I did a semester independent study using Mas Colell and I found Nolan Millers notes useful. I didn't look at Varian. Nolan Miller: Notes on Microeconomic Theory

I cant really tell you about specific fields, but I have a little insight. I started as a math major and actuarial science minor I like the econ classes from my actuarial science minor so I picked up a econ major. Actuarial science is really about the tests. I'm not sure what your minor is like but mine was probability and math stats (which prepares you for exam P) and time value of money (which prepares you for exam FM) and the rest was just econ and some applied regression classes. People recommend taking probability and math stats anyways since they're useful. A applied regression class is good too for learning some simple stat software. For me the math major with a actuarial science minor really complemented my econ major and my goal of getting into a phd program in economics.

I have funded offers from UIUC and Stony Brook my interests are in game theory. What would you guys suggest? I'm looking for all the input I can get, and I have to decide in a few days. I have a thread here: http://www.www.urch.com/forums/phd-economics/131341-decision-uiuc-stony-brook-ut-austin-interest-micro-game-thoery.html -

That's right. So any opinions? I'm going to accept one of them in the next day or 2. Some input would be awesome. This forum has been really helpful. Also if I go to SB I'll definitely take a class with Hawkeye Pierce:D -
Here's my situation. I have a funded offer from UIUC. I received an email from Stony Brook recently that made it sound like if I was still interested I could get a funded offer. And I'm on UT-Austin's wait list. My interests are in game theory and microeconomics. I went and visited UIUC and I found out that the professor I wanted to work with is pretty much unapproachable and he does not take on students often. What do you guys suggest? I realize that UIUC is much better in most fields, but SB is supposed to be pretty good at game theory. Also what would everyone suggest if I got off the wait list at UT-Austin? Does it make sense to even consider SB over these two? Location-wise for me SB > UT > UIUC
