will have difficulty in adapting to new state's curriculum. In addition along with students, teachers can also move from one state to other and start continuing teaching without any additional training . If curriculums are different then the teachers needed to be trained for specific curriculum to teach. If teachers relocate to a new place with different curriculum then they might have to do additional training or they might lose their job. In countries like India where each state has its own language and culture, it is difficult to have single curriculum. In these states there are curriculums which are taught in their local languages and they can't be made national level curriculums as people speak and write different languages. In situations like these, having single curriculum for entire nation doesn't work . Even if the content of the subject is same and is taught in different languages it will be difficult to have same curriculum as local states include their own languages as part of curriculum. In conculsion, a nation should have same curriculum for all students until they enter college. Having same curriculum gives students equal chance to learn and grow. It will also help students to move to different parts of the country and continue their education with ease.In countries where it is not possible to have same national curriculum they should work towards establish some common ground to give fair chance for all of their students.
  11. Hi everybody! Please judge my essay (Analyze an argument) Promt "A recent study of eighteen rhesus monkeys provides clues as to the effects of birth order on an individual's levels of stimulation. The study showed that in stimulating situations (such as an encounter with an unfamiliar monkey), firstborn infant monkeys produce up to twice as much of the hormone cortisol, which primes the body for increased activity levels, as do their younger siblings. Firstborn humans also produce relatively high levels of cortisol in stimulating situations (such as the return of a parent after an absence). The study also found that during pregnancy, first-time mother monkeys had higher levels of cortisol than did those who had had several offspring". Write a response in which you discuss one or more alternative explanations that could rival the proposed explanation and explain how your explanation(s) can plausibly account for the facts presented in the argument. In this argument, the author shows us the results of the study of eighteen rhesus monkeys in stimulating situations which lead to high levels of cortisol secretions. Also, he/she provides us with a particular situation, in which firstborn humans produces high levels of this hormone. Additionaly, the author gives us supplemental information about femaly monkeys during their first pregnancies. Although the author gives us the results of the study and other supporting information, there is some alternative information that could rival the proposed explanation. First, we should turn our attention to the small sample size of the research. Eighteen rhesus monkeys are insufficient for making a solid conclusion. There are must be more samples. Also, diversity of samples is no less important than quantity. As we know, cortisol is a stress hormone, and it is secreted in order to preserve innate resources of an individual. High levels of the cortisol also appear in the first half of the day, then it falls to lower levels. Stimulation situations must be similar for both humans and monkeys. These can be either an encounter with an unfamiliar monkey/baby or the return of a parent after an absence and experimentation must occur at the same time. In the conclsuion, the author doesn't provide us with suffiecient information about that research. Furhermore, I see no link between cortisol level of mother monkeys and their babies within the argument. And I see no logic in comaring simulating situations between humans and monkeys. Without proper information we can not reach to a conclusion. Sorry for the poor vocabulary and for the grammar. English is not my native language. But I want to pass the GRE anyway:afro: Thank you very much for your time! I really appreciate it! My skype "Kalidaulet"

  13. My Response: With the drastic improvement in technologies and fields, students are left with wide variety of opportunities to select their fields of study. The development in variety of fields, say, from Agriculture to Nano technology has resulted in significant increase in the number of chances for students to pursue their career. The educational institutions where the students are likely to invest many years to get a profound foundation, holds the responsibility for the success of their students. If we take a deep insight of the present situation, the educational system has attained a great improvement. For example, students are provided with range of options from LED classrooms to Online classes. In addition to educational institutions, Internet also has marked its prominent role in developing students career with its availability of information at any time. However, these facilities are not equally distributed leading to reduced percentage in rate of students success. There are rural areas still where the students could not attend classes in proper classrooms. These are partially addressed by many schemes (including free education and food for everyone) introduced by the great Indian Politician Mr. Kamaraj. Indeed the students of rural areas find it difficult to cope up with the current education system. Hence, in this case, the education is not evenly distributed among students to develop their skills. Additionally, the institutions would not be able to produce their best out of students, if the students undergo the constant change in the place of their study. In addition to these problems, donation has become a serious problem which blocks the students with great talent and much aspirations from pursuing it. On the other hand, it is not only the responsibility of educational institutions to help students achieve their goal, but also the parents'. Since, parents play major role in the growth of their children, they hold an important position in craving the future of their children. Moreover, guiding students to achieve their goal, could possibly refer to their freedom to select their field of success. For instance, What if the great player of Indian cricket team, Mr. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, is stopped from pursuing his career in cricket? Well, we all would have lost good player and his great captaincy today. Thus, the students' success in various fields cannot be determined only by the educational institutions while it has many other aspects to be considered. Thanks in advance.
