  1. I did a semester independent study using Mas Colell and I found Nolan Millers notes useful. I didn't look at Varian. Nolan Miller: Notes on Microeconomic Theory
  2. I cant really tell you about specific fields, but I have a little insight. I started as a math major and actuarial science minor I like the econ classes from my actuarial science minor so I picked up a econ major. Actuarial science is really about the tests. I'm not sure what your minor is like but mine was probability and math stats (which prepares you for exam P) and time value of money (which prepares you for exam FM) and the rest was just econ and some applied regression classes. People recommend taking probability and math stats anyways since they're useful. A applied regression class is good too for learning some simple stat software. For me the math major with a actuarial science minor really complemented my econ major and my goal of getting into a phd program in economics.
  3. For people waiting for UT-Austin. I called them today. Vivian said we should know by noon tomorrow.
  4. I have funded offers from UIUC and Stony Brook my interests are in game theory. What would you guys suggest? I'm looking for all the input I can get, and I have to decide in a few days. I have a thread here: http://www.www.urch.com/forums/phd-economics/131341-decision-uiuc-stony-brook-ut-austin-interest-micro-game-thoery.html

  6. That's right. So any opinions? I'm going to accept one of them in the next day or 2. Some input would be awesome. This forum has been really helpful. Also if I go to SB I'll definitely take a class with Hawkeye Pierce:D
  7. Here's my situation. I have a funded offer from UIUC. I received an email from Stony Brook recently that made it sound like if I was still interested I could get a funded offer. And I'm on UT-Austin's wait list. My interests are in game theory and microeconomics. I went and visited UIUC and I found out that the professor I wanted to work with is pretty much unapproachable and he does not take on students often. What do you guys suggest? I realize that UIUC is much better in most fields, but SB is supposed to be pretty good at game theory. Also what would everyone suggest if I got off the wait list at UT-Austin? Does it make sense to even consider SB over these two? Location-wise for me SB > UT > UIUC

  9. Did the people who were still waiting for a response from WUSTL ever hear back? I still haven't.
  10. Haha ya I was thinking that it wouldn't make much sense but trying to keep positive.
  11. I'm still waiting. It's driving me crazy! I wonder if we're on the verge of accept/waitlist or reject/waitlist :hmm:

  14. You could also vnc into your schools server. Nomachine or Tightvnc are good vnc clients if your on windows. SSH = command line VNC = desktop Edit: sorry I replied more to LAecon than OP

  17. Here is what I decided. Reach: University of Chicago, CalTech, Maryland Others: UT-Austin, Washington U-St. Louis, Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, Stony Brook Also I received my AWA score: 4.5. Based on my profile which is in the original post, what do you guys think? Do I need more 'safer schools' or should I not worry about it.
  18. I have a question. My verbal GRE score was a 440, and UCSD requires at least a 460. Should I not even bother to apply there? My quant was a 790. My profile is here http://www.www.urch.com/forums/phd-economics/126233-my-profile-please-help-me-choose-schools.html Thanks
  19. Its finally Thanks Giving break and I can get going on my applications. Thank you everyone for your input. I will add VT and look into Stony Brook. I have been trying to figure out what schools are good in my fields of interest, but I'm having a hard time finding that kind of information. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  20. It's time for me to start applying to graduate schools. I'm not sure what kind of schools I have a shot at getting into. Please help me choose a list of schools that I can realistically get into. I started college studying physics then added math. Around Jr. year I decided I didn't want to attend graduate school for either. I started taking economics classes and liked it a lot. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: BA Economics, BS Math, and BA Physics at a small liberal arts school. Undergrad GPA: 3.85/4.0 GRE: 790 quant, 440 verbal, have not received AWA score yet Math Courses: Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Abstract Algebra, Real Analysis, Grad Level Probability, Intro to Proofs All A's besides a B in Differential Equations. Econ Courses (undergrad-level):Intermediate Micro Macro, Econometrics, Mathematical Economics, Readings in Economics (some of Mas Colell) All A's Other Courses: A CS class, many physics classes, some stat classes Letters of Recommendation: I think my letters will be pretty good, but since I go to a small liberal arts school I'm not sure how much weight they will hold. Two are from profs I've done research with and the other is from a prof that I did an independent reading of the Mas Colell book with. Research Experience: Physics REU one summer at University Arkansas. Then a REU in finance at my school. Also two semesters of acoustics physics research. Teaching Experience: Tutored introductory physics classes for 2 semesters Research Interests: Non-cooperative game theory, and general equilibrium. SOP: Still working on it. Concerns: The fact that I go to a small lesser known liberal arts college and that my recommendations will not be from well known people. Also my verbal GRE is pretty low. Applying to: Reach Schools: U Chicago, Berkeley Other: Cal Tech, UCLA, UC San Diego, U Texas Austin, Washington, Washington University in St. Louis MO, University Illinois, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara. This list of schools is not for sure. Please help me make this list more realistic. Should I be aiming lower?
