  1. Yo I have an email alert for this thread :) I ended up not applying to Munich. It looked sketchy. German is never a problem. English is perfectly fine.
  2. germany is cool. You dont get any funding for the masters degree but you have the chance to do a research degree and if you are succesful in your second year you become a phd student and get funding. I believe this scheme applies to both bonn and mannheim... England is also a good choice but you will have the option to take phd level courses in bonn or mannheim if you can get in. In nottingham for instance, you just do master's level econ courses which are not easy but also are not as demanding as first year phd classes. nottingham is not the best stepping stone. you do need to already have a good undergraduate degree if you wanna try higher rank schools. but if you are 100% sure of what you want to specialize in then going to england may be a good option. If you are good enough and have a good project then you can get the ESRC scholarship. But if you are not sure on what you wanna do and want to dig deeper into micro macro and metrics before deciding then englans is not the place to go.
  3. Well the thing is I do not have the PhD experience yet, and perhaps studying with a dissertation advisor that you know and like is much more important.
  4. Dear all I will ask for your advice for one last time before I start my PhD. I am stuck between two offers and I am not sure which one is ultimately better. Option 1 Mannheim PhD - Fontana Fellowship (tuition + 1200Euro per month) Option 2 Nottingham PhD - ESRC Scholarship (tuition + 1150Pound per month) I had my master in Nottingham and had a great experience with my dissertation advisor. I did my dissertation on culture/trust/simulations/evolutionary game theory/complex networks. I really like my master diss. advisor and I will be working with him for my PhD if I go to Nottingham. ESRC is from what I have heard a pretty respected scholarship; thus, I am guessing that it will help be get a job after my nott phd graduation. Nottingham's phd graduates are doing ok but not great. For those who have not heard of Nottingham. It is a 3 year program with some modules on the first year but nothing too comprehensive (I think). It is one of the top places to study behavioral, experimental and evolutionary gt, and all these topics will have some parts in my phd dissertation. Mannheim is also, in my opinion, a great school. 5 years long US style education (with the 1 year of various adv. modules). They have the opportunity to send you as an exchange student to either US (berkley or yale) or Europe (Toulouse, Stockholm, Barcelona etc.). While Nott. is excelled on behavioral and experimental, Mannheim is more of an overall good school. I do not know who will be my advisor nor what will be my phd diss. topic (I will have 2 years to decide on it -i think). Nottingham is a place I already know which actually makes it a bit boring compared to living in germany for 4 years and figuring out the language. It looks like Mannheim as a better placement record. I am not sure why this is the case -perhaps being in europe rather than in UK. I am an international student, so I feel like Europe is more welcoming compared to UK thus I'll have a higher chance at finding a job graduating from mannheim. I will really appreciate if you can help me out with my decision! Thank you all
  5. Some information regarding the program would be highly appreciated. Anybody ?
  6. I have received an offer on the 18th
  7. Institution: Tinbergen Institute Program: PhD in Economics Decision: Rejected Funding: Notification Date: 2 month ago Notified Through: email Posted on GC: not yet Comments: was the dream school was contemplating on how to pay the bill in case I get accepted... Well rejected and was pissed... Institution: SSE Program: PhD in Economics Decision: Rejected Funding: Notification Date: past month or so Notified Through: email Posted on GC: not yet Comments: after tilburg rejection was depressed a bit and anticipating rejections so not as sad Institution: Stockholm University Program: PhD in Economics Decision: Rejected Funding: Notification Date: past month or so Notified Through: email Posted on GC: not yet Comments: after tilburg rejection was depressed a bit and anticipating rejections so not as sad Institution: University of Nottingham Program: PhD in Economics Decision: Accepted Funding: Pending (Highly likely to get 13K pound tuition waiver but no funding to cover living expenses) Notification Date: past month or so Notified Through: email Posted on GC: not yet Comments: My Msc school so was pretty sure to get accepted. I accepted the offer in case I dont get any other offers and I needed to accept their offer to be eligible for funding. Will probably get the funding but no living expenses: UK is expensive yo ! My thesis advisor is a great guy and I really wanted to work with him. My only concern was I had to commit to solely focus on evolutionary game theory and I am not sure yet what to specialize in... Institution: Tilburg U. Program: PhD in Economics Decision: Wailisted -> Accepted Funding: NO funding... Notification Date: past week Notified Through: email Posted on GC: not yet Comments: No funding, dont have that much money yo! Thus declined the offer... Institution: Berlin Doctoral Program in Economics and Management (BDPEM) Program: PhD in Economics Decision: Rejected Funding: Notification Date: past week Notified Through: email Posted on GC: not yet Comments: safety school at the time I had only rejects so it was quite depressing to get rejected. I thought I wont be able to get into any program. Sooo saaaad.... Institution: Goethe University am Frankfurt Main (GSEFM) Program: PhD in Economics Decision: Accepted Funding: Highly possible TA/RA position for the second year Notification Date: 2 days ago Notified Through: email Posted on GC: not yet Comments: Relieved... Was worried what would have happened if I dont get funding from Nottingham... Great program, great job placement ! I was considering to accept the offer but then... Institution: University of Mannheim Program: PhD in Economics Decision: Accepted Funding: 1200 Euro/month for the first year (if I understood it correctly) Notification Date: Today Notified Through: email Posted on GC: not yet Comments: WTF ! I was not expecting to get an offer. Especially after Berlin rejection. I applied here because I saw someone one the forum who got rejected from many places and then got into Mannheim. So I said why the hell not. 2 years ago I applied for their masters and didnt make it, went to Nottingham Msc instead. So now trying to get in to their PhD was just a slim shot but hell I made it... And they give me funding... Happy
  8. Okay I have done a bit of digging regarding the faculty of these three programs. Munich has a strong staff in behavioral/experimental and in Macro (especially in DSGE) but they are poor in econometrics Berlin is really strong in econometric and good in micro, okay in finance and poor on the rest Goethe Frankfurt is okay in macro and poor on the rest Based on the faculty munich seems to be the better option then berlin and only then goethe... please correct me if I am wrong
  9. I think you dont need more math classes but you lack advanced econometric modules, you say you want to work on exchange rate forecasting so good knowledge of time series analysis is necessary for instance... Also if you want to do financial accelerators, I only think of DSGEs, so you may want to take a numerical methods module. Also you have not mention any game theory related modules. I feel like a solid game theory knowdledge will help you with both micro and macro.