  14. I just got back the results of my first GRE test and I got quite good scores in quantitative and verbal (Q170/V169), but somehow I managed to not do that well on analytical writing (4.0). I should probably also mention that I am not a native speaker, am a rather slow typer, and usually take time to develop arguments before writing them down. My problem is, that some of the MSc.-programs in economics I am applying to have soft cutoffs above that for the AWA section ("most successful applicants have scores above 4.5 ...", etc.), so I am a bit unsure about my results. As most application deadlines end in January, I will most probably have to go with the scores I've got as there will not be enough time to retake the exam. My questions are: - How important are AWA scores in the application process? - Do you think my verbal and my TOEFL iBT score (115) might be able to compensate for my somewhat low AWA score? - Should I mention my TOEFL score in my essay and ask the application committee to consider my AWA score in context, suggesting that I might just have had a bad day? I would hate to have to retake the GRE, as I am happy with my scores in the other sections and don't fancy spending another $205. I know this forum is mainly for PhD- applications, but I have been lurking here for quite some time and would really appreciate your input. Thank you for your help!
  15. Passion has driven ordinary people to achieve extra-ordinary things. It is often the common things which are ubiquitous which when picked up by passionate people, they go out of their way to produces something entirely different and unique. All the great inventions were fueled by passionate hard workers, who thought things in a way that have never been thought before. Such people perform simple things in an artistic way to bring marvelous things of art, literature, start-ups and many more. All the great artists of the world like Picasso, Da Vinci derived their inspiration from common things. It was their sheer compassion which turned ordinary thoughts in to wonders. Story of 'The Last Supper' was widely known across Christian community, but it was passion of arts that propelled this common story to be painted in a way which stood away from rest. Poets like Ravindra Nath Tagore, who won noble laureate in literature, derived his ideas and inspiration from very common and simplistic things. In the contemporary world, with advent of new start-up culture, entrepreneurs are picking up common ideas to build a corporate empire and create a new lifestyle. Mark Zuckerberg started Facebook to connect to his peers over internet, it was a very basic idea and it arose from his campus to satisfy the needs of people to stay connected with other. Currently there are billions of users connected across globe. Founder of famous chain outlet KFC was a complete failure, he had failed several companies and posts. This guy was always passionate about chicken, he knew recipe to make delicious chicken, At the age more than 70, he started his outlet to sell chicken; currently, there are around thousands such outlets all over country. On the other hand, scientific breakthroughs in today’s era happens in sophisticated laboratories around the world not in commonplace things. Over more than 10000 scientists collaborated in Large Hadron Collider, one of most stupendous work, to decipher interrelation between general relativity and quantum mechanics. Like for cure of any deadly disease, it takes tremendous amount of time and collective effort to come out of any situation. To get a cure for Ebola and Zyka, collaborative efforts by scientific community could only extradite the work. Conclusively, no doubt such issues have to be tackled in different ways and solution of such imbroglios are not a thing of common place, such convoluted problems need meticulous effort by everyone; but still there are lot of things where simple ideas could bring a lot of change and these ideas originate from the minds of passionate people.
