Fall 2022 Profile Evaluation: PhD in Economics/Finance
Marty McRy posted a topic in PhD in Economics
Profile: Undergraduate University: UC Santa Barbara Undergraduate Major: Economics Undergraduate GPA: 3.86 GRE: 166 Q/161 V/4 AWA *Should I retake the GRE? What are the consequences if I don’t score 167 + on the quantitative reasoning section?* Econ Courses Microeconomic Theory (A), Intermediate Microeconomic Theory (-A), Advanced Microeconomic Theory (B+), Econometrics (A), Advanced Econometrics (A), Game Theory (A), Senior Thesis (A) Math Course Multivariable Calculus (A), Linear Algebra (A), Advanced Linear Algebra (A), Differential Equations (A), Methods of Analysis (A+), and Real Analysis (A) Statistics, Computer Science, and Data Science Courses Introduction to Computer Science (A), Probability Theory (A-), and Introduction to Data Science (A) Research Experience I’ve spent the last two years working as a research assistant at the Federal Reserve. I currently work as the Corporate Bonds and Credit Quality RA in the Capital Markets section. I regularly prepare charts and answer ad hoc questions for economists and board members. I also dedicate time towards economist’s independent research; I’m currently working on two papers concerning monetary policy. Before joining the Board, I wrote a senior thesis and did some cleaning/entry work for a professor at UCSB. Letters of Recommendation Two Board economists and one economist from UCSB; I have worked with each of them all for at least a year. Teaching Experience I recently revamped the R and Linux training in Capital Markets for incoming RAs. I also volunteer for a data science course taught at Howard University in collaboration with the Federal Reserve. Research Interests I’m broadly interested in applied economic research. Although I enjoy my work surrounding empirical corporate finance, I also have an interest in household finance. Applications Top 25 economics Ph.D. programs and a handful of finance Ph.D. programs. *Should I consider applying to more finance programs given my research interests and the state of my profile?* My questions are highlighted in red. All other comments and suggestions welcome. Thank you for reviewing my profile :) -
Hi I have started considering applying to Finance Ph.Ds as a diversification option for Econ phd applications or perhaps as a first choice given some of the advantages that business school phds seem to have. A profile evaluation is appreciated. All advice pointing out differences or similarities between the two application processes is welcome. Stats: University of Southern California Double Major in Mathematics and Economics Overall GPA: 3.88 Math Courses: Calc 1-3: A Linear Algebra: A Probability Theory(MVC prereq): A- Mathematical Statistics: A Real Analysis 1+2: A Topology: A Advanced Linear Algebra B+ Econ Courses (All A grades): Intermediate Micro + Macro Econometrics Advanced Econometrics Thesis course I've taken 3 programming courses for A grades. I was in the honors research program at my Economics department and have good contacts with the professors there if that is relevant. I have never taken a business or finance course. I'm currently working a finance job in a boutique asset management firm and plan on staying here for two years. Not sure if my profile is appropriate at all? Or if it is, where I should be applying. Thanks all.

Hello, I am planning to apply to PhD in economics programs (Fall 2022). My profile is as follows: Undergraduate: BBA with a Major in Finance (University of Dhaka, the best university in my country Bangladesh, although not highly ranked) CGPA (3.94/4.00). Graduate: MSc Finance from The University of Manchester (Grade: DIstinction) Graduate : MS Economics in my home country (Ongoing, finished 24 credits out of 36, current CGPA 4.00/4.00) Graduate Coursework: Under MS mathematics in my home country (completed four courses, currently taking 4 more but the result will not be available before application) Math Courses: Completed : Calculus I,II ; Partial Differential Equations, Integral Equations, Mathematical Statistics, Business Statistics, Matrix theory with Linear Algebra (This is a P/NP course, prerequisite for MS mathematics courses) . All are A/A- Currently Taking: Real Analysis (P/NP course), Discrete Mathematics, Dynamical systems, ODE, Stochastic Processes (Results will be available in February) Economics Courses: Undergrad Level: Intermediate Micro (I,II), Intermediate Macro (I,II) Graduate Level : Advanced Micro, Advanced Macro, Cross-sectional Econometrics, Time series econometrics, Applied Econometrics, Advanced Econometrics, Mathematical Economics Other Relevant Courses: International Finance, Asset Pricing, Empirical Finance, Labour Economics (All Graduate Level) GRE: Quant 169, Verbal 153, AWA 4.0 (Planning to retake in early November) Research Experience: Independent Masters Thesis in Manchester (Got distinction), Econometrics courseworks with good remarks, Doing another thesis for MS Economics in my home country Teaching Experience: Working as Lecturer in one of the Universities in my country. Taking Advanced Business Maths Course. LoR: Supervisor from Uni of Manchester, Two top economists of my country (I have taken multiple courses under them and have done good in research coursework) I am planning to apply to 9/10 schools from the top 20 and 3 from 20-30. MIT, Princeton, Harvard, Berkeley, Wisconsin Madison, John Hopkins, Michigan, Minnesota, Maryland, Vanderbilt, UCSD, Boston. Some suggestions would be helpful: 1. Do you think I am too much ambitious in case of selecting schools? 2. Do you think the less known schools (from where i have done econ and math courses) will be a disadvantage for me? Although I have done good in rigorous programs like MSc Finance in Manchetser which was mostly proof based masters. 3. Since some of the math courses will not be shown in transcripts though i am currently undertaking those, how do I mention those? In My SoP? Thanks.