  10. Regarding Konstanz I have checked who is teaching the modules, and realized that lecturers are not in any way strong. They only have several research papers published.
  11. Yes I just checked it, he is also teaching times series module there, and indeed they offer a variety of high level econometrics courses. Do you think as an non eu citizen after graduating from one of these three programs can find a research position in Germany ?
  12. Well I am looking for very academic programs. I am aware of the superiority of Bonn and Mannheim, and I will apply to their program but I believe they are highly competitive so I would like to consider potentially interesting programs. Do you think MGSE and BDPEMS are more for people who wants to go work in private sector or for government? I have no clue about Berlin no :) I only know it is a great place to live.
  13. For those who are not familiar with the abbreviations MGSE: Munich Graduate School of Economics - About the Munich Graduate School of Economics (MGSE) - Munich Graduate School of Economics - LMU Munich BDPEMS : Berlin Doctoral Program in Economics and Management Science - https://bdpems.wiwi.hu-berlin.de/portal/ GSEFM: Graduate School of Economics, Finance and Management (Goethe Frankfurt based) - http://gsefm.eu/gsefm-an-introduction/key-features-of-gsefm.html I am considering applying them. I would like to get some opinions on people with some insightful information regarding the programs. I have interest in metrics (mainly time series), game theory (mainly evolutionary) and macro (mainly DSGE). thank you !
  14. As I have two diplomas I was thinking about only presenting one in my applications. I am still not sure though whether it will do me more harm than good...
  15. Cheers man. Yea this is the second time I am hearing that I should get advice from my prof. I will email him today or tomorrow regarding it.
  16. No they wont as long as I dont send my transcript and I don't need to send my transcropt as I have another undergraduat diploma. Still I am not sure if it is worth or if it will do more harm than good.
  17. I am rather shy on asking my supervisor on applying to other schools and implying that I dont wanna work with him. In addition, to be honest I really like my supervisor (on ABM and evolutionary game theory) or if not him another potential supervisor (on applied econometrics); yet in uk you have to pick your topic and specialize in it and I am still not sure what field to focus on; I would like to have the freedom to decide perhaps after another year of intense advanced level training.
  18. Dont get me wrong it does give me some force and honestly they gave me a solid econometrics education but outside europe I dont think they are as recognized as one may hope. Besides my undergrad gpa is a major drawback, I am even considering not even mentioning my us undergrad education as it has the lowest gpa.

Funding... Other: Having multiple diplomas is rather confusing to adcoms, it helps in my case as I had terrible grades from my BA. They are all full-time studies, it is just that turkish universities are relatively easy. Applying to: (PhD) Canada - Simon Fraser, Mcmaster, Carleton, Western Ontario, UBC (?); US - Michigan U. (?), George Mason, Iowa State, Ohio State, UT Dallas, UT Austin, UCSB, UCSD; Europe - Bonn, Konstanz, Tinbergen, SSE, Nottingham, Cambridge (just because of one of my letter of recommendation writter has contacts there). Honestly, this is a preliminary list I have no clue where I can get in... To be honest, all I want is to get into TI with funding... I would like to get some help on wher to apply as I still have no clue what to do any 2 cents will be appreciated... I basically copy pasted my profile from the roll card 2014 thread. I don't know if anyone will be interested in giving some advices but I just dont wanna end up not getting admitted to anywhere. I basically took the Msc in economics from Nottingham Uni to increase my chances. Now I have a distinction from the modules and my dissertation and now I realize like it is worth nothing... I am good at time series econometrics and low key like it but I find micro more interesting. I am looking for a place where I can pursue either time series or micro with a focus on evolutionary dynamics. The only place I can come up with is Tinbergen. I dream of being a part of their CSC (Cooperative Bhaviour, Strategic Interaction and Complex Systems) research group. My other major problem is I am out of money and I am a non-EU guy. So I cannot afford to pay for tinbergen and I wonder if I have any chance on 1st being admitted and 2nd getting funding...

  21. I have studied simultaneously in two schools. I have a low 2.7/4 GPA from Middlebury College Economics and a low 3.16/4 GPA from Istanbul University Economics both undergrad. My econ gpa for middlebury for econ is 3.0/4 I have taken a lot of cs classes that end up lowering my overall score. Now I am doing a master degree in Istanbul University Econometrics I will probably get something close to 4. Toefl score 115 Haven't taken GRE but pretty sure I will ace the quantitative part. I would love to go straight to a Phd program but I am not sure if I can. I want to get in to SSE but I know they are pretty competitive. Do you guys think doing a master in a good school will increase my chances ? I have recently granted with a scholarship from my gov. . So I don't have to worry about money. I would love to study in TI but I don't think they will consider me. So I am also wondering about a potentially good masters program that will help me to get into a not bad econ phd program. Also, I was the intro to micro and microeconomics tutor for middlebury college for 3 years and worked as a T.A. for two econ prof (intro to micro and micro theory) for 3 years. I just really don't know where to apply or what to do. Any comment, suggestion will be appreciated.