  16. As we acquire more knowledge, things do not become more comprehensible, but more complex and mysterious. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. ESSAY : Knowledge is power. As human beings-the only creatures on earth gifted with inquisition, it is our responsibility to utilize this gift to the fullest to acquire knowledge. The function of knowledge is both to understand things and improve things as they are today, and the process of acquiring it happens as we ask a lot of questions and search for answers. As children, we are all taught a set of rules and code of conduct by adults in our surroundings. We are naive observers of the universe around us and naturally inclined to ask questions when something fails our assumed reasoning or sparks our curiosity. Bill Waterson, the cartoonist responsible for Calvin and Hobbes often illustrated the inquisitive phenomenon of Calvin- A 6 year old who keeps asking his dad questions of various kinds--sometimes philosophical, sometimes scientific and some just related to the current state of the world under his observance. For examples “Why is he not allowed to drive a car?”. While he understands the answers which maybe factually inaccurate, He is never satisfied with them and is always introspecting, reading or probing for more information. Which illustrates that, our thirst for knowledge is unquenchable. Which illustrates that even when we do have answers, there is some unknown that allures us. Also, knowledge, in its broadest sense is infinite. There is no finite amount of knowledge which when learned and understood satisfies our curiosity. Knowledge is also, not merely a consumption tool, we create with knowledge. Ever since the dawn of time and early evolution, mankind sought to improve their quality of life and progress forward. We invented fire by rubbing flints together, made tools, invented cooking meat instead of raw consumption, the wheel instead of walking on foot and as of today, we are coming up with cars that drive themselves. This constant invention wouldn’t have been possible without some complexity and mystery that allures man to seek more. Sir Isaac Newton is another classic example that acquiring knowledge is a constant process, while he was intrigued by the apple falling down from the tree and invented gravity. He wasn’t satisfied with it as an end all be all for all natural phenomenon. He seeked to understand gravity with reference to other objects in the solar system, he invented his famous laws of motion and his scientific achievements led to various other inventions today which could only have been possible while trying to question and extend his line of work. Thus, seeking knowledge happens with the realization that there is more to learn and there is more than the known that requires our understanding. Great philosophers too, are a prime example of how knowledge becomes more mysterious and susceptible to questioning, inquisition and understanding, Acquiring knowledge is a constant process that humans undergo for self-improvement and improvement of the society. While there is something that defies our understanding or intuitive knowledge, we seek it--gather as many resources as possible to understand it, at which point it is our choice to probe further and find answers to other questions or be satisfied with our current understanding of the world.
  17. The following appeared as part of a letter to the editor of a scientific journal. "A recent study of eighteen rhesus monkeys provides clues as to the effects of birth order on an individual's levels of stimulation. The study also found that during pregnancy, first-time mother monkeys had higher levels of cortisol than did those who had had several offspring." Write a response in which you discuss one or more alternative explanations that could rival the proposed explanation and explain how your explanation(s) can plausibly account for the facts presented in the argument. The argument tries to state the relation between “the birth order and its effect on one’s level of stimulation.” It stands weakened primarily on the assumptions of the number of monkeys or humans taken up by the study and some vague claims made. First, the author does not take into consideration if the number of subjects examined gives way to a generalised view. The study considered ‘eighteen’ monkeys and performed the study on them. It does not even talk of the effects possible due to regional differences. Also it does not clearly tell the group of humans or pregnant women picked up for the study. Just because the study worked on a certain group does not generalise it for the others. Second, the assumed cause and effect may not be the only such relation. The eighteen monkeys considered could belong to a certain area and probably the observations are a regional characteristic. Also the situations taken up as checks for level of stimulation in an individual may be limited and not accurate. Moreover there could have been other reasons behind increased cortisal levels and not just the birth order. Maybe the first-time pregnant mother could have other hormonal or individual reasons accounting for more cortisal or could have been observed at a certain time, other than the other mothers, at which the level was high which might be the general phenomena but not known. Furthermore the argument uses vague language and terms and does not throw clear light on them with definitive facts and figures. It says “stimulating situations” and gives an example. It is possible that different indivuals react differently according to what is more or less stimulationg to them. Were the situations which were picked up for the study accountable and been tested upon before or not? Such questions need to be answered disntinctly. Clearly the argument relies heavily on unwarranted assumptions and ignorance of any of these would lead to a weakened or even invalid argument. The conclusion may be true but can not be proven so with the premises stated and the assumptions made. To strengthen the argument, the author can explicitly address to the direct assumptions including definitive facts and figures and probably take up a larger and varied group of subjects for diverse and more genuine observations.
