  1. I took the GRE twice: 1st: V144, Q152, AWA3.5 I mainly used Princeton Review 2nd: V145, Q155, AWA3.5 In addition to Princeton, I used Barron for Math strategies, I answered verbal question in Barron, ETS guide and Kaplan. TOEFL: 108 I am applying to a doctoral program in pharmacy for the next Fall. I wonder what are my chances??? It seems that my GRE is not promising! I even was not able to apply to many programs that appeal to me because they require a score equivalent to 1200+ on the old scale.
  2. Check this: Interviewing for Graduate School Admissions There are also links at the bottom of the page about graduate school interview
  3. Hello, I am applying to PhD program in Pharmacy in the US. I already submitted my application and supporting documents. Is contacting faculty members for research opportunity positively impact the admission decision?? What if I don't do that, does it compromise the admission decision especially that I am seeking financial aid. I hope someone reply back! Thanks..
  4. Regarding your first question, I don't think your visa type will be a problem if the university offers to reimburse you, but you HAVE to check that with the program you're applying to... Do people there know you are not in the US? B1 and B2 visa are for different purposes but they are offered in the same category.
  5. Well, I don't have a lot of experience, but I may try to answer your questions. Q1- If an international student gets a call for interview, how are they interviews? On Phone, on Skype or are they expected to travel to US? Depends on the program. Check the website. I came across programs that requires an on-site interview (they explicitly discouraged applicants outside the US from applying) and another programs that allowed Skype interviews for international applicants. Other programs do not require any interviews. So, it all depends on the program. Q2-Do domestic students who can come for an in-person interview have an obvious advantage over international students who may only be interviewed over phone and Skype? (After all in-person interviews applicants often attend recruitment weekends, have lunch with faculty, hang out with grad students, and meet face-to-face with interviewing faculty, so get a bigger chance to make an impression on them) I don't think this greatly affect the admission decision. All applicants should be treated equally and given the same chance. Q3- However if the above is true then "every time" a domestic applicant has an 'advantage' over an international phone applicant- and so the faculty MUST KNOW this by now factor the fact in that phone interviews candidates have a lesser chance of making an impression. Do you think the faculty factor these things in when comparing domestic vs international candidates? I don't think.. By the way, interview is one thing used to evaluate your profile. Your chance for admission depends also on your credentials compared to other applicants. Q4- If the student himself wants to travel for an interview at his own expense what US VISA class is most appropriate to come to US for a few days for an interview? In my humble opinion, I see only the "Visitor Visa", i.e. B-1 or B-2 which 'may' be applicable, but those two categories also do not include "interview". Those two just mention "Business" or "Pleasure", so are you sure if that is the most appropriate Visa class to come to US for an interview? If you are traveling for an interview, so the only visa you can have is B1/B2 visa. Q5- If indeed B-1 or B-2 are the Visa that would allow me to come to US for a school interview - can I be reimbursed some of the money (like the apprx $300-$500 that they reimburse domestic applicants?). I asked as many US visas do not allow $$ to be accepted. But can such a small reimbursement amount be accepted by an international applicant when visiting the US school on a B-1 visa? I don't think so, but you may check with the school. Programs may cover the expenses related to traveling of domestic applicants if an interview is mandatory but they do not cover overseas traveling. That's why I told you about the program that discouraged applications from graduates who are not in the US. Q6- My above Q4 can be answered by answering this question - when international scientist come to US for big conferences for a few days what Visa do they come on? I believe that will be same visa that wd be appropriate for applicants coming for interviews? Again B1/B2 Q7- Similarly, if scientist who come to US for conferences get reimbursed by any US university, then it means that it is legal to get reimbursed travel expenses from US when you are on a B-1 visa. This is not related to the type of visa. It depends on the university. Inviting a scientist to a conference is different from your case. And again, you have to check with the program if they can reimburse you for your traveling expenses. However, I don't think you find a program doing so. It's a great deal of money to pay for the overseas traveling of applicants just for an interview!! Q-8, One more question to add, is health insurance a big factor when coming down to US for an interview (they did not mention in the letter that the school will pay for my health insurance for my interview visit) You are asking about health insurance??!! You are coming for a short visit for an interview. You are not eligible at all to have health insurance unless you are offered admission. Remember, an interview is not a guarantee for admission. I hope I covered what you need to know.. Thank you for answering my questions
  6. I hope so! Actually one of the schools I am applying to requires a minimum of 1100. My score translates to approximately 1080- 1090 on the old scale :( It's a competitive program, yet I was advised to apply... and yes I am applying to PhD not a Pharm D. I don't know what my chances are especially that I don't have any publications or research experience. I have a bachelor's degree (5-year undergraduate) in addition to a Pharm D degree (2-year graduate program). I also have the FPGEC certification after passing exams that qualified me to be eligible for licensure in the US. I have STRONG motivation to pursue a graduate degree... what do you think about my chances???
  7. People in this forum don't reply!! Anyway, I am not majoring in engineering but I may try to answer your questions according to my little experience. 1. Will i be able to apply for grad schools in USA or Canada? First of all, are you sure you accurately calculated your CGPA? I think 77% is above 3.0 Most of grad schools require a minimum CGPA of 3.0, but I think you may still find schools who can accept below that..I remember I came across one in my major that required only 2.7 , so that is possible..You have to check with the school 2. Is there any chance i can get any form of financial aid? Finding financial aid at the master's level is really HARD..if you find any, you need to have strong credentials to be competitive..I am talking about MY experience..I am majoring in pharmacy...Having lots of extracurricular activities or a research experience may be an asset. 3. Can GRE score compensate for my low cgpa? if so how much should be my aim? I am not sure of that, but definitely you need a high GRE, maybe above 1300 and a score above 1400 can be awesome
  8. Hi Straightadmit, I am having this same problem. I took GRE twice and my scores in both were pretty close with the second slightly higher. GRE V: 145 Q: 155 W: 3.5 My TOEFL iBT is 108...which is somewhat a good score...Can this score make up for my low GRE V ?? My undergrad and Grad GPA are around 3.2 I don't have a research experience I am applying to PhD program in Pharmacy and I am seeking financial assistance mainly through TA/RA Do you think I have a good chance?? Thanks!
  9. Congratulations for these scores!...Yes, they are official....This is what you will exactly see on your account in a couple of weeks.

    Score report

Hi, I took GRE twice, almost two months apart. Only on my second exam, I requested my score to be reported to four institutions. Surprisingly, I found that score report were sent just 8 days after I took my second exam. At that time, my scores for the second exam were not out yet. A week later, my scores were available. Does this mean that only scores of the first exam were sent?? because if my scores on the second exam were sent, why they were not available on my account?? I called ETS, but I don't feel comfortable with their reply!
  11. Hi, Where can I find explanations for question in the powerprep practice test especially the quantitative sections? Thanks!
  12. results are already out..you have a problem with loging in to your account..make sure you correctly enter the number..if still facing a problem, contact ETS.
  13. You will only have ONE topic on each: the issue and the argument essay and you will have 30 min for each task.
  14. Hi, I am having the exam in few hours and I am stuch with these problems! The first two are from the powerprep and the rest are advanced math questions for the GRE. I appreciate any help! If the value of S increases by 50%, then the value of T decreases by what percent? The correct answer in powerprep is 33 1/3 % !! Why it is not 50 %?!!