I applied to 19 schools this year (17 PhD in Finance across US and Europe) and 2 MSc in Finance (LSE, Tinbergen). I was rejected without interview from 16, had interview at Michigan Ross and INSEAD and finally got an offer from Bocconi for PhD in Finance. I have a decent profile coming from top schools in my country (Bachelors in Physics, MBA) but have had below average grades in my UG Maths sequence (B-, B, B+). In the first two ones, I simply did not study (please don't ask why). So the rejections (especially from Masters program) fill in tremendous self doubt as to my ability to handle PhD level curriculum. I have worked on 2 research papers during my Masters, cleared CFA Level 2, working in a top US Bank and work with utmost discipline and sincerity. I think my primary motivation for pursuing a PhD was not research rather 2 factors. One, I love teaching, having taught in schools and other people. Second, I hate corporate world and the feeling of having sold myself and my life for big bucks. So being a Professor seemed a good option. But I don't know if I should even pursue this path anymore. Seeking some advice.

I think the placement for these two are comparable. The faculty at Booth is stronger, but it seems that the program size at Wharton is smaller and the culture at Wharton is more "caring". Which program would be a better choice? Any comments are much appreciated!

It seems that the placement for LBS is good and stable, but the faculty at Booth is generally much stronger. How to choose between these two programs? Any comments will be much appreciated!

I'm trying to figure out if I have a shot getting in anywhere, and if so where. Not to tell you my life story, but here's my life story: I started a rank 30-40ish Finance PhD, I chose this school over other similarly ranked schools I got into because they seemed to have some great characteristics, when to my dismay, during the first couple months there it turned out a lot of what they used to get me there wasn't what they claimed, and I hated the location. I just kept going for a couple years, but I became very depressed, and my wife had dealt with some depression before and it returned severely - probably due to my unhappiness. Oh, and we have 3 kids. With both of us on depression medication and going to counseling I kept my GPA barely above mandatory. Finally, when the department seemed almost unilaterally against my research interests (apparently too much "quantitative finance" and not enough "economics"), with the blessing of the department PhD coordinator, I decided I was going to do a PhD in a different discipline (I looked at applied math, operations, informatics, electrical engineering, etc.) in order to do the finance research I wanted. At this point it was too late to apply to programs, so I got into the mathematics master's program at the same university as an application/resume booster (top 40 math department). Because I was no longer planning to do the finance PhD I didn't study for comps, and I didn't pass the empirical corporate section (I did pass the others). I did the courses for the math master's, but between covid, depression, and PhD level math classes kind of being a bigger bite than I could chew, I'm going to squeak out this spring with barely over a 3.0 for the finance, econ, stats, CS, math courses combined. After a lot of thought and discussion with former professors, I've discovered that my interests can fit into "financial economics", and I'd REALLY rather be a finance professor, and honestly I feel like my research really contributes to finance and economics. So... it seems like I should really just get back into a finance PhD and eat whatever they feed me just to get through. But I'm unsure if I have any hope of getting in. I have a 168 gre quant, I think I could get it to 170. I have a working paper with a professor that hopefully will be submitted this summer. I have very developed research interests and a good handle on current research in related areas. I have master's degrees in econ, finance, and (soon) math. But my grad school grades are just terrible, AND I gave up on a program I was already in. Thoughts on being able to get in somewhere?