  18. The author states that all students of a nation should follow the same national curriculum until they enter college. The basis of this recommendation might be that students should, no matter from which part of a country they are hailing from should be equitably given the chance to learn different subjects. But this recommendation in my opinion is going to have a negative impact on students rather than having a positive impact. We all are good at certain areas of fields of life. Some are good at many things, having a wide variety of talents and intelligence, but others only good at a few areas of life. I believe that no matter how capable a person is, everyone should be given an equal shot at there academic life. Consider a student, let's say Tim who is good at math and science, but not so good at arts. If the authors recommendation is adopted then a Tim will also have to learn arts as a part of this curriculum. From my personal experience this is going to create a problem for Tim as students get easily frustrated with studies, especially when its a subject they are not good at.Tim can work hard as much as he can but still under perform in an arts subject. Instead of forcing every student to take up every subject as part a national curriculum one should be given a choice as of which all subjects one want's to study. On the other hand, many students struggle through there school life trying to figure out what is it that they are good at. Most of them won't have much idea as for what career path they should take. Our society is rife with various occupations, which might be confounding to a student. In this case it will have a positive impact if authors recommendation is carefully adopted as a student can get familiar with different subjects in school and later on in college one can choose which field he should specialize in, then go on and learn about what one is good at or interested . The idea the author as it mentioned is parochial as it is too inconsiderate about the varying talents of student. Instead of requiring mandatory for all students of a nation to follow the same curriculum they should be given the choice which all parts of the curriculum they can adopt.Adopting his recommendation as it is could bring more problems than alleviate existing problems. Thanks !
  19. ISSUE Prompt – The best way to teach – whether as an educator, employer or parent – is to praise positive actions and ignore negative one’s. While some agree to the statement that the best way to teach is to praise only positive actions and ignore all the negative one's, I strongly disagree to this because this will not only paralyse the ability to distinguish between positive and negative actions but it will also make the learner an amateur in tackling the negative situations. While some might argue that by teaching only positive actions, learners will indulge only into positive actions .However this statement is faulty because they would not be able to distinguish between a positive and negative action as they would have been taught only about the positive actions and wouldn't know what a negative action is. For example, if an individual is not aware that taking drug could cause harm to his/her health, then drugs would appeal that individual because of its addictive nature. So praising the negative actions while teaching is equally important as it is to teach positive one's. This will make the learner aware about both sides of actions and will brush up their skills to quickly distinguish between the two. Don't you think that learners should know what is negative and why is it negative? An equally important question would be - Don't you think that learners should know that why a particular actions is stated as negative and why they should avoid involving into a negative action? The main agenda of teaching is to make the learner intellectually strong enough to broader his ability to not only distinguish between positive and negative or between good and bad but to make him able to understand the complexities of an action. A learner should be taught about why a particular action is negative and what will be the consequences of involving in such a negative actions. For example, a learner should be made aware of the punishments of crimes like cheating, murder or rape so as to teach him why he should avoid such actions and what could happen to him by getting involved in such crimes. Now think about a situation that you have accidentely hit someone with your car. What will you do in such situation? You'll either ran away or you'll take the victim to hospital and inform the police. Here you'll have two choices. One is good or a positive choice and other is bad or negative choice. But if you had not been taught about tackling negative situations, how would you make a wise decision? So, i have only chosen this example to state that the main agenda of teaching is to make a learner morally strong and make him/her able to make wise decision. A learner should also be taught about tackling a negative situation and you can only teach those by making them aware of negative situations only. So to conclude, I'd say that it is equally important to teach about the negative actions along with the positive actions to make the individuals aware of both and make them wise enough to tackle the negative situations and to teach them about why they should stay away from indulging in negative actions.
