  1. My vote goes to C. The author talks about bumper stickers in CAPS for people to notice the threat they present to the animal. C specifically talks about that premise. OA?
  2. Hi, I am looking for a GMAT-Verbal tutor in the southern New England area (New Haven/Hartford, Connecticut or Springfield, Mass). I studied three prep books (OG 10th edition, Princeton, and Kaplan) on my own but can’t improve my verbal score. I may not need a lot of directions and strategies; I am looking for someone that can dive in the verbal questions right away. I think I want to focus on the OG 11th edition. I have a copy of the book already. I have not looked at the materials inside it yet. I want to go through it with the tutor in a way that would maximize the use of the book. I made a mistake in the past when I was studying the OG 10th edition. I sort of memorized the answers and forget about the analytical skills required to answer the questions.
  3. Hi, I think you know what you want to say but you lack few basic concepts about essay writing. 1- Stay with the structure of 5-paragraph essay. 2- Each paragraph should have a main point to deliver. 3- State your position rite at the top. 4- I like that you use examples from personal experience. GMAT people like that. 5- Stay away from using “It” and “Being”. Apply what you learned in sentence correction. 6- You need two spaces after a full stop “end of sentence period", and one space after a comma. 7- This is how I would write such an essay. Mine is not the best but it is a good template. I scored 5 on AWA using this template. 8- Good luck. The argument presented is not convincing. The author concludes that the Mercury newspaper lost 10,000 readers because a competitor newspaper, the Bugle, has started circulating 5 years ago. There are several questionable assumptions resulting in a logical gap between the premise and the conclusion. A major assumption in this argument is that the quality of the material in both newspapers is the same. This assumption may as well be wrong because it is impossible for any two newspapers to have writers and editors that are exactly the same. Readers relate to certain writers based on personal preferences and relation. Each newspaper has various writers and each writer has his/her own readers. The validity of the conclusion also depends on proving that the 10,000 readers that the Mercury newspaper lost are now buying the Bugle newspaper, a key concept omitted. For if these readers, for example, started reading magazines instead of newspapers, it is not fare to blame that shift on the starting of the Bugle newspaper. I, for one, stopped reading newspapers 5 years ago and started reading articles online or downloading reading materials from the Internet. Finally, even if the two assumptions discussed above were true, the argument would be unconvincing because, without providing any evidence, it requires guarantee that readers will start buying the Mercury newspaper once the price is reduced. Many readers don’t abandon a favorite writer because another one became available for less. Also, many readers are in favorite of best entertainment or knowledge no matter how much it costs. In order to make the conclusion more persuasive, the author would have to demonstrate that the assumptions discussed above are in fact true. Thus evidence supporting similar material in both newspapers, the 10,000 readers that the Mercury lost are now buying the Bugle, and readers are willing to return to the Mercury if the price is reduced would tighten the link between the premises and the conclusion, making the reasoning more sound. Without any discussions of these ideas, however, it is impossible to evaluate the conclusion.
  4. The issue at hand is extremely complex. While some people agree that the primary duty of a corporation is to make money, others argue that the corporations’ main concern should be serving the society. Both perspectives are important but the advantages of making money out weigh the drawbacks. Making money is important for corporations because money affords the corporation to pay the wages and the bills. The corporation has to make money to be able to keep its employees. If employees don’t get paid what they are worth, they may leave the corporation to work for competitors, an action that may jeopardize the existence of the corporation as a whole. Secondly, making money will allow the corporation to serve the society even better, the main point of the opposition. Employing as many people as possible and providing services to members of the society are the best contributions that a corporation can introduce to the society. In addition, profitable corporations usually are able to support research schools in advancing the developments of new technologies. Without hefty donations from large corporations many universities would not be able to offer graduate studies to pursue innovations and inventions. Some people might object the idea of corporations’ focus on making money because the focus on money tends to force corporations to take decisions that are influenced by economics, this objection can be countered by the fact that most organizations are self-funded and making money is the reason that keeps them producing. While the issue of weather organizations should focus on making money or serving the society must be considered carefully, the reasons of affording the expenses, employing many people, and funding research schools provide convincing support that corporations’ concern about making money is appropriate.
  5. RC is not my strongest section of the GMAT but this is my 1 cent. C, D, C.
  6. I thought the idiom is “such…as”. Such… that does not sound right. Twin, What are still doing around?J I thought you got your score in the bag. Your input is much appreciated though.
  7. I think the answer is A. The answer should support cost, speed, and reliability. The volume seems to address all three.
  8. Thanks a lto scoot. That was a lot of help.
  9. I think the answer is A. B is using “While”. While is used with timing issues to say that two things are happening at the same time.
  10. Hi guys, I am a non-native English speaker, but have been living in the U. S. for 14 years. I took the GMAT few times and my handicap is verbal. Forget about reading combination. I am a slow reader and that is not going to improve in the near future. I worked very hard on sentence correction and my hit rate is higher now. But I can’t seem to improve my CR ability. I read all the material that I can, studied the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] twice, and have been working on the test magic posts for about three months. With few days left on my G-day, I am furious to fail to improve my score again. Please help me and others with some advise to make better use of the next few days. Thanks
  11. Does this have any weigh? To me it means that the answer should be 2c1 * 8p5. Please correct me if I am wrong.
  12. 300 Each 100 offer 20, 10 * 20 = 200 (10 for each 10 and 10 for the 70’s) The 700’s offer 100 Total = 300
  13. Hi he hels, How did you come up with 42 and 24? a shot in the dark?:)
  14. The plan is to take on loans to buy a publishing company, a chocolate factory, and a movie chain to get steady revenue. All the options weaken the plan except D. I think it is D.
  15. Yeah, No matter what m is, “X^2” will keep y from =ing 0 until we know what x is.
  16. Please explain to non-english speakers, what is "accessed values"?
  17. I would go with E too. Take 1/2 and 1/4 as x. You can't decide which is exactly x using A, B or Both.
  18. I think B is the best answer. But I think it is missing “that” before “is” so to read: ….A group of new world tropical birds THAT includes more than 230 species and THAT is represented…..
  19. I think it is C. (Allow … be) is the right structure. Also, “Since” at the beginning of the sentence makes “have begun” appropriate.