If my business background does not suit any of previously mentioned universities, could you provide me with some other unis in EU, which will be more keen to accept for economics someone with business background? Thanks!

I have received an offer for the MSc in Finance at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). However, I am thinking of changing to another program; MSc in Finance and Economics The reasoning behind my decision is as follows; I am willing to pursue an academic career, thus will be applying for the MRes/Phd in Finance offered by LSE upon completion of my taught masters degree. Therefore, the MSc in Finance and Economics will better suit my career goals. In addition, the program will enable me to complete the MRes/Phd program in 4 rather than 5 years. If you could help me by answering the following questions, I would be forever grateful Is this a wise decision ? Can I easily transfer from one program to another? When should I transfer to the other program, before or during the Michaelmas term ? Is the MSc Finance and Economics program more challenging ? Will I be able to catch up with the quantitative modules of the course given that I come from a business/management background ? How should i prepare? Thanks you in advance

Hello all, I am posting because I have really wanted to be a professor and am thinking I may actually pursue a phd. I haven't done much work and am just sort of seeing how competitive my profile may be and what I can do to improve it. Undergrad GPA: 3.73 from a large state school with a top accounting program - double major acctg / finance Masters GPA: 3.5 Macc from same school - (integrated program) Research Experience: None Teaching experience: None (was a TA for a couple semesters early on in UG but responsibilities were mostly grading) Work Experience: So far 1 year of investment banking experience CPA Licensed as well as several FINRA licenses needed for IB Math: Only 1 business calc class but if I ended up applying for programs I would take necessary courses at the CC or online. I can probably get good LOR's from some professors and / or people at the bank I work at. I know that since I have not taken the GMAT or GRE yet it will be hard to say exactly where I will be competitive, I am a good test taker so assume I can get at least a 700. Will I be competitive with this background at top schools assuming a good GMAT score? Further, I am not set on an accounting PHD but figured since I am a CPA, I will have a better chance of getting into a better program than a finance PHD program. Is that correct? I want to go to a top program but will settle for a lesser one that is still good if it means that it is not as crazily research focused as I hear the top top ones like Penn / MIT / Stanford / Chicago would be because ultimately I am more interested in the teaching aspect. Have no idea what I want to research yet - have not gotten that far, but just want some feedback if with this background I would be at all competitive at good schools.

Is it possible to enter finance job market from Econ Phd?

Hello everyone. I am aiming to do a PhD in Economics or Finance (depending on faculty research areas) in the US, with research interests in asset pricing, behavioral economics, and econometrics. However my current profile is likely not strong enough for top programs, and would appreciate any thoughts on a suggested plan for the next 1-2 years to improve candidacy. Background B.A. Economics (Major GPA: 3.8) / B.S. Mathematics (Major GPA: 2.8) at Top 50 in US Undergraduate studies include a published research paper in asset pricing (low ranked journal), a separate conference presentation, and a 2nd year PhD course in econometrics. After graduation, I took a semester of visiting graduate studies at a Top 10 program. As I am much more interested in learning than maximizing my grades, I petitioned the departments to take coursework without the pre-requisites. It's been immense effort just to keep up and while it was extremely rewarding, unfortunately it doesn't look very good on a transcript for admissions purposes. The courses I took were Analysis I (C+), Analysis II (B), and a 2nd year PhD course in theoretical finance (C+). GRE: 167 Q/ 160-something V Any suggestions on improving the profile for admissions?

Hi everyone. New here. Looking to get my profile evaluated as I am hoping to get into a PhD in Econ / Finance Econ / Finance. I am currently eyeing schools in the UK. Here goes: 24 years old 730 Gmat Bachelor of Economics (double majors in financial economics and econometrics) at top Australian school - distinction average. Originally did a pure mathematics line, so I reached higher complex analysis, higher differential equations, higher theory of statistics, higher several variable calculus all with distinctions on top of distinction average in econ courses. Dean's listed for being in the top 5% of students. MFin/Econ at top 10 european school (not UK) - top quartile grade-wise. 2 completed PhD courses with full marks as electives. My master's thesis supervisor is incredibly well known in his field but I have not started my thesis with him so no reference letter yet. Taught 3 classes of quantitative methods (think Stata and econometrics up to panel data + IV) + applied micro Will hold exercise classes in financial econometrics and predictive analysis (2 time series courses in R) both at graduate level. 3 reference letters: 1. professor who I am teaching for 2. associate professor who taught my one phd course and likes my ideas 3. professor who I am on the study board with (a student rep. thing) Relevant work experience: 6 months at a top economic consultancy between my masters and bachelors. Looking to apply to the top schools in the UK. Of course, it goes without saying that it is competitive. Feedback would be much appreciated. All the best and merry xmas.