  20. Hey guys, I'm new to www.urch.com I'm not sure if its the right place for this, but could anyone please evaluate an essay I have written? I am preparing for the GRE and I wrote this essay as a part of my Analyze an Issue task. Please provide suggestions regarding the expected score of the essay and ways to improve it! Thanks http://www.www.urch.com/forums/images/icons/icon6.pnghttp://www.www.urch.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.png Here's my topic and essay: To understand the most important characteristics of a society, one must study its major cities. Cities have always been demographic and cultural hubs of human civilization since ancient history. A city represents a full spectrum of population of a society in regards to culture, race, wealth and habits. Study of the major cities gives a unique chance to peer into an accurately represented group of individuals and conditions of that era. The data collected from studying a city represents the demographics of a huge number of people. It gives the information about their average age, sex, employment and literacy rate. People in a city are from diverse geographical and cultural backgrounds. Due to this, they provide a concentrated sample representing a much larger scope of population. So, it is easy to see that any data collected as a result of study of a city is reliable and is representative of the actual society. Additionally, the study of intangible factors such as the philosophical interests and the political inclination of the people in a city provides profound insight about the society’s behaviors. As a result, one can make accurate predictions about the society's reaction to sensitive issues such as religious agendas, politics, war and crime. For example, the recent decision of legalizing gay marriage in the USA is a result of continuous support from both the gay as well as the straight communities in the major metropolitan areas of the country over time.We can infer that an accurate knowledge of a city gives prediction about the various behavior of people living in it. Similarly the work habits and culture of people in a city, their taste in music, arts and popular entertainment are indicators of their level of productivity and happiness. Although insightful, it is necessary to realize that the results of these studies may be influenced by factors of national and global interests such as wars and natural calamities. Thus, the study of major cities of a society ensures an accurate, precise and well represented data regarding a huge mass of people in a wide scope.
  21. I agree that developed nations should reduce the energy consumption. There is a plethora of information proving that climate change is occurring faster because of countries that have more resources and are densely populated consume more energy and other non renewable resources. One way to reduce the energy consumption is to change the typical electricity source to a renewable system. It is easier for people living in these areas to transition into a renewable energy source thanks to the easy access to information and different options of energy supplies. Also there is new transportation technology that is available in these countries that can make a big difference. Anyone in a developed country can look up information on climate change, types of renewable energy, how to obtain such service or how to make the switch on your own. The amount of literature is almost infinite so education on the topic is attainable. Most developed countries give incentives to people how make the switch to a renewable energy source bringing the initial costs of the new technology down. There's even been reports made of cities having too much renewable energy and giving it to neighboring areas, so it is definitely a viable option to keep the lifestyle that most people in developed countries are accustomed to while not affecting our climate. Technology is advancing at a rapid pace. In countries with access to this new developments you can even change the way you move around. There is every type of hybrid car and even electric car easily available. Since developed countries are densely populated a small change as the type of vehicle used by the public can make a big change. This technology is becoming more affordable and comfortable as years go by and save the owners money on gasoline. There is also advances in public transportation like buses and trains. We only have one planet Earth and we need to take care of it for future generations. The best way is to take advantage of the resources available in developed countries to educate the population and bring everyone to awareness. Renewable energy is the future, it is more cost effective for anyone in the long run and improves the quality of life. It is important that countries that have the resources available do act because the denser the population the bigger the carbon footprint, that is why the change needs to happen in these areas first. Once big cities and even countries make the switch the movement can proceed to other areas of the world.
