Yo I have an email alert for this thread :) I ended up not applying to Munich. It looked sketchy. German is never a problem. English is perfectly fine.

germany is cool. You dont get any funding for the masters degree but you have the chance to do a research degree and if you are succesful in your second year you become a phd student and get funding. I believe this scheme applies to both bonn and mannheim... England is also a good choice but you will have the option to take phd level courses in bonn or mannheim if you can get in. In nottingham for instance, you just do master's level econ courses which are not easy but also are not as demanding as first year phd classes. nottingham is not the best stepping stone. you do need to already have a good undergraduate degree if you wanna try higher rank schools. but if you are 100% sure of what you want to specialize in then going to england may be a good option. If you are good enough and have a good project then you can get the ESRC scholarship. But if you are not sure on what you wanna do and want to dig deeper into micro macro and metrics before deciding then englans is not the place to go.

Well the thing is I do not have the PhD experience yet, and perhaps studying with a dissertation advisor that you know and like is much more important.

Dear all I will ask for your advice for one last time before I start my PhD. I am stuck between two offers and I am not sure which one is ultimately better. Option 1 Mannheim PhD - Fontana Fellowship (tuition + 1200Euro per month) Option 2 Nottingham PhD - ESRC Scholarship (tuition + 1150Pound per month) I had my master in Nottingham and had a great experience with my dissertation advisor. I did my dissertation on culture/trust/simulations/evolutionary game theory/complex networks. I really like my master diss. advisor and I will be working with him for my PhD if I go to Nottingham. ESRC is from what I have heard a pretty respected scholarship; thus, I am guessing that it will help be get a job after my nott phd graduation. Nottingham's phd graduates are doing ok but not great. For those who have not heard of Nottingham. It is a 3 year program with some modules on the first year but nothing too comprehensive (I think). It is one of the top places to study behavioral, experimental and evolutionary gt, and all these topics will have some parts in my phd dissertation. Mannheim is also, in my opinion, a great school. 5 years long US style education (with the 1 year of various adv. modules). They have the opportunity to send you as an exchange student to either US (berkley or yale) or Europe (Toulouse, Stockholm, Barcelona etc.). While Nott. is excelled on behavioral and experimental, Mannheim is more of an overall good school. I do not know who will be my advisor nor what will be my phd diss. topic (I will have 2 years to decide on it -i think). Nottingham is a place I already know which actually makes it a bit boring compared to living in germany for 4 years and figuring out the language. It looks like Mannheim as a better placement record. I am not sure why this is the case -perhaps being in europe rather than in UK. I am an international student, so I feel like Europe is more welcoming compared to UK thus I'll have a higher chance at finding a job graduating from mannheim. I will really appreciate if you can help me out with my decision! Thank you all

Okay I have done a bit of digging regarding the faculty of these three programs. Munich has a strong staff in behavioral/experimental and in Macro (especially in DSGE) but they are poor in econometrics Berlin is really strong in econometric and good in micro, okay in finance and poor on the rest Goethe Frankfurt is okay in macro and poor on the rest Based on the faculty munich seems to be the better option then berlin and only then goethe... please correct me if I am wrong

I think you dont need more math classes but you lack advanced econometric modules, you say you want to work on exchange rate forecasting so good knowledge of time series analysis is necessary for instance... Also if you want to do financial accelerators, I only think of DSGEs, so you may want to take a numerical methods module. Also you have not mention any game theory related modules. I feel like a solid game theory knowdledge will help you with both micro and macro.

Regarding Konstanz I have checked who is teaching the modules, and realized that lecturers are not in any way strong. They only have several research papers published.

Yes I just checked it, he is also teaching times series module there, and indeed they offer a variety of high level econometrics courses. Do you think as an non eu citizen after graduating from one of these three programs can find a research position in Germany ?

Well I am looking for very academic programs. I am aware of the superiority of Bonn and Mannheim, and I will apply to their program but I believe they are highly competitive so I would like to consider potentially interesting programs. Do you think MGSE and BDPEMS are more for people who wants to go work in private sector or for government? I have no clue about Berlin no :) I only know it is a great place to live.

As I have two diplomas I was thinking about only presenting one in my applications. I am still not sure though whether it will do me more harm than good...