Hi everyone. I am applying to finance PhD this year, and I would appreciate if you could give any advice on my profile. Thank you so much in advance! Applying to: PhD in Finance Test Score (GMAT): V44 98%, Q50 85%, AWA 4.5 43%, Total 770 99% Undergraduate: Bachelor in Business Administration; GPA: 3.81/4.00 Graduate: MSc in Finance; GPA: 3.97/4.00 Math/Statistics: Analysis, Stochastic Process, Math for Economics, Econometrics.. Work Experience: 4 years in the financial industry. Research Experience: - Master thesis in finance, co-author with my advisor, published in a low ranked journal (tier 3). - Three working papers, co-author with advisor and a PhD student, submitted to finance journals. Teaching Experience: T.A. in an MBA Class (only one semester..) Questions or Concerns: - I have already submitted my application to top 50 schools, and I am wondering whether I should consider applying to schools outside of the top 50 as well. - I didn't take core math courses, such as Calculus and Linear Algebra, although I've taught myself those topics. Would it be an issue?

Test Scores (GMAT/GRE): Q160 78%, V161 88% (Yep, quant is low...) Undergrad GPA: 3.2 at a Harvard, Yale, Princeton. Liberal Arts major. (Didn't discover my love for finance until a few years after college so wasn't terribly motivated. Also played a varsity sport.) Graduate GPA: 3.75. Top 10 MBA with a Finance Concentration. Received award given to students with above 3.85 in Finance / Accounting courses. Finalist for the top finance student in graduating class (four finalists out of 300 students in the class). Research Experience: Limited but I did an Independent Study under the tutelage of a well-known professor my second-year of business school. He gave me the equivalent of an A and seemed to love the work I did. He's one of my LOR writers and is well-known in the field. Teaching Experience: None (unless you count being an officer in the Marines...?) Work Experience: Worked in Investment Banking at a bulge bracket bank for two years post-MBA. Did mostly M&A work -- lots of financial modeling, valuation, etc. Prior to my MBA, I was a Marine officer for four years. (My recommenders seem to think the military experience will help me stand out -- I'm not sure as I'm still concerned about the GRE score) Concentration Applying to: Finance Number of programs planned to apply to: Atleast 10 Dream Schools: I don't think I have a shot at a top 10 with my current GRE score -- but NYU or Columbia if we're dreaming. Targeting Maryland, George Washington, George Mason, Arizona State, University of California-Irvine. Really just wondering what's realistic for me and where I should be aiming. Other Questions: Don't have a lot of higher level math courses or any programming experience -- I have nine months of free time until I start a program so I can spend as much time as needed building a strong foundation here. I've started taking MIT's math curriculum on OpenCourseWare (starting with single variable calc and working my way up to applied math). Is this the best use of my time to 1) show I'm dedicated to improving this part of my profile and 2) prepare myself for the quant-heavy courses at the PhD level? Anything else I should be doing in the meantime? What made you want to pursue a PhD? Absolutely loved my finance courses / professors in business school and want to dive deeper / learn more. It was the first time I ever really felt incredibly motivated academically. Couldn't stand the life of a banker and missed the opportunity to do research behind theories on asset pricing / valuation / etc. Questions or concerns you have about your profile? My main concern is obviously my Quant GRE. I see a lot of programs with a "minimum" of 160 and I'm right there. My recommenders -- all highly-regarded, well-published finance professors at my T10 MBA program -- all seem to think it shouldn't be an issue given my strong academic performance in business school (which they say they will attest to in their LORs) and the "uniqueness" of my military background. I'm not so sure, so I'm interested to hear others' experience with Finance PhDs and low quant scores. Also lacking a lot of high-level math courses and looking for ways to pro-actively address that over the next few months and convey that in my application Any additional specific questions you may have: What range of schools (T20, T30, etc) should I target? (Assuming I don't retake the GRE)