  22. Technology makes people's lives simpler rather than more complicated. There are always two sides of a coin, in a similar way technology advancement also have it's pros and cons. But, according to me it have helped more in simplyfying our lifes than making it complicated. For example, in earlier times just for delivering a simple message we had to write a letter and post it and it used to take weeks for it to get deliverd.Just imagine a situation which needs urgency. But, now a days contacting somebody is just a seconds away. This gives lot of security and confidance to people and also even though families are at distant locations they still can get in contact whenever they want. In the field of medical science now that we have so many advanced technologies such as advanced machines like artifical pacemakers, sophisticated blood dialysis equipments ,better ways to handle child birth , better drugs and cures and many more . This has increased the overall life expectancy of human beings. With the latest technology we are able to improve and simplify our education system.Earlier when everything was based on book learning, which was not necessarliy available to all the students but now with internet we are able to gather any kind of educational material. Also, the more the information is spread among people there will be more chances of improvement of the overall education system. But, this advancement has come with it's cost. The improvement of technology has made human beings very lazy.Even for the smallest things of day to day life people are relying completely on the technlogy, which in the long run can cause lot of physical problems to the entire society on whole. Moreover, technology has introduced lots and lots advanced war machines and missiles and weapons of destruction , which are capable to destroy the entire earth. In conclusion, we can say that technolgy has made human life simpler in all the aspects hence providing them with the ample amount of their time so that they can work in whichever field they like , rather than spending their time in trivial activites. It has made the entire world into a global village.Helped in bringing the people together.Though it has negative aspects as well like weapons responsible for mass destruction. But, as we say nothing is entirely black or white, but rather a shade of gray. But the lighter the shade is the better it is, And according to me technology has helped in improving and simplifying the life more than it has made it complicated.
  23. Please review my following Issue essay and rate it. Thanks for all your help guys! :D ISSUE 1 As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. --------------------------------------------------- With the development of science and technology made through out the human history, especially the past one hundred years or so, people these days are spending more time relying on technology to solve various types of problems. Does the ability of humans to think for themselves really deteriorate as they rely more and more on technology? Admittedly, the improvement of technology and its concomitant contribution to a more convenient daily life does to certain extent obviate the necessity of many traditional tasks, subtly affecting the humans’ ability of thinking. Nevertheless, as a whole effect in general, technology progress improves working efficiency and labor safety, and frees humans from low-level repeated physical work to high-level decision-making intellectual work. In addition, technology proposes brand-new problems as well which challenges the humans’ thinking ability to an even unexpected extent. It is true that in many situations, the requirement for thinking seems less demanding than before due to the development of technology as the “brains” of computers have replaced humans’ role in many tasks. For instance, students no longer need think hard to solve involving algebraic equations as calculators could do the job for them; engineers do not have to worry about the side effect of modifying their design drawings at one place as in the past due to the modern CAD software’s smart updates for all affected parts; people nowadays could simply forget about their previous pains of finding parking lots when they go shopping at some remote super-markets as the contemporary online shopping systems will deliver the customers anything they need right away with the help of modern logistics, information technology and advanced transportation tools. The development of technology does so much that humans are no longer required to solve many of the traditional tasks and consequently humans’ ability of thinking seems indeed less explored, exercised or even deteriorating. But does the improvement of technology really eliminate the necessity of thinking and deprive humans of their opportunity of solving problems by themselves? With the fading away of stereotyped problems, such as solving algebraic equation on a piece of sketch paper, people are now faced with completely new types of problems, such as how to utilize calculators and computers to solve more complex problems where instead of the regular manipulation innovation and creativity are tested. Technology on the one hand frees humans from the boring and repeated work, yet on the other hand brings in more demanding tasks. In the old says, factory workers have to operate their machines for repeated parts processing which seemed very laborious, however, nowadays they have to program CNC machines for automatic parts manufacturing and tool replacement and they are asked to work on more than one CNC machines as the manager feels the employees are “working less”. Technology does replace humans’ role in many traditional tasks, but technology puts humans in new positions which are more intellectually based. In addition, with the emergence of new technologies, a host of new problems also turn up. The new technology of utilizing nuclear energy for generating electricity brings forward new questions of its ecological impact when the nuclear plant’s cooling water, contaminated with radiation, is discharged into the rivers and ocean. While the development of antibiotics helped cure many patients with infection, it at the same time also produced the question of bacteria’s developed immunity which makes many previously effective medicines invalid and that whether the development of these antibiotics indirectly facilitates the mutation of bacteria towards a more hazardous and dangerous state. All these new problems never existed before the development of these new technologies and they require far more thinking than the old problems. In conclusion, while technology frees humans from the traditional laborious work, eliminating the necessity of thinking for the stereotyped problems, yet technology meanwhile brings forth new types of problems which are more intellectually intense and even unprecedented. Humans’ mind has been working on all kinds of problems throughout the history to keep up with pace of our world change. With the development of technology, old problems might become obsolete but new problems with more challenges will never stop appearing, ensuring the opportunity for humans’ mind to explore and develop to higher state and securing the brains’ role of thinking from deteriorating.
  24. Request to review my argument. An international development organization, in response to a vitamin A deficiency among people in the impoverished nation of Tagus, has engineered a new breed of millet high in vitamin A. While seeds for this new type of millet cost more, farmers will be paid subsidies for farming the new variety of millet. Since millet is already a staple food in Tagus, people will readily adopt the new variety. To combat vitamin A deficiency, the government of Tagus should do everything it can to promote this new type of millet. Answer The argument is about a millet developed by an organisation which helps combat vitamin A deficiency. At first glance the argument does look cogent but there are several aspects in which it is lacking. Vitamin A deficiency is due to low exposure of sun rays. In the argument there is no mention of the testing of the new breed of millet. It is widely know fact that genetically modified substances may prove to be pernicious to humans. There is strong possibility that after adopting to the new breed of millets there may side-effects experienced by the people. The argument further states that farmers will be paid subsidy on farming the new variety of mullet which is certainly a good thing. However it would be imprudent to assume that the people will readily adopt to it.Since the cost of the new variety is high and there may be farmers who cultivate vegetables other than millet. For them adopting to the new variety might prove to be difficult. Lastly instead urging the government to promote the new type of millet it would be beneficial if there is a focus on improving the agricultural facilities at Tagus. Thus resulting in a better life for the people.
  25. The following appeared as part of a letter to the editor of a scientific journal. "A recent study of eighteen rhesus monkeys provides clues as to the effects of birth order on an individual's levels of stimulation. Several gratuitous assumptions formulate the given argument. Primarily, the argument generalizes studies of eighteen rhesus monkeys , as standard trait of the entire species. Thereby rendering the conclusion fallacious. The study specifically involves only eighteen rhesus monkeys. Traits that hold valid for rhesus monkeys may not necessarily hold true for the entire specie. Besides, no information pertaining to the environment in which the studies have been conducted is provided . How a Rhesus monkey responds in its natural habitat , can be very different to controlled experimental environment. Had the letter provided specific details of the experimental environment and its impact in the behavioral aspect of Rhesus monkey , we could justify the conclusion. Even then , it cannot be concluded that what holds true for eighteen Rhesus may hold true for all the other Rhesus monkeys and infact the entire monkey specie. The letter also states that higher level of cortisol results in increased body activity. No substantial proof has been provided to coorelate the effect of Cortisol and individual's levels of simulation. The simulation may be due to other reasons like the age between the first born and their younger sibling .Effects of other factors have not been dealt with in the study. Higher level of cortisol in first time mother is observed compared to those who have several offsprings.Argument assumes that , this higher cortisol level results in higher cortisol level in offspring. This is an unwarranted assumption. No proofs have been provided in the letter for this consequent effect of cortisol in pregnant mothers. However, the letter also states similar behavioral trait among humans. This could make the argument a bit more veritable. But again, the letter does not provide any insight into the study group . The number of people , their socio-economic background , race- ethnicity none of this has been taken under consideration . Because the argument is based on several unwarranted assumptions , we can refute the study .The argument lacks specific details as mentioned earlier to bolster its study.
